what happened to VPforum?

And usually stuff like that doesn't cause those Miss America shenanigans.

I actually still wonder if that was the end of VPF. I wonder if it's kicked the bucket for good, or if AJ just didn't notice yet.

The McD

If it was a bad hack I wonder if it was the last straw for AJ, the last forum software update took him weeks (months?), if he has to redo any of that he may have thrown in the towel.

But I think he would have put up a page somewhere telling everyone that he was done with vpforums, so it's still too early to think it's gone for good.

Later,
Marty

I noticed that sometimes my username is not displayed at the top left corner of the home page ("hello unlogged user") but yet i am logged in.It is also a bit slow here from time to time but overall it is fine.

I have the same problem with this site

It is something i noticed recently however it is not a big deal, thank you for the reply.

Aj

why doesnt AJ come to this forum and fill us in on what is happening instead of leaving us to guess what is happening???

This site is also hosted at The Planet and last year there had been an explosion at the data center "The Planet",it happened early june 2008 and afterwards the site was down for a day, perhaps the same thing happened to VPForums, some of you might remember of that.

Yeah, but in our case it's been down for "days".

You must have misunderstood what i said,it was just an anecdote and nothing else,i have never said that the same thing is happening to VPForums, however there is no problem as sometimes one can be wrong.

Because as far as we know, AJ doesn't go to any other pinball related site but VPF.

To me, based on the current error message, the hosting service itself went down. A WHOIS confirms that AJ still has vpforums.com registered through 2010.

He doesn't even visit his own forum, never mind going to another one to fill people in.

Possible reasons are 1) he doesn't know something's wrong, 2) he's busy fixing it and perhaps will tell us there what happened when he's done, or 3) he could give a damn less about any of it and has pulled the plug. I suspect it's a combination of 1 and 2 - he didn't realize it right away, but now he's working on a recovery plan.

Maybe the weekend will bring more info, people tend to have more time for hobby-type stuff on weekends.

you know what saddens me ?

the fact that "what happened to VPforum?" is the most active thread on this site.

this site should stand alone as a beacon to many things .... what happened to vpf should be just a small portion of it.

jon is more than gracious, although at times ridiculously liberal,
and he hosts both shiva and pacdude in all their unfettered glory,
as well as jpsalas, groni, scapino, and anyone else that asks.

here, at PN, that should be the focus .... what happened to VPF should be a side story.

Everybody knows that Williams/Bally make slot machines, but did you guys know that Sega started making slot machines too. I went to Tampa FL. to check on getting a kidney transplant, and of course all went well but i have a lot more things to do before that happens. So after that we decieded to go to the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa FL. and when i went inside i saw slot machines by Sega, yes the Sega, the slot machines i saw were The house of the dead, Shinobi and three other ones but i forgot their names, they weren't based on video games though only the first to. It's kinda funny watching the old ladies playing them and not knowing that they are based on Video Games. They didn't pay out very much, i guess because their still new so they have to make the money that they paid for them. What is going on here all these video game company's are going for slot machines. Now let's see Atari, Capcom, Data East, and Konami start making slot machines next you never know, I guess theirs money too be made in slot machines i know Las Vegas does very well with slot machines. Well i just had to tell all you guys that, also maybe Gary Stern should do it too, so he can pay for his pinball machines. Dave P.

I am rather shocked that none of the VP admins have anyway of contacting AJ other than through the forum:confused2::confused2:. It would seem that if they were running the site that they would have an e-mail address, phone number or something. :confused2:

That is a source of concern, that AJ never communicates through any site other than the one that is missing.

agree. jon, with steve and slapnuts helping out, have done a great job supporting a high-quality VP experience here. i can't even imagine where we would be without him and them.

when i was a VPF admin i counted myself very fortunate to ever reach AJ. i think it happened three times in one and a half years, averaging once every six months. and that's when he cared more about the site. it's a world of frustration that made my job and pete's (TMFP) much harder than it should have been.

not one of those times was via phone, btw... he never returned any of my messages. at times i was left wondering if someone in california could personally hand-deliver a message to his street address in carmichael.

