You are absolutely right Steve, but its not going to happen.
Its a typical Egg/Hen Scenario, for the one thing to happen the other has to happen first.

Refusing to take part is one solution, but its not a solution for everyone. (At least not a long-run one.) Because some things will never run on Linux, so unless you are prepared to give up on these things forever, what else can you do but to use Windows? Likewise, some things will not only run on Windows only, but also only on newer versions of Windows. So again, unless you are prepared to pass on these things, what can you do but to use a newer Windows?
Of course this being-forced is crap deluxe, but MS know that the users have no choice. Thats why they can get away with this, which of course makes the whole thing even worse but doesnt touch the fact that there will be no alternative,...
