Just in case anyone has been wondering where that annoying damn Aussie has been...Well I've been in hospital. Had a bit of a fall, crashed my bicycle whilst going a bit too fast around a corner, 30kph or so. Dislocated my right ankle and broke 3 bones, my foot was 90 degrees right of where it should be.

I had to be taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital that could deal with it, Bunbury, 100kms away. They put me under and straightened the ankle, but I had to stay in a hospital bed for 10 days for the swelling to go down before they could operated on the broken bones.

The operation was a complicated one and went well by all accounts. I was in theatre for two and a half hours. So now I have 9 screws and a metal plate holding it altogether and apparently they stay in.

Got to say it was not much fun and I'll be laid up for at least a couple of months yet. I'm thinking I'll be slowing down for those corners from now on.

First time I've ever broken a bone and I still can't believe it happened, I even had steel capped safety boots on at the time, laced above and around the ankle, seems I'm not as indestructible as I imagined, dammit!

Sorry to hear that Steve. Do you have that universal health care?

This would be a good time to finish your Turtle's table. :)

Jeezum Crow, Steve! That's a hell of a bang-up! Best of luck healing as fast as possible. Hope it doesn't ruin your golf swing!

That's a drag Steve. I broke my right foot in 2005. It was weird how it happened.
I was sitting crossed-legged on the floor and got up all wrong and my foot twisted with a loud POP sound. The next thing I knew, the foot was numb and bent on the outer arch, but damn, it sure hurt to use it.

Did you hit a stone and have it kick out from under the wheel? I had that happen once riding straight down the street and next thing I knew, I was laying flat on the street on my chest looking up at the wheels of a Chevy whizzing past me within 12 inches of my face in the opposite lane of travel. I then looked over my shoulder behind me, still laying there, to see a VW Bug coming up fast. It drove around me and it didn't stop either.

Geez,oh man, I sincerely hope you get better...don't care whether you're an Aussie or not! :) Remember only The Shadow is indestructible. Yeah what about that turtles table this might give you more time to sit down and finish it! :)

No insurance at all Bob, let alone universal insurance, like what is that are you covered even off planet? :) Here you're lucky if you're covered if you leave the state let alone the nation or going overseas.

Still it shouldn't be too bad. unlike the bad ol' U S of A our government covers about 70% of all medical expenses and being a low income earner I get further concessions. ;)

Sleepy I've no idea as to what really happened, it was just getting on dark, though I suspect I hit something on the road before the spill because I've taken that corner many a time at similar speeds in the past, just bad luck and a bit of bad judgement on my part I suppose.

So that's 2 votes for finishing my TMNT table, well I'll have go and dig the old layout out and see if I can remember how to do it. :)

Get well soon Steve.

A real shitter and no mistake.

:(

...so it had nothing to do with it being schoolies week ;)

Sorry to hear about your busted ankle

Actually TMFP or is it Pete, either way it happened just before the schoolies and I got out just after it finished, so not related to that at all. That said I was under the influence of substances mostly legal, though my levels were a bit high, none the less it's not something I've has a problem with in the past. As they say sometimes shit just happens and this was that kind of shit. :p

Ouch, hope everything heals up well.

At least you are still here, a guy on an email list I subscribe to was going around a corner on his bike a few weeks ago, fell and hit his head, instant brain death... Makes me think about wearing a helmet when riding my horse, but then I'd probably fall off and break my neck...

Yeah you're damned if you do and damned if you don't! :)

Did a passerby call the ambulance or did you have to search for a local phone?

Did a passerby call the ambulance or did you have to search for a local phone?

After it happened I found myself in the middle of the road intersection laid out next to my bike, so I had to drag myself and the bike off the road with my one good leg a bit at a time.

As I was almost off the road a car came past and stopped with a few young blokes on board and they were good enough to carry me and my bike into the car and take me home, which was great from there the ambulance was called. So that saved me a lot of grief, thanks to the crew that stopped and helped me out.

Yeah, that's always rough in dealing with the details.
I'm glad there were good people to help out.

Look . . .I've told ya a million times before how to take that bend - but you just won't fuckin' listen willya . . .??

Ride toward the apex, lean left and drop into second gear . . .bloody simple.

But no . . .I know more than Shadow . . .yadda yadda . . .

. . .well not so smart now ya dozy galah, huh . . .

. . .snap, crackle, pop  there goes me bastard ankle :salut:

And . . .stop wearin' that stupid frigging hat . . .:awaken:

AH the hat thing, yeah well, I'd not wear it at all if it were not required by law around these 'ere parts, bloody Nanny State. It's a nice easy $100 fine for the revenue police.

That said it did save me once, whilst getting home a bit late in the dark. Hit a pedestrian in the middle of the road, my thinking at the time, no traffic or lights in the distance so rather then risk running someone down on the pathway, I'd ride down the middle of the road, can't win sometimes. I did manage to brake at the last moment and we both went on our way, though I did take a chunk out the side of the ol' helmet and I bet he had some nice bruises the next day as I did.

Second gear, you're joking, this thing has 24 gears and I rarely use the first 3 gears unless riding up a serious hill, still I'll definately be taking it a lot easier around them corners in the future.

Thanks for the kind words. :p

Just as an update, I've had my stitches out as they had to slice my leg open either side to put all the metal work in there, you know a plate and 9 or so screws. No infection, so that's good and I got a new cast put on. It's not really given me any pain so I think that a good sign and I can wiggle my toes just fine. Go back on the 13th to have that cast taken off and leg x-rayed again, so I'll find out then I guess.

All that metalwork might be bad news, mate . . .

. . .I mean, don't go near any home appliance stores . . .

. . .not only will the impact not do yer leg any good, but they'll think you've found a foolproof way to shoplift . . .

The damp in prison will fuck yer leg good and proper as well . . .:help:

On the brighter side . . .you should be pointing North most of the time . . .

You'll set off every metal detector too.... I think they shout, "Damn terrorist!" right before they shoot you. :)

Hell, it's not the metal detector that would bother me.
It would be the idiot guard patting me down trying to find the gun...

Sorry to hear about your foot mate , hope all goes well with the healing process
and your back on your 2 feet in no time :D

What was the food like in the Bunbury hospital? A friend of mine in Dalyellup has
to go in for a few days next month :o

Happy healing ,

Matt :)

BTW I had to pay for the ambulance ride @ $700 or so, no other costs at all. Not sure if that applies these days, as for the food well it was food nothing more or less, rather bland.

Six years on I have new bike and still ride, to be sure on occasion it does and has given me some feedback, that said it's no issue at all really I can hop or stand on that leg in the shower as needs be, thus at 52 years of vintage I may survive a few more years yet, though only the Shadow knows!

Then again maybe it's the vegemite! :)

And me, I was thinking OH NO!! NOT AGAIN??

"the foot that keeps breaking itself"... we're almost in meme country.

Yeah, nah just an update report.

Though I did break my back since then, damn the morning after was like oh, this is a bit of problem took 30 minutes to slowly slide on some undies, everyone sleeps as nature intended yes?

Actually just a broken wing lateral on my L3, though still that was a month or so I was laid up, x-rayed and no they don't operate, just let the bone heal and grow back which it has. Hit a bollard in the middle of a pathway, put there to stop idiot car drivers doing a short cut, it no longer is there and was removed, the bollard or pole that is not my spine I still have plenty of backbone maybe even more then I used to have.
