Titanic Hospital
I just found out from a thread at vpforums.org. He's been very ill for two months.
I was thinking of Stan the other day and I just found this thread.

This is an online patient e-mail form (see bottom of page) for the Trillium Hospital where
Stan (Bluto) is staying. You can send your get well wishes here and the hospital will print it and give it to Stan.

This is how I filled it out:

Patient
First Name: Stan
Last Name: Wade
Room #: 344
Your Name: use your own name!
Your Message: use your own words!
Your E-mail Address: use your own addy!

thanks, arne. message sent.

Yea, I'd thank elton too for his message, but he hasn't posted!
I hope Stan gets a ton of messages. It can only help.

Amen to that. It's nice when you hear from your friends with encouraging words at times like these.

it's funny about bluto- when he first came on the scene we had no idea about him. he seemed to be a spammy type of kid who didn't read directions well.

eventually we realised he was an older guy who didn't know much about computers or the internet, which made a lot of what he said understandable. over time i personally began to appreciate a zen-like quality in his posts- innocent, amusing, and sometimes profound without any intention to be. not unlike mitchell's posts, if you remember that guy.

anyway, it's been fun hearing stan talk about old times in canada and posting pictures of his 40's cars and stuff. one of the things i didn't value much when i was younger was being able to talk to older folks, asking them questions about past times and and hearing them give their unique take on what it was like to live back then. the older i get the more that seems like a precious resource.

on a side note, something i enjoyed recently was the library of congress photostream. this is one set, containing some of the archetypical pictures from life magazine, etc:

I just searched through my pinball pictures collection and found a pic of bluto from younger years, which he posted/mailed me some time ago. It never went into the gallery, because I asked him for a more actual pic. I'm sure he would like you to see him raising a glass of beer to you all, so I attach it here.

Yeah .... he'd appreciate that Yogi dispite him not being allowed it anymore.

Hope everyone sends him a message. Last time I spoke to Stan he had not received my letter and card that were posted from the UK some 2 weeks previously. I'll be really pissed off if they do not arrive.

I still didn't post using sleepys link. I will do next. Thanks for your care. What's the way you speek to him? Is it by telephone or are you on location?

I'm hoisting a cold one for him right now. Get well soon, my friend. We miss you.

Having had my PM's and email messages rejected by Stan's ISP, I started searching for Stan through various means. After trying the hospitals in his area and finding him there, I asked the records section about his well being and got transferred to the nurses station. Once I'd explained who I was they in turn transferred me directly to his room to cheer him up.

Since then, I posted the results (at the other place and thought I'd done so here too - but clearly hadn't) I have sent a card, letter and some photo's to Stan. Regrettably, he had not received them when I telephoned him again to check on his progress.

Thankfully, my telephone provider does not charge me for calls to the USA and Canada as long as they are not excessively long - so I've enjoyed our couple of 20-30 minute calls and will continue to do so while he's stuck there.

elton, you are a god.

elton, you are a god.

God is a little too strong .... but I accept your sentiments gracefully.

Nic, I'd do the same for any of my cyber 'buddies' if the circumstances repeated .... and which I hope they never will.

But the whole experience has been very rewarding and strangely thought provoking in the 'who would miss me if 'I' disappeared suddenly' stakes.

Would anyone try and find the missing 'me'.
What info might they need to search 'me' out with such remote data such as 'elton' 'Carmarthenshire' 'Wales' and likes USA holidays. Shit, I don't think I could find 'me' LOL

Mmmm ... it does get you thinking though how others perceive you ....

I've been wondering about Kinsey. I hope she didn't do what she was talking about.

The link to VPForums here http://www.paganpinball.com/ is changed to VPF.org, so I guess she's still interested in pinball. She requested to remove her pic from the gallery and I did, but somehow she wasn't satisfied anyway and accused me of things, I wasn't aware of and responsible for. So I don't think it's a good idea for me to try to contact her. But anyone else can do.

Hey elton, if you call Stan again, find out if he is receiving the e-mails.

Yeah Sleepy, I'll do that. I also hope he's had my stuff which I must admit to being cheesed off about.

Hope to ring him this weekend. Have a busy week this week. Nephew is staying, daughter gets her results before (hopefully) University, I have 2 days work and very busy around the house. You'd think I could manage a phone call but i'd rather arrange when the house is relatively quiet - so it will probably be this weekend. Of course I will report back immediately.

Bluto Update

Have just spoken to Stan - it's taken a while because he's moved rooms and the telephone operator was transferring me to a dumb phone!

Anyway, Stan is in room 315 now. He has received my card and letter (finally) but did not receive Paul's. Neither has he had any messages via the on-line patient email. That is a real shitter IMO. They would have cheered him up no end.

He is clearly still in hospital and restricted to bed. He has been bed-bound for so long that he'd have difficulty in walking and will probably need physio to get him started. However, he seems unmotivated to try. He recognises he has to do it but remains reconciled to being in bed. His children have tried to motivate him but to no avail. He sounded very tired on the phone.

For what it's worth and other than the medical treatment for his ailments, I don't think the hospital is helping him particularly in getting mobile ... he is in a ward where most are aged 90 and are being left to die. Surely the nursing staff should be getting him exercised at some level but it's not happening. He may also be rather stubborn in the issue because he seemed quite depressed. This may sound rather strong but that's the impression I get. He's really down at the moment and I cannot think of anything to spur him on.

I shall send him some more letters but right now I'm depressed ..... think I'll have a Grolsch or 4.

Just keep on encouraging him and let him know that he has friends pulling for him. If that doesn't work, we'll all fly there and get him going. :D

hats off once again for your efforts, elton. (by the way, interesting post you made previously about the nature of being missed, etc)

my grandmother is now 96 and frail of health, but has generally had an upbeat and sharp mind in her later years. but there were some particular issues which brought her down hard at one point- cataracts and something else i can't remember- and anti-depressants were definitely called for and gave her the focus and motivation she needed to get through that rough patch. stan's situation reminds me of that.

Thank you elton for all you are doing for bluto - he is indeed missed. I wish I'd seen this sooner. What is this patients email service you speak of?

I'm not sure if it doesn't work per se, or whether the porters/messengers/whoever at the hospital are not doing their job. Please note though that he has changed rooms to 315.

If I was closer I'd go visit him but its just not possible.

message sent. Thanks for the info. I really hope he gets well soon.

Do you know if Stan has Internet access?

Not in the hospital Sleepy. I think he is currently too frail even if the opportunity presented it. He's just so unmotivated to do anything; it was quite upsetting talking to him and hearing about his predicament. Hopefully with the encouragement of his son and daughter and some from others he will engage with wanting to get up and out.
