OMG - total reinstall of Windows XP

THIS SUCKS. I had to reinstall Windows XP since my laptop was lagging ass.

Give me time to get situated if anyone needs anything. Glad I backed up 95% of everything I had!

Well, on top of all my links being lost I've been starting all over again. Funny as I'm finding stuff I never new existed as I've added to the uploads area.

Finally this thing runs right!!!

I had one computer that I had to reinstall XP every few months, so I can imagine your headaches. Glad you got things sorted out.

The nice thing about XP is the recovery feature. I NOW will backup and go back if I have any problems later. It's too bad I lost a TON of links, but I am finding them once again.

I also have had problems with my Norton Antivirus software disk; it won't work so I downloaded StopZilla and it works perfect.

IMO Norton antivirus is a total resource hog. I haven't tried StopZilla but Avast is rather good also.

So far, StopZilla has been perfect but it does run the hard disk A LOT. Of course it doesn't slow down the overall performance of this laptop, so I'll keep it for now until I can find something better.

Yes, Norton products are a pain in the ass. I'll never reinstall it again.

I'm using Avast and so far it's pretty good.

You may want to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as well.

Yes. I was using Avast until my bank kindly provided FOC Kaspersky. So far so good.

I purchased Malwarebytes & SuperAntispyware. Both excellent products after having a wee infection a couple months ago. The Avast forums were particularly helpful in removing the virus.

Thanks for reminding me that I wanted to buy the full version of Malwarebytes. It helped me reclaim my computer a while back after it was hijacked by some nasty stuff.

The product is good and with the paid version it comes with automatic updates to later releases. So I am a happy bunny.

I use http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-free just switched to it lately seems to be very good, had to ditch AVG free as it was getting too invasive, bloated and I don't agree with apps that install plugins to firefox without option. Did a full scan with avira and it picked up 2 problems AVG never did.

I've never had to reinstall XP on my 5 year old rig and its running as good as new, actually better, I've done that many tweaks to it I've forgotten most of them here's a good place to start...

Mind you I could almost run without a virus scanner as I only use Firefox with NoScript, AdBlock Plus, Ghostery and BetterPrivacy Add-ons. I also immunise with spybot search and destroy and spyware blaster, so there's not much that's going to get through my .net, oh and I also use peerblocker. :)

Also for window dressing xpize is great.

This sounds familiar to my setup that I had been running for years with no problem then lightning got in somehow and burned my graphics as well as a SATA card I had installed. I did not know that the SATA card was fried though and it was causing my PC to run very slow or not boot up at all in some cases, I got tired of messing with it and just used Bart PE to rescue the stuff I needed and reformatted the HDD. I installed XP again and have went back to the same setup and have been using Avast and everything fine for about 6 months now and then suddenly started getting the BSOD. After looking up the name of the file it seems to be associated with Avast which is a shame because that has been my favorite AV for a long time now. I uninstalled Avast and have not gotten the BSOD again. I searched the net for an answer but never really found one that worked for me. I installed AVG and don't really care for it much but am afraid to go back to Avast for fear of the BSOD symptoms again.

Avast is really nice! Thanks for the info. Got rid of StopZilla since it took like two minutes for my machine to load. That is really stupid. Avast loads lightning fast and updates constantly. I've also gotten warnings from sites too. This does work. I'm impressed. Thanks again.

As a little aside, with Avast on National Pirates Day they changed the voice to a typical pirate ... so instead of 'Your virus definitions has been updated' you were greeted with 'Avast me heartys, your chest of dangerous seadogs is safely aboard [or words to that effect]. Rather fun I thought. :)

My daughter in University is a member of the Pirates Association so everyone switched to Avast once she'd informed them.
