Game was idle, flippers suddenly of their own accord started going nuts, then quit. No blown fuses, wires all connected and clean, no video either but that was going out anyway, bad connection on the display. Heard there was a color display out there? But I can play without the display... Any ideas?

It sounds like there’s a problem with the flipper button opto board(s). If the opto’s are going bad the flippers may start going nuts.
The fliptronic board may also be the problem. Check all solder connections and test for bad components.

Opto boards were replaced just a couple of years ago, hardly any play time on them. Not sure what components you are suggesting to test. A list of pin out output voltages would help me test the board though.

The pinball database has a download for the operations manual. On page 3-15 is the pinout chart for the fliptronic board. This problem sounds like the data isn’t working correctly between the fliptronic and the cpu boards. The data ribbon cable would be the next suspect.
