I just downloaded Firefox 3.5 and so far I am liking the speed increase over 3.0. Haven't had much time to notice anything else but the speed increase alone makes it work the download.

thanks. i looked at the advance list of features and didn't see anything in particular that grabbed me at the time. as for speed, maybe the full release has finally caught up to the speed of the portable version.

Rather insulting that it assumes with no option that it will be my default browser. :cuss:

Nothing in the release notes made me want to rush to get it, although there does seem to be some nice features like the "private surfing" thing. I'll look forward to 3.5 when Firefox forces me to update

You must have done the standard install.

I always pick custom install for everything because of stuff like that, at one point during the custom install there is a checkbox for default browser (checked by default).

I dunno about you, but as I installed it, when I got to the choice of "Standard and Custom install" I get this. Attached pic goes here.

 Well I think it's great and many of the issues I was having on my trusty laptop have been resolved by installing it.

It's my preferred browser anyway so the default issue isn't an issue.

I like it.

I installed it too today, dont notice any difference speedwise or otherwise.

Things that sucked:

AllInOneGestures disabled, incompatible, no update, had to install FireGestures instead

ProxySel disabled, incompatible, no update, had to manually alter addon (again) to make it compatible

Default Restart Button gone, reason unknown, also available as addons but their icons all suck

Plus Tab on Tab Bar annoys the hell out of me, (FF goes Opera?), have mouse gestures for that sort of thing

Other: Will know in a week.

Conclusion: Update has no discernable value, introduces problems, could have stayed with 3.0.0.18 (or whatever it was) as well.

Yup, that Plus (+) tab annoys the $%#& out of me too....no real reason to upgrade..and my auto-copy plugin doesnt work now :(

nooooooooooooooo!!!

hmm, so how is firegestures... any good?

Well, now that I got to use 3.5 for a while, my verdict would be:

Wait until they force you to update or they clear a few things up.

That "+" thing is quite confusing and doesn't do the job it's supposed to do that well (I still prefer right-click + "new tab"). I don't notice any speed increase. Every once in a while, some pictures just go black and I have to click/resize/reload them to see them. That didn't happen in 3.0.squat, IE, Opera or Chrome.

Other than the "+" in the little tab wasn't the little tab always there? Since that's they way I have always used tabs maybe I set it up in previous versions and forgot about it. I see there's no option to turn it off, so I guess if you don't like it that's not an option... In IE there is the option to turn the little tab on or off.

As far as I can tell the "+" tab does exactly what it's always done, open a new tab when you left click on it, I don't see any change other than the + sign....

I don't think so. At least I've been right clicking and "new tab"ing for over a year, I'd have noticed if there was something like that.

Nope, thats definitely been introduced with 3.5

May be that there was an option hidden somewhere in about:config to make it appear in pre-3.5 versions but it definitely didnt use to be standard up until now.

Opera has it for a long time though. Last time i used IE is so long ago i cant even remember how it looks. Last IE version i used was 6. No idea what features the newer IEs have.

I double and triple checked before I installed it, I couldn't find the option regarding default browser. Mine had nothing like McD's screenshot, not sure why. Maybe they've changed it since? I didn't save the install package. If it's there now, that's a good thing.

Just went to check the computers in the observatory that I haven't updated yet, no little tab... I use so many different browsers I thought it was there.

Funny there's no option to turn it off, you can in IE, just looked quick through all the config options and didn't see anything hidden in there that would turn it off.

Don't have these problems with lynx.. he he he...:laugh13:

are you all sure that "about:config" doesn't have a way to turn the plus tab off?
(because that would have been my guess)

What i wouldnt mind at all is a little tab (maybe with an S) that stays fixed at the left of the tab bar and opens the SpeedDial page because the SpeedDial tab always vanishes completely as soon as you open any other page. Currently you can only make it your startpage, manually open a new tab, and then click the startpage symbol every time you need it. Rather tedious in my opinion, so an S tab that directly opens a new tab with SpeedDial would definitely make a lot of sense, in any case way more than a plus tab, because for a new tab i can simply mouse-gesture Down/Right,...

that sounds good, even though i have no idea what mozbackup is. XD
(but i can guess)

As you probably guessed, MozBackup lets you backup your Firefox and Thunderbird Profiles. (Among others.)

Very useful for shortening the post-OS-reinstall procedure as you can restore all your mails and bookmarks and addons and settings in a matter of seconds,...

To gain more control over the tabs, you can use an extension that's called tab mix plus.
Tab mix plus can get rid of the annoying new tab button

And for mouse gestures, you can use mouse gestures redox.

I installed FF3.5 over FF3.0 and I did not notice any speed increase. But then I uninstalled FF with the help of revouninstaller to make sure everything is gone, and then installed FF3.5 and did notice a speed increase.

I would also recommend the extension called password exporter
