The one that gives you a gumball
I saw a 7 didgit ROM available for ASM, so I thought I'd do a little updating. You can see I started to add an edge on the plastics and I also am adding new posts at the moment. I am going with red posts, because I had too many little black dots rendering on the white or or grey or silver posts I tried and on the red, they don't show up as much. I kind of like the red anyway and I'm not a purest. I added new wood cabinet sides and a new lockbar so far. I kind of like the cabinet, even it is a little bold.

Lookin' good, yes this table really needs that 7th digit, ever looked into separating the vpinmame display and substituting with your own tailor made displays that could look even more venomous. The wood looks great and the transparent plastic edges you add always liked those, still a more subtle shade of grey for the edges I feel would be sweeter, like it bob and yes it's a great table even with those double flippers you hate. :p

btw you been watching The latest Spectacular Spiderman toons, top stuff I reckon. :)

Oh and those hexagonal nuts are just plain wrong, in my artistic opinion. :p

Great news Bob....one thing you might want to try is to "smart sharpen" the playfield on PhotoShop.

Or use "unsharp mask" with the value or 22-33 and see how much better the playfield looks ingame....!!

I don't think I can sharpen the playfield anymore than I have, without losing the clarity. It is really closeup at the moment, probably too close for people that use widescreen monitors with a stretched playfield, but a monitor at a 4/3 resolution should look pretty good.

Steve, I'm not sure which edges you mean to make more grey, the wood edges or the rails. I used such a dark wood on the table to blend into the dark brown color at the top, that I almost have to keep that shade to make everything blend together.

Here's the pic I used to lift the cabinet from. I'd like to try some lighting efeects if I can make them look right.

Do you mean they look bad or that they shouldn't be there..... I could put real hex nuts with backdrop reels, but those things don't work yet in VP9.

Looking very good Bob! :)

Thanks Marv!

BTW, with the new VP9, you can export bitmaps and jpgs from the image manager, so if anyone wants to export the playfield image to try and make it better, give it a shot. I didn't have much of a closeup pic to start with and I don't want to start over, but a sharper image that still looks clear would be nice.

You can also export sounds from the sound manager in VP9, so if anyone likes any sound they hear in any table, it's a simple task to lift it and put it in another table.

I wonder if that addition should change the community rules about using other peoples graphics or sounds. I wonder if the community even has many rules left, since no one has much of a guidelines posted anymore with VPF gone. It seems to be more of an unauthorized mods not allowed and that's about it.

I still can't believe that people are happy with the new nudge in VP9, it's the same as FP, which was the main reason I didn't like FP.

Where in the hell is PD.... I can't believe he gave this shit up. I guess he couldn't take playing second fiddle to JP.

PD's feel the most authentic to me, but I love the different styles of all the different table makers. His version of Spectrum cannot be matched

you know the williams pins I used to work on used to have little white, barrel-shaped rubbers instead of hex caps over the posts. perhaps you could try that? they were great for stripping a playfield down, just grab and pull! course every now and then they'd pop off from excessive slamming and roll around eventually getting stuck somewhere, (usually by a drop target hole or a lane trigger slot)

Well I'll be it does have hexagonal nuts, mind you those are round headed hexagonal nuts, maybe you could use little decals for those, I know you just love decals. :) Though do decals still clash with drop wall effects in VP9?

The table looks nice Bob. :)

Where is the Spider-man backglass image for the backdrop? Is it included as an alternate backdrop?

I sharpened the pf with Photoshop...and you're right Bob...it doesn't make much difference at all....the playfield is "cartoonish" and "smooth" in colors and perhaps it should be left that way...!!

However PS' "unsharp mask" option is very smart sharpening tool...you can set the exact sharpening percentage....I use that a lot.

Kristian, I don't what it's called, but the next time you load an image into photoshop, press CTRL L on the keyboard and a menu box will appear and play with the sliders..... It's the easiest way I know to get the best possible looking image.

I was contacted by a guy who is going to get me a pic of a NOS (new old stock, I had to look it up) Amazing Spider-man playfield pic. That would be awesome. He was surprised to see the 7 digit ROM released, since it still has problems on real tables and he is one of the testers. Sounds cool to me!

These 7-digit roms are a real blessing...and they have given a new life to MANY tables...!!

I wish we could get more of them....all those 6-digit early SS Williams tables could definitely use them.

Here it is, untouched by me at the moment!! This is the highest resolution his camera will go, but I think it's a great pic!! I'm posting it here in case I disappear or lose it or screw it up while trying to fix it. :) He also said he had a set of NOS Spider-man plastics that he would look for and take a pic of them for me. Great guy, he's a forum lurker and is into real gottlieb machines.

I will be sharpening up the colors and whatever else I can do to make it a better image, but if anyone wants to clean the picture up and post it, I will use it if they do a better job then I can do.

Even though the stripped playfield looks cool, on further review, I think the pic I have in the table shows Spidey and the other figures in a better quality. I can't make the new pic look as nice or as smooth. I mean my old pic has trash everywhere that doesn't show on a VP table, but overall I think it looks better for a 4/3 monitor resolution table. I know the guys with cabinets would see the crap on the playfield, but I don't.

Here's the palyfield I currently have in the table, notice how spidey seems to have more clarity. Maybe someone can make the new image look as clear, I tried and I can't make it more clear then the one I already have in the table.

Old pic looks better Bob...absolutely nothing wrong with it.

New picture has more noise...!!

I received the plastics pics, they look great and I asked him if he'd try to take an upper playfield and a lower playfield pic and I could combine them if they are of higher quality focus.

BTW, I posted these pics to share the resources as I assume a few people would like to have them.

Now, I have merged them together and have been smoothing pixels for 3 hours, so I'm off to visit my grandkids. Here is what it looks like so far. :) I also got the measurements from him, so the playfield should be proportionately correct also.

EDIT - I removed the image and updated it below.

what's the difference between a 7-digit rom and 6-digit roms? Would a 7-digit rom be the default one used if it is downloaded with other digit roms for the same table?

The only difference for this table is one has a 7th digit, so the score doesn't start over at 1 million, this allows an accurate High Score to be saved. The default Rom for a VPM table would be the ROM version that the table creator decided to default to. For example, in this Amazing Spider-man table, there is a line of code where I include the ROM name, in the line below, it would be the 7 digit ROM that I used, if you change that to the name of the 6 digit ROM, then the 6 digit ROM would be used. Some authors create a menu box at the start to choose the ROM of your choice when there are multiple ROMs available.

Const cGameName = "spiderm7" ' PinMAME short name

Updated Playfield pic below....

Now if I could only use a pic higher than 1024 pixels in VP. What's the deal with that? I can load them, but I get a vanishing image at the lower playfield area. Is this an ATI bug or is this something that was never fixed in the new versions of VP, including VP9?

Just curious, have you seen JPs Spectrum already?

He used the same source material that i gave to PD back then, and while PDs looked fabulous at the time, JPs (at least in my opinion) definitely looks a whole lot better. (I had a small (very small) part in creating it and i think its really become a fine table.)

[P.S.: Bob, if you dont want the picture in this thread just tell me and i remove it,...]
