A Great MAME ROMS Site

Yeah, I know.

I used to run into problems with VP8 and 9. Using Fartians VPMAn as a front end I spent hours and hours getting everything as I wanted it ... then oops .... it's totally fubared again. I'm like 'what did I do?' One of the reasons that I no longer have VP installed ..... pain in the freakin' ass!

Minor shit happening that took out all the fun ... super slow tables .... juddery tables etc etc.

Hay ho ... it happens, and I moved on.

Was always threatening to reinstall when I had a better rig .... but it never happened. Now, too busy with life :D

Well, shit... remind me never to retire. :(

Retirement is great Ike .... don't let anyone tell you otherwise ;)

believe it or not i just got my AARP card the same day i read this post!

@MAME,
cor-blimey, this has turned in to a project and a half-ass. like, okay... i finally got through looking at the 8000 screenshots and selected about 140 interesting-looking games.

i'm now about halfway through downloading and trying to get them to run correctly, and incidentally of course i somehow realise i need the updated BIOS pack that enables at least a few of them. (yes i'm an idiot about that part)

good heavens, i did get my *FIRST* CHD file downloaded and installed successfully. it was only 10mb, thank gawd, for "Konami's 80's Classics."

my main problem remains trying to figure out why i seem to have every necessary ROM, yet MAME telling me that something or anything is missing.

speed issues are the next series of holdups. it really is crazy to remember an ancient system of yours running certain games perfectly smoothly, and now, your much more advanced system runs the same type of game at a snail's pace.

meanwhile, just as i'm in the middle of this process, MAME somehow went through a major update, in which key rendering tools involved with making LCD monitors look like old CRT's got completely changed / updated. yes... MAME .172 just came out, and the world just changed again!!

did i mention the phrase "MUVVLE FLUFFLE!" at any point in this process?

The MAME > Right-Click on Game > Properties > General tab usually lists the necessary ROMs, CHDs and BIOS files. I forget that stuff until I encounter it again.

On a related note, I like the Namco Museum series (and Hot Shot Golf) for Playstation. The AdriPSX emulator runs well on my system, though settings are critical to prevent crash. Got it at Zophars Domain. The Playstation version of Chrono Trigger is identical to the SNES version, except for several videos.

i appreciate the idea, but that was a LONG time ago. i really loved that interface, but it's long gone at this point.

they make the interface now like what you might want as a custom cab owner... a really shady move IMO since the MAMEdevs love to preach your ass off about how "illegal your setup is."

to be fair, this is all probably just lawyer and self-preservation stuff on their part...

Well. I wa afraid they did somethin.

i finally got all ~140 new games installed and am trying to get a handle on what i'm working with at this point. there are definitely some strong contenders for 'hidden gems', i think. more on that later.

what i just learned a day or two ago is that MAME has also been covering handheld devices! i don't think there's a huge number emulated right now, but given that the devs are pretty obsessive, this is a pretty good sign. attached is an example-- Electronic Baseball 2 (Entex, 1979).

EDIT: i'm not sure why there are emoticons representing players on the field. someone's idea of a joke? in any case, the game actually does run so... *shrug*

here's a video of new games emulated which shows some more handheld examples:

Well done :)

You are on the ball .... keep it going so when I eventually manage to spare time for MAME you can provide assistance ;) :appl:

well elton, i'm done with most of the grunt and tech work at this point.

i found out that the reason MAME does handhelds now is because it merged with MESS at some point. this means it can now emulate lots of console and computer systems. i don't particularly need that, but i guess some cabinet owners will want to set up an all-in-one menu system.

there are roughly 2-3 dozen handhelds working at this point, altho they only have the screens emulated, not the cases. this is one that's covered, a somewhat unusual dual-screen game by tomy:

...

CLRMAMEPRO was a lot easier to use than i had imagined. all i had to do was show it which MAME version i used and it automatically downloaded the correct .dat files. another click or two and it successfully went through the entire ROM collection and patched what it could. in the end it got a couple dozen games working again, including one which was baffling me.

...

the last item of note is that HLSL is a fun graphics option they added a couple years ago to help LCD monitors display like the glowing raster monitors from the arcades. here's a sample which kristian had posted before:

...

at this point all i want is a way to quickly nuke games i have no interest in, so they don't clutter up my "available" list. that, and to figure out which graphics mode is best for games that run slowly.

there's also a lot of new games to try out, now that i've got them working. i imagine about a fifth or so are going to be worth recommending in the end. it seems it's been 13 years since i last updated MAME. :)

Don't nuke 'em. Just mark your Favorites, then select from the Favorites folder. Or did they drop that feature?

