Hey everyone: I've now caught my second cold within the last month. This time I've got a terrible cough with it that's keeping me up and night. I'm wondering if anyone here has any good ideas about a good cough medicine or something else that you have found that works well. I need to get some sleep.
 
Eucalyptus oil has helped me in the past, rub it onto your upper chest and throat, just before you hit the sack.

Copious amounts of Grolsch before bed works for me. Lubricates the throat and stimulates the brain if you know what I mean :)
 
nyquil definitely is great! stay away from those 'thermaflu' packaged drink mix, they don't do anything for you. oh they'll unclog your sinuses for a while but so will a hot cup of water! just from the steam. Vicks Vap-o-rub is good on your temples (helps breathing, neck and upper chest. cover your chest with a warm wet cloth for a while to help break up chest congestion. if your breathing really bad, put a teaspoon of vicks into a pot of hot water cover your entire head with a towel and hover over the pot of water/vicks and just suck that stuff in ( you can also put a tiny bit of vicks right at the bottom of your nasal passage, yeah stick it in your nose to ease breathing, go easy on that, though for too much will start to burn your nose, and with a cold I'm sure your nose is already sore from blowing! I thought of it because it provides Pantothenic Acid which is a good natural antihistamine, but it turns out to also have other benefits which I cannot verify.
I know that I felt better the other day after having me some cauliflower! Don't overcook it as it will diminish or destroy the Pantothenic Acid (a B Vitamin).

Eat it as a side dish if you try it while maintaining calories as Cauliflower is low calorie
and the antibodies need the extra calories from richer sources such as whole wheat bread. On the other hand, a full-density beer might work too!
 
Enough beer in a short amount of time works always to become tired, also without a cold. :pint:

Very hot chicken soup helps against viruses (don't put it in your PC!), to improve respiration and to ease cough.

Else do everything you have fun to do. That makes you feel much better than to take bitter medicine!

A cold lasts up to 2 weeks without medicine and about 14 days with.

I also have a bad cough.

I have 2 solutions,,,,

Second,,,,Suck Up,,, Once you have it,,,,, just know that you will feel like crap
for the next 2 weeks. Like Yogi says,,,You will feel bad for 14 days!!! I am almost
over it. I'm at about 10 days now.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I've got the Vick's on now and I tried it in water and inhaled the steam, so I'll see if that does anything. I'm not really a big fan of any of the cough and cold products on the market as they all seem to leave me with some nasty side effects after. I'm afraid I may just have to put some of my favorite pins on my work laptop and take it to bed with me so when I'm awake from coughing I'll have something to do. So far the only thing I've learned from this is that tv is terrible after 2:00am.
 
Although some of you quote beer as a remedy, I've found that ANY alcohol imbibed lowers my immunity to infections! I know you'd think alcohol would do the opposite, but if it doesn't give me a sore throat it makes me worse. Again this just may be me, I pretty much trashed my body during the 80's and 90's due to 'recreational' drugs and some hard drinking! Having quit all that my body is on the mend (sick-free for 3 yrs. now) not even a sniffle! 'course since my divorce, I've lost over 100 lbs! that may have helped I use to weigh just shy of 300 lbs. now I'm down to 180! and feel so much better for it.
 
The suggestion to drink beer was only meant to become tired in this context. And maybe the following long sleep helps more than any medicine.
 
Never discount beer!! My Doctor has instructed me to have one per day as it seems to help out a muscular problem that I have. He said that studies have shown beer to help slow down the problem better then any of the medications out there.
 
Well I have volunteered to help out many on a daily basis. :joy: It's a difficult job but someone has to do it. :pint:
 
well, on that I agree! also one glass of red wine helps to lower ones risk of heart attacks! (the anitoxidants are but one of many good things about red wine!) so 1 beer shouldn't be too bad! remember I say 1! not 1 sixpack!
Cinnamin also is another good thing (lowers cholestrol) 1 teaspoon (IN something please!) per day. it's quite good in coffee! and with me it helped (when I used to get sick) with congestion
 
I tend to drink more coffee when I have a cold as all the coughing makes my asthma flare up and coffee is good for controlling asthma attacks.
 
Whatever makes you feel better can't be that bad. Don't change your behavior!
