did they ever get around to optimising later MAME builds for mid-tier machines? i rarely play games on PC anymore so my desktop and laptop are just average in speed with no special gfx cards installed.

also, just trying to figure out how to look through screenshots of all the thousands of ROMs they’ve added the last 5+ years.... ugh. feels as daunting as going down to my storage unit and sifting through boxes and boxes of old stuff to find something interesting.

I never wanted the full set because there's way too much crap.

I don't have any of the Mahjong & quiz shit... or the Chinese fruit machines... card games and all that.... I have only the pure arcade games... and no clones... a few exceptions though.

I have carefully picked up the ROMs I want to keep from RetroRoms and I have pretty solid collection. 2755 games out of what... 6000 (that amount has the clones though).

There haven't been anything significant added in the past few years... I had 1.35 up until last week when I upgraded to the newest version. I did it only because of the new vector emulation which is incredible.

Star Wars Trilogy is now playable on Supermodel emulator. That's pretty much the only "milestone" game there's left to emulate.

haha, those were the days, my friend...


stevoz used to guide me on this stuff back in the middle ages... i basically just need some site that lets you scroll through pages of thumbnails (or modest-sized screenshots) of ROM updates in order of date. i don't mind if it takes me a week to go through them all, just not looking forward to endless rounds of 'guess what the name means' and have to click to open a shot every time.

yes, spoiled rotten for sure! :D but there did used to be a couple sites that did that, a long time ago on an internet far, far away.

wow... can't believe it's been 15 years or so since i first discovered MAME! those innocent days of '97 - '98...

Here's how to do it:

1. You need MAMEUIFX.
http://mame32fx.altervista.org/home.htm

That installs a frontend which lets you sort the games by "working", "available", etc.

Here's my MAMEUIFX menu:

2. Then register at www.retroroms.com -> Go to downloads -> currentroms.

Just check the main version rom name directly from MAMEUIFX menu and download the responding rom set. Usually you just need the latest dump... like Asteroids Deluxe version 4. That is named astledux.zip.

That's it. You only need samples and artwork and all that stuff. Everything can be found here:

Edit: You also need the high score saving don't you... here's the unofficial highscore.dat. UnRAR this to \dats folder and you're set.

HLSL is pretty cool... you can also use it on the raster games... to imitate a vintage monitor display.

It looks like this can't be done within MAMEUIFX and I would never try to download all of the games individually, just wondering if you have a torrent or Usenet suggestion for your library?

And the rom name can definitely be checked on MAMEUIFX... just scroll the main gamename bar on the right until you get "ROM name" visible. You can re-arrange those fields easily. If you look at my screenshot (of MAMEUIFX menu) you'll see that there.

meh... TBH, i get a lot of enjoyment out of sifting through the screenshots of update history and then deciding whether to download or not. sort of a game in itself in which i try to predict gems and avoid clunkers... also to get a sense of the history of the project and the updates. dunno if that makes sense, but there you go.

if i downloaded in one lump sum and then played through the lot it just wouldn't be the same. childish, i know. but i'm up for a game of anything at all... card games... weird games... darkhorses... it's just kind of fun this way.

I'm sort of new to this, but I had an older version. I did the torrent and got the zip, xml, and the dat file. I take it I unzip it to my roms folder and overwrite everything, and that's it?

I did also got the MAMEUFIFX.