Nic, you're really gonna have to bring this down to a "Goodnight Moon" level when I get my computer back. I crapped out on both new Mame and VP10. Hell, that's probably what broke my computer! Well... that and the "fatty porn".

Meanwhile, being computer-less, I've been working on soft-modding the ol' Wii. They claim their Mame emu works. I find that claim to be dubious. But I do have Nes, Snes, Genesis, N64 and GameCube working on it so far... all so I could play Rogue Squadron! I love that game. A couple more emus and I'll catch up to JPH!

no, i definitely want to nuke them. i don't want them in my master lists.

sometimes i need to go through the entire available list for various reasons, and i don't need a million versions of space invaders, useless clones, and other kipple cluttering things up.

btw, i tried MAMEUIFX last night, and it preserves the style that we're used to (the non-frontend style). i'm still not quite sure why the devs got rid of that, because it had a lot of advantages, for example being able to set up individual game prefs instead of editing each ROM's .ini file.

well at least you enjoyed yourself! anyway yeah, anyone who's thinking of updating soon, i can prolly answer most questions about the latest build. "but who knows what future things the future will bring... in the future." --criswell.

really, the wii can be modded? how does that work...?

It's a weird trick you can pull if you have Wii Smash Bros. They left a hole in the design-your-own-level section that can be exploited, and from there, it's Mame-ing heaven! It also took me quite a bit of research and trial-and-error to get it all going but, outside of their faulty Mame engine, it works pretty well!

I bet Criswell liked "fatty porn".

Naw. Criswell, he liked Kathryn Kuhlman, with music by Korla Pandit.

you guys can turn anything in to a music discussion!

interesting version, but i'm a gonna stick with the beach boys uptempo surfer version for now:

btw, sleepy, i don't recall a watermelon in "charade." it was about a group of former OSS guys who stole $250K from the govt during WWII, stashed it, then came back to paris to track it down... and murder each other.

My mistake. I was following the George Kennedy and Walter Mathau connection.
I believe I was thinking of "Mirage" (1965) with Gregory Peck. But Damn! I just realized something. I talked separately to both Kennedy and Diane Baker when I worked the Summer job at Frank's gas station alongside my old man. They were customers. She was flirting at me like a mystery woman, driving a white Porche. But I didn't make any connection to anything by those separate encounters. It's like "Peg, It will come back to you...".

Less than 24 hours to go! When I get that computer back I am going to rip this board a new asshole! Well, maybe not. That's probably not the polite thing to do. Goddamn, boys, it's been nine days! It reminds me of when the family TV had to go into the shop and we had to make do with the tiny black and white. But I'm finally going to have a solid state drive and a drip-drop more RAM. At the very least, I've really put the iPods dictation software through its paces. This whole post was pretty much me yabbering into a microphone. Take a letter, Maria!

angel eyes, you so crazy.

the year, my good man, is 2016. when something breaks, you're supposed to throw it out the window and buy a feature-enhanced replacement for less money!

Preach it, brother! It's a creepy disposable society that we live in. I like to think I'm doing my part. That's why there are two monitors, two laptops, at least two iPods, one iPhone and one Kindle in the spare room. It's my own private landfill. With carpeting! And no rats for 3 years running!

well, i just went through a new sich-ee-ay-shun here.

"outfoxies," a tactical platform-brawler (sort of a quake III arena in 2D thing), was listing in MAMEUIFX as missing the small file "c75.bin." this was odd, because i had just DL'd the latest ROM.

a google search turned up stuff like this. after which i found the file online, and tried placing it zipped in my ROMs folder as well as unzipped, in its own folder (like a CHD). neither of those two things worked, nor did a fresh clrmamepro scan. in the end, i had to rebuild the ROM myself, combining the c75.bin file with the original contents. huzzah!

apparently this is a namco / MAME issue, but i have no idea why this essential file wouldn't be in either the ROM or the namco BIOS collection. so i guess the upshot is-- for certain games (like namco), you might have to hunt down a missing file yourself. which would be yet another reason to use something like MAMEUIFX instead of vanilla MAME, because you can't do audits through the interface in vanilla MAME.

anyway, here are some shots from the game. it seems pretty interesting, but so far runs a bit slowly on my very average system.

hmm... my post "will not appear until a mod approves it?"

this is a new twist.

EDIT: thanks, jon!

Sorry about that Ike, this has happened about 3 times since the upgrade to Users that have had more than 2 posts. It's supposed to kick in on certain keywords for Users who only have less than 2 posts, I have no idea why it happened but I don't think it's needed much right now due to a replacement spam program that was added a few months ago, so I've disabled it.
