okay then, here is today's CRAZY rant from me:


brothers and sisters! have you seen this pic of "enteric coated drug delivery capsule!?" well, have you!?

so i hadn't quite realised that each of the little grains inside the capsule that we swallow is itself a capsule with the desired meds inside. with the meds likely mixed in to a base of time-release medium. i.e., not just relying on the micro-capsules to do the slow-releasing. does that sound right to anyone? so then...

There are two versions of time released medication:
(1)Formulating the micro-encapsulation to release based on the simple wetting of the capsule.
(2)Formulating the micro-encapsulation to react to the specific chemistry of the targeted release area, i.e., the stomach, the small intestine, the large intestine.

The first widely available micro-encapsulated product was "Contact", an over the counter colds-and-flu relief aid.

A parallel to micro-encapsulation can be found in the dissolving stitch, don't know what they call it, a bio-degradable medical stitching thread that dissolves / is absorbed by active cells within two weeks to a month leaving no trace. This allows using internal stitches that do not require manual removal.
A side benefit to this material is, when used to connect a severed tendon,
the dissolving stitch material acts as a runner due to it's nutritional composition,
and it benefits the severed tendon in allowing it to regenerate whole, even when there are missing lengths to the injured tendon, and in other wounds decreases the likelyhood of irregular seams and scar tissue.

I think I was one of the first recipients of it, in 1963 at Children's Hospital Pittsburgh, Pa. for cleft palate surgery.

if i were a guessing man, i would guess 'catalyst-limited reaction well into bloodstream cycle' more then 'only later segment of GI tract is able to key on that certain chemical package'. *shrug*

The GI tract release was where it started in the early 60's.
Intrinsic releases in organs and other body areas came later.

That reminds me. They took a 5 minute X-Ray video of me with sound at the age of 6,
in profile, answering questions, chewing food and swallowing water.
It is humbling to witness one's own skull and bones, teeth and tongue, in motion while listening to the verbal responses.

I would love to have a copy of that on disc!

Don't remember though whether I whistled through my teeth or drank from a box of...

I got dissolving stitches when back in the early 80's
I had to get five teeth pulled in the same day!
I went in due to a toothache and left five teeth lighter
with fifteen stitches on the left side of my mouth
(never did get those teeth replaced)
and due to a losing battle with the butt end of a pool stick
over a waqed game in the 90's I lost most of my upper teeth
so now have only a few real teeth left!

i have slacked on my oral hygiene the last decade or so and it's going to cost me... no doubt is already costing me. studies continue to suggest that bacterial buildup in the mouth is a very serious issue. the teeth may seem like the victims (i've lost a couple molars, fortunately no complications), but the main problem is the constant flood of bacteria in to your GI tract, causing all kinds of bodily consequences over time.

buddy of mine lost his teeth as a youngish man, mainly due to genetically terrible teeth, and has been flying high with dentures ever since. the more i read and understand, the more i kind of envy him. awkward in the beginning, but perhaps a marvelous health move in the end.
