Gottlieb Joker Poker (Gottlieb, 1978) score resetting issue...

On a '78 Gottlieb Joker Poker solid state machine am having some difficulty resetting the scores to earn an extra ball. While in extra ball mode, I am following the process as described in the owners manual. I go into Step 7 of "bookeeping/self-test" mode and try and set the first high score extra ball level at 240,000 points (after pressing switch button #25 on A1 CPU control board as per instructions).

Then I move to Step 8 to set the second high score for extra ball at 370,000. Repeat this for Step 9 and set the third high score for extra ball at 510,000. Completing this by advancing play/test button to Step 10 thru Step 13.

After doing this I restart a game and the first high score extra ball threshold reverts back to 60,000 points! Very odd. The machine had been working properly for years at the desired level (240k, 370k, 510k) but for some reason now I don't seem able to reset properly.

Any help, ideas appreciated. thanks.

Whenever a cpu can’t remember settings the battery should be the first suspect.

Do I understand correctly that it would be better to replace the battery?

Yes once the battery looses it ability to recharge and hold a charge ,battery leakage soon follows that will harm components and edge connectors. Many people will wire in a off board battery holder to avoid this problem.

Update: I changed the 3 batteries (my machine has a battery holder off-board as pinballdaveh mentions above). The good news is that the 1st score reset itself to 260k which is much better than previous 60k. But, going thru the resetting process doesn't seem to work. For now, will live with it. Thanks.
