Absolutely not. And that's the way Bowie liked it. Especially after he retired in 2004, there was an article about once a year concerning "Whatever happened to...?" David's a tough one to lose for people like me raised on 1970s radio. Man, if Ziggy Stardust isn't immortal, what does that say for the rest of us? Does this mean Robert Plant can die, too?

i got the impression a while back that he was a heavy smoker most of his life. so... not totally surprised.

i'll definitely be doing multiple tributes to him on upcoming karaoke nights.

I'm not making excuses, but Steve Jones, former guitarist for The Sex Pistols, is now a DJ in Los Angeles, and he pointed out that, "while quitting smoking was a good thing, that Bowie had his first heart attack after quitting smoking in 2004. So he wasn't sure about smoking as the cause".
It could be from the heavy drug use. Cocaine and alcohol.

The talk is that Bowie died from liver cancer. I think that's probably correct since he was still singing to the end which would preclude lung or throat cancers.

Steve Jones closed his program with a solo live performance of "Heroes" on acoustic guitar and vocal. It was a nice tribute.

but as i understand it, toxins and free radicals from smoking don't just remain in the lungs. before he quit, he may have already had many decades of crap distributed across his body, which would have taken a long time to get cleaned up by his immune system.

i've read more than once that the body produces cancer cells every minute, but obviously the vast majority of them get cleaned up by the defense crew.

Well, no. Lung cancer is the main smoking-related cancer, while throat cancer from tobacco is ~1% in a lifetime of use. All other smoking-related cancers are less than 1% in a lifetime of use.

But mixing cocaine and alcohol are documented as being destructive of the liver. And liver damage will impact the body's ability to detox itself. The fact that the liver is the single-most regenerative organ in the body is very telling when it quits.
David Crosby had a liver transplant, probably due to the same abuses.

well, everything i've seen so far mentions a range of cancers from smoking. it's hard to imagine so many body areas being mentioned if the risk truly is so low.

Is David Bowie going to be buried ? Cause... I keep hearing him singing "Under Ground, Under Ground" in my mind all day today.

We have been talking a lot about Bowie the past two days. I was lucky to see David Bowie play at the Capitol Center Arena just outside Washington DC in 1977. It was one of the best sounding shows ever. I had seen Led Zeppelin at that venue and it was the worst concert sound I ever suffered thru. I guess Zeppelin's sound guy's ears were fried. The overwhelming distortion was literally making me sick. The Bowie show sounded clear solid and other worldly. For years I had taken the 'Bowie' Maryland exit off I495 to the Capitol Center.

Today I continued to be haunted by his 'Underground' song. I could not find that song in our collection. I ask my wife, she Said "That's because It's from the Movie Labyrinth" I'm attaching the song 'Underground' From the DVD...

So that makes the death rate from smoking-related lung cancer to be less than one-fourth of one percent of the smoking population of Kentucky for 2015.

Cancers of the mouth and throat

Cigarette, pipe and cigar smoking are all major risk factors for cancers associated with the larynx, oral cavity and oesophagus. The risk for these cancers increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and those who smoke pipes or cigars experience a risk similar to that of cigarette smokers. It has been estimated that smoking is a cause of 85% of deaths from oral cancer (cancers of the lip, tongue, mouth and throat) amongst men in industrialised countries.

Heavy smokers have laryngeal cancer mortality risks 20 to 30 times greater than non-smokers. People who combined alcohol and tobacco use have a much higher risk of oral and pharyngeal (throat) cancers than those using tobacco or alcohol individually.

Bladder cancer

Tobacco smoking is the principal preventable risk factor for bladder cancer in both men and women. The European Network of Cancer Registries states that bladder cancer is the 7th most common form of cancer amongst men and 14th amongst women and cites cigarette smoking as the principle risk factor. According to Cancer Research UK, the risk of developing bladder cancer is six times higher in current smokers than in people who have never smoked. As with lung cancer, the risk is associated with both the dose and duration of smoking, while cessation of smoking reduces the risk, returning to that of a non-smoker after 15 years.​

Oral Cavity and Pharynx > New Cases: 3,995 | Expected Deaths:56,230

Lung and Bronchus >New Cases:16,440 | Expected Deaths:12,690

( could go on, but just adding the figures for "Expected Death" produces a total that is greater than the 16,000 smoking-related cancer deaths in California. However, those are low figures given the several million smokers who live here, and they do indicate the lower rates for smoking-related cancers other than for lung cancer.

I noticed that those sites that you pointed to do not quote actual figures. They rely on high percentage figures in order to promote donations. However, to say that "smoking is a cause of 85% of deaths from oral cancer" is simply not the same as stating, "In California, smoking is a cause of 85% of the 56,230 deaths from oral cancer

Now I have a problem. Anytime there is a cancer case or death of a patient who has even so much as tried a single cigarette in an entire lifetime or who has been exposed to Second or Third-Hand Smoke, that death will be recorded as "smoking-related", usually for the purposes of Grants and revenue. The official California estimated oral cavity cancer death rate of 56,230 are not consistent with the "85% figure", and half of that figure would be 28,115 deaths. If we assume the cancer.org claim of half of those deaths "being caused by tobacco", then how do we reconcile the official American Cancer Society's California smoking-related death rate "of about 16,000/yr"? More 16,000 is nowhere near the 56,230 oral cases alone, which I assume are not smoking-related given that lung cancer is still the no. 1 killer.

In total, the official State report figures indicate that non-tobacco cancers outnumber smoking cancers 2-to-1. I might consider other common factors between both groups. Stress, diet, sleep, virus, etc. I saw a report "about Second-Hand Smoke and Cervical Cancer", but that cancer is already documented as caused by virus.

Understand, I'm not defending tobacco use. It is my Right to choose, and arguments won't matter in the end.
What I am defending is Truth, by quoting the actual figures from the reliable sources.
The hysteria and abuse of fantastic numbers and bogus percentages by charities-for-profit are not indicative of the issues, and as such, only misdirect the search for the cure.

Thank you Ike. I started looking this stuff up a few years back when there was a California Proposition on the ballot that demanded a $2 a pack tax "to pay for health care". This was created by the medical community. Well, how the Hell can they blame cancer on smoking and then demand a $2/pack tax to provide health care for non-tobacco cases?
