good call, steve! ...as i love avocados indeed. i call them nature's butter, you know. and making almond milk from scratch is something i've never tried, altho it's certainly a lot easier than making soy milk (or tofu) from scratch (ugh, effort). a lot of food science ppl are high on coconut milk, too... cool.


re: lettuce ask a question,
i wonder where the nutrients are coming from on that hydroponics thing? that is, a problem with growing produce today is that most soils aren't as rich as they used to be, leading to fruits and veggies that aren't as nutritious as formerly. but maybe they are sprinkling fish compost or something to the lettuce to compensate. they do specifically say "nutritious," i see.

I agree hydroponics is only a part solution with perhaps diminishing returns. I believe aquaponics is the more ideal solution feeding the fish and/or shellfish/crustaceans to enrich the waters with their waste, whilst the plants filter the water and feed from their waste. I also also believe artificial lighting is only something to be considered to enhance a well set up glass house type environment.

Ah the dream a fine aquaponics farm, with black bream, yabbies and many varied fruit and vegetables...

hmm. i'm not clear at all on the differences between hydroponics and aquaponics. verbally they're pretty much the same, so that's why i ask.


oi steve mate, how much space do you have to work with these days? i feel like you could do something nice as is, if i may say so.

Aquaponics is a symbiotic system, you feed the fish, the fish water is filtered of the waste, excessive salts/nutrients by the plants and recycled to the fish ponds. Thus the produce is fish and vegetable with next to no waste, of course it's a fine balancing act, none the less totally doable, with enough thought and initial resources.

I think aquaponic farming has sea life swimming about below and plants growing in the water above. All in one tank. I Heard Talapia are a good choice for aquaponics and can thrive on one gallon of water per each fish. I like Talapia,white, firm and well behaved in the frying pan(But I remember these stories in links below). thx for the heads-up about tilapia. i definitely don't want to eat anything from china... altho tilapia and shrimp are the primary foods in the ceviche i often have at the mexican place. i hope he can tell me where he gets it from... hmm.