I'm almost kind of sorry I started this thread! I agree we have beaten this subject to death. the poor admin here is ever so patient to let us ramble on about the past when we should be looking to the future! Long live Pinball Nirvana!! and kudos to the sysop(s) here! let's move on now and talk just of the good people who are here (past present AND future!). so it's gone, yeah we're saddened at its sudden demise, but lets all of us just get over it and move on m-m-m-mk?

oh on a quick aside to the slot post, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,USA now has slot machine parlors (they've legalized slots but not table gambling. (craps, poker, blackjack) for city use. Some of these are indeed made by Stern I HATE slots (if I want that kind of excersize, I can just rip the pull cord of my lawnmower a few dozen times!) but I've seen them there. Nothing like an entire building packed full of nothing but slot machines, the din gave me such a headache I had to leave! And they (the nice BIG security boys) wouldn't let me take any pics of any slots! Security reasons they said to deter cheaters! oh well.

Yup, I can see the Harrah's casino in Chester from the observatory at work. So far the casinos in Philly have been delayed by people living around the proposed sites, but I think all the other locations around the state have gone forward.

Last time I saw a mechanical slot machine was probably 10 years ago in Atlantic City, they are all just big computer games now. So I doubt Stern would have any advantage over the other companies out there, back when they were mechanical the companies that made pinball machines could use some of their talent and tools to make slots.

How easy it is to forget how messy it gets here when some of the guests get a bit rambunctious and start ransacking the place unchecked. All is good when that's not happening, and I hope it stays that way. I'm skeptical.

Thank you very much for that Nic, its much appreciated:) I am happy to pass all the credit to Jon and Steve, as I have not been around as much the last few years due to some relationship issues but now that I am over that crap, I am happy to see things are well here and I hope that this site can continue to suit almost everyone with VPforums being out of the picture (at least as it looks like now). As Jon has done a hell of a job with all the upgrades and the constant love for pinball he has graciously shared with all of us over the years and hopefully continues to do so, kudos to him for keeping this site alive and well:)

Thanks for that insite.

I thought you or someone had his cell phone number.... My mistake.

When AJ was updating the forum a few months back, I posted in a thread in the staffroom and he replied, "Bob, you are a moderator now!" which proved he hadn't even looked at the staff forums for about 3 years. Duh.... But I always thought that was a good thing as long as he kept the forum up.

As for the VPForums name and the earlier discussion of stealing it. I think it may be the best choice of names as it is a VP forum and I don't think they stole anything, but maybe shiva could tell us how AJ got the forum to begin with. :)

Indeed.....nuff said.;)

Well my X-box 360 just died on me. I just got the Three Ring Of Death, Just now when i turned it on so i'll just go and buy the $199.99 version and then hook up my hard drive to it. I have two hard drives but i have to wait until i get paid. I bought my system the first day it came out, so i knew eventually it was going to happen. At least it waited awhile before it happened and didn't happen right away when i bought it. I won't be able to get a free one or get it fixed from microsoft i called them and they said i had it too long, oh well. I was hoping to upgrade my computer so i can play the Mame CHD games like California speed, Carnevil, Crusi'n series and the two Gauntlet games legend and Dark Lagecy. X-box comes first i do have mame v.0129 some guy on an emulation site says the first three games i mentioned should work without any studdering and slowdown but i tried everything and it still doesn't work. The only CHD games i can play are Area 51/Maximum force, Crypt Killer and Killer Instinct 1 and 2 thats it. Eventually the computer will get updated right now i need my X-box 360 i have games i want to finish and i want Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil 5. Talk to you later Dave P.

i used to have his street address and telephone number before a hard drive crash. i prolly still have the number written down somewhere.

As for that 'vpforums.something' business, personally i think this is pretty low. While i do respect and appreciate the initiative behind it, the way how it is done is pretty dissappointing. Imperfect owner or not, you must not forget that the name 'VPForums' is what it is today solely thanks to AJ and his continued efforts in keeping the forum up for all these years. And for that he deserves our utmost respect. The place as a whole has a certain reputation within the emulation scene which it has rightfully earned during all that time, and when other places write about or point to 'VPForums', they mean AJs place, not some other place who merely ripped the name and put a different domain behind it in the hopes to inherit the original places' merits. So creating a new forum, all well and good and by all means good luck, but if one does so they should at least have the decency and do it with their own name and earn their own merits. If they prove worthy they will be respected for what they made of their place themselves, and nobody can say they had to stand on the shoulders of others to achieve it.

I wonder what's shiva's take on the above sentiment?...
