The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.</dt><dd class="author">Mahatma Gandhi

Tight, I'm in 2 minds about this, idealistically it seems correct, realistically, the cynic in me just can't believe in it.

OK how about the lost legacy?

Thomas Jefferson

There is not a truth existing which I fear or would wish unknown to the whole world.

so you are quoting a drunken, womanizing slave owner, yay for the USA! Our forefathers were not as nice as most people think. Good Ol' GW owned slaves had numerous mistresses AND grew POT at his estate in the north pocono area (valley forge I think but don't quote me) so let's not start quoting our 'great' founders just yet! Gandhi is a much better influence than any of our past presidents ever could be. no offense i AM patriotic but I don't agree with most of what our country thinks is 'right' for its citizens...

Well I'll look into that, I'm somewhat confused does Thomas Jefferson = Good Ol' GW?

Either way perhaps if what you say is the truth then at the very least, he was true to his word. ;)

A man's country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers, and woods, but it is a principle; and patriotism is loyalty to that principle.

George William Curtis

A thoughtful mind, when it sees a Nation's flag, sees not the flag only, but the Nation itself; and whatever may be its symbols, its insignia, he reads chiefly in the flag the Government, the principles, the truths, the history which belongs to the Nation that sets it forth.

Henry Ward Beecher

I am not a patriot for it is to me ignorance at best or otherwise it is collusion.

*sigh* Thomas Jefferson was not a drunk. George Washington was very faithful to his wife Martha, wrote her every single day that he was apart from her. He did not grow pot, he grew hemp, a completely legal crop to grow at the time.
You may be patriotic, but you don't seem to be very bright. Do you truly expect great men to be completely flawless? Is that the bar you hold your leaders to? How about a vegetarian who never drank alcohol and never messed with the ladies? Allow me to introduce you to your new hero, Adolf Hitler. Sure makes drunken Churchill and philandering FDR look pretty good, doesn't it?

As for Ghandi I think there needs to be a consideration of the difference between being "Strong" and being "Forceful".
Being forceful is often confused with being strong.
Being forceful is too often an act of blind desperation.

Hey Faralos, Thomas Jefferson stayed at my great, great, great, great, great Grandfather's Inn the night before the Inauguration, so we were somehow trusted.
I don't know if he was drunk at the time or whether we ran out!
This is the government page with the plaque from the building.
I am not Conrad!

Alexander McMunn was also involved with the casket making for Washington's funeral, so he had some connections. The funny thing is, he was a new immigrant. The other funny thing is, my family never told me about him or about anything special about the family, including money which they've hidden like Scrooge.
I found out through a genealogy page maintained by distant relations.

You do remind me though.
On reading up about what he meant with respect to Separation of Church and State, the rumors of Thomas Jefferson's drunken indiscretions appear to be founded on the basis of his fondness for celebrating Christmas as A Revelry, possibly in contradiction to the pious commemorations that were enforced by Cromwell in England. Cromwell persecuted those who enjoyed their holiday spirits, along with the expulsion of Christmas hooliganism.
Christmas hooliganism* is represented by the story "A Christmas Carol" where Scrooge is influenced to consider himself in the place of his manservants and maids such as Bob Cratchit, while in the same story Revelry is represented as the Fiddle and Punchbowl celebrations given by Scrooge's benevolent boss Fezziwig.

Cromwell considered such festivities to be a sacrilege to his concept of a God.

In current times, the heresay about Jefferson's indiscretions are part of "A Cromwell Attack" to discredit the Founding Father's intents and to rewrite history and enforce Religion in government by false piety, like Cromwell and The Massachusetts Bay Colony did, on our moneys, and in our Pledge of Allegiance against our Right to Freedom of Religion (or No Religion) by Individual Choice and not by the Advocacies of Authority.

*In England Christmas hooliganism was a celebration where the bosses and employees swapped places for a day.

Hey Pinsters! Been a long, long time - but this kind of thread I cannot ignore.

Indeed, the definitions of 'Strong' and 'Weak' are somewhat subjective. I prefer the term 'Powerful' - and choose to interpret this attribute as a quality of consciousness which confers upon it's possessor a broader spectrum of personal choice based on self-knowledge, in particular awareness of drives originating from the ego.

Right on mate! As Einstein said 'The Germans call me a german, while the "French consider me a citizen of the world" '
How can one be 'proud' of something which was essentially an accident of Birth? Blessed, perhaps, but not 'proud' - therein lies the seeds of Elitism.

My contributions:

a) 'Each [wo]man is guilty of all the good he did not do' ~ Voltaire (my parenthesis)

b) When asked 'How do we solve the problems of the world', the Master answered: 'Meditate, practise Compassion and be Happy. When you do these three things, anything is possible.'

c) 'The definition of insanity is to try the same thing over and over, and expect a different result' ~ Einstein again *think GFC, prohibition & land wars in Asia*

d) 'Never, ever play the online MMOG 'evony' - it's computer-crack on steroids' ~ Meecro Hyperion

No prizes for guessing the originator of b) :)

I LOVE this one from Groucho Marx:

"He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot".

Personally I know a few folks I've met that fit this bill PERFECTLY.

Excellent words from the grandmaster of the black and white comedy days.

This one is from me (I came up with this one): "The downfall of man shall be man".
