I had seen a few games get in the budget bin *$3.99* at a local Big Lots, so today I decided to stop and shop a bit and I purchased Evil Genius *just installed, didn't play it yet*, and Bard's Tale.

So far I'm lucky, the game *supposably* requires XP or 2000, but yet it installed and runs so far on 98SE *I have XP on layaway atm* It also *supposably* requires a 933 processor, but it runs fine on my 900 mhz PC...

I have the graphics set at 1024 X 768, although I didn't notice much difference between it and 640 X 480.

Enough about the specs, I found the game enjoyable and it works with my Dual Shock controller. It's fun, has humor without going overboard *yet* and it looks like I'll play this to the end...unlike many games I own...

So has anyone else found a game in the budget bin that they thought was better than they initially expected? What were the games?

Also, I tend to find the less I pay for games, the more I enjoy them. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure some of you got more than $70 *of gameplay* out of Halo 2 or other games, but I tend to find when I pay full price, I'm often dissapointed with the games...

Does anyone else have similiar experiences?

Evil Genius was ok, with problems. After playing it through it got quite boring. Why do I have to wait around while my minions run back and forth to the storeroom to carry such a small amount of money with them to buy anything, and why does it take 30 minutes to build a single room? And why can't the cameras automatically be set to tag enemy agents for me? Micromanagement to an extreme. Most sierra pinball games suck IMO. They have been talking about making an Evil Genius 2 for some time, but I'll play it when I see it. Too much like Dungeon Keeper.

As for budget bin games, no, I haven't really found any great games in the budget bin that I didn't buy years ago for full price, that were any good. I generally buy 'good' games too soon, and end up paying more than I would otherwise. My best acquisition was VP/VPM - and those were free...5 years of free entertainment. :)

Yeah, though I will say that even after 8 years, if you are into RTS games, and don't have StarCraft, you should. Still as good as most games released to this day.

Homeworld is another one, that should have gotten more attention than it did. Most of the modern releases though, pretty much the same game we all were playing years ago, just better graphics.

For me, budget bin? Any "classic" series from the arcades. Always worth the money, because the games were always good. Bubble Bobble, tempest, ghosts and goblins, ROBOTRON! (loved that one)

Well I haven't played Evil Genius yet, but I thought I could get $4 of entertainment out of it, at least it didn't cost me $1 billion dollars! LOL :)
I'll definitely get my money's worth out of Bard's Tale...

I have both Homeworlds and Starcraft, I think I need to reinstall all of them...I probably will after I finish paying off my copy of Windows XP, which is on layaway at Wal Mart...

Yup, I'm embracing the "dark side"...
