The Gruen Transfer is an australian tv show that critiques the world of advertising. Every week they have a segment called "the pitch" in which two advertising companies have a representative challenged to create an advertisement for a challenging thing. In the past, they have produced ads for many unapealing things including confronting topics such as child labour.
On may 13, the pitch was about "fat pride" the idea was to create adds that would go towards ending discrimination based on size. One company used the angle that fatter or obese people were "Super Consumers" who due to their need for larger clothing, greater food or whatever, were likely saviours for the economy and the country, and as such should be proud of their efforts and there responsibility for the support of the floundering national economy.
The foundry took a verry different angle, and the add they created was so confronting as to be refused clasification, and was not permitted to be aired. At all.
It has been placed, along with many disclaimers and a panel discussion online at this address:

The questions are these: Does it go too far? Would it be successful? Would viewers switch off and get angry before it got to its point? Should it have been refused inclusion in the show, or the right to be aired? (as it was refused)
How much does it say about us, and how the world is changing? I think it might have gotten through the media bosses and been aired 20 years ago. Maybe even 10. But now it is just too confronting and offensive. No question it IS a stomach churning add, and it IS incredibly offensive and confronting. so be warned of this before following the link.
What do you guys think? Discuss. I felt dirty after watching it. But the discussion afterwards was interesting.
