when i went back to chautauqua inst. this summer i realised how revitalising the learning process can be. focusing on a lecturer and being open to what they're saying can add so much flavor and energy beyond simply reading the same material as text.

Is that clip from "The Power of Myth"? I loved that on PBS, never got it on DVD.

Another good Joseph Campbell DVD is "The Hero's Journey".

Funny thing about him, I've seen videos of him lecturing in front of classes, interviews, and him lecturing to the camera, all great... But I've tried to read his books and find them so dry I quit on them.

yea, it's from the "power of myth" series. what's been great for me is that re-watching it ten and then twenty years later i understand so much more and am able to get all kinds of new stuff out of it. so cool when that happens. a lot of other stuff i try to re-read / re-watch and i'm shocked at how boring and disappointing it can be.

never did watch "the hero's journey"... i'll have to look for that.

i agree about the books, or at least the one time i tried to read a campbell book... "this business of the gods" or something like that. i'll have to give it another shot sometime and see if the same happens.

nice! i really like history also, although most of my knowledge of the roman empire stems from being inspired by "i claudius." (remember that awesome BBC series?)

in particular i would love to learn just exactly how much the roman empire in the 200's - 300's shaped and then vampirised the christian religion. i mean, so many early christian books and gospels were banned and destroyed, some of which were later found around 1948 in two man sites. yet most christians today know almost nothing of this and assume that the present-day bible came down straight from yshua through god.

Watching I, Claudius so many years ago (and then reading the 2 Robert Graves books... must-reads, Nic!) planted the seed for my current Ancient-Rome obsession. I, too, am ready to move on through the ages. I would love to find a good book that covers the latter Roman epoch that you mentioned and all the fun little pranks that the Christians pulled on the poor Romans. My niece sent me an invitation to a Facebook group called "Keeping the Christ in Christmas". I told her I'd sign up if she joined my "putting Apollo back in Christmas" group since Santa Claus stole that noble feast day from the Romans!

i've kind of had the graves book on my list for a long time but never got round to them. let me know if you do find a book about the synthesis of rome and christianity.

btw, do you see any parallels between the crash of rome and modern times?

The Governor released a statement that this was "a fantastic coincidence" after someone took notice.
