It happened during the best trip of my life and I wouldn't trade it for a night anywhere else. My friend Laird and I set off on a cross country trip from CA to my sisters graduation in NY in his fathers brand new 1976 LTD, wonderful things happened during that trip.
First destination was Laird's grandmother's farm in the great state of Minnesota, should have taken 3 days to get there, we took 4 because we had a dope bag that had a bong and an electric pipe, we were teenagers in a new car! Still boggles my mind why Laird's father gave 2 kids a brand new car to go across the country in, I've concluded that he anticipated what fun we'd have.
The farm in Minnesota was fantastic and huge, we spent the nights in the local bowling alley playing pins and trying to wrestle the gorgeous girls from their boyfriends, new California plates had a lot of clout back then.
Made our way to NY with a few great stops, one was in Sandusky, OH where the awesome Cedar Point amusement park is now, got lucky but I didn't see the park until 25 yrs. later.
Both of us had a great time in NY (my family lived there) and eventually had to get back to CA, day before we were supposed to go, I smashed the brand new LTD into another car and was horrified about Laird's fathers potential reaction. He acted like he expected the car to not come back and just told me to take care of Laird and wait a few days for the repairs to be made, I was astonished and we celebrated until the repairs were completed.
Our trip home was fantastic, I already missed my 2 week vacation limit by 1 week and it just didn't matter anymore, we got lost by over 500 miles while smokin' dope and following girls. I got caught speeding outside of North Platte Nebraska (truly an ugly state, they got corn) and had to follow a cop to the courthouse which was closed, found out we needed $50.00 cash to alleviate the problem, travelers checks were not accepted.
Spent a great night in jail in North Platte Nebraska, they had women throwing beers and weed up into the jail, my friend Laird was free and had a worse experience in N. Platte. Got free and sorta wanted to go back, we did make it home in CA but it was a great trip and my favorite memory is from the mountains above Cheyenne, Wyoming on the way home and the superb sunset. Laird's father just wanted to hear about the trip, didn't really seem to care about his car...
