Please do not post in spam threads. It makes it a lot harder to delete threads and spam bots, as we have to go through every post these morons put stuff in, and we may accidentally delete you as well. Just leave it alone, usually we get them here pretty fast anyway.
Thanks

Sorry. I did post in one recently.

But based on a pattern of recent posts I've seen here, some of the spammers seem to be from Russia's 'divide & conquer'-lite division of cyberwarfare. Those would be the ones who aren't trying to sell you anything or push malware, but to create and manipulate discussions and hence, public opinion. It's been in the news, especially as US midterms come, and scarily enough, it's been working.

Anyway, I wonder if adding a captcha to the new acct signups would slow them down. vB probably has some up-to-date tools you all could hack in or something.

maybe. I did suggest a question and answer as part of the signup, maybe it's too easy, or they are getting in some other way. Still, very rarely it happens now since changes were made.

Had 2 more today. apparently these bots are coping other threads and then come back to post their crap. Don't post in those either please, tricky to remove without affecting other posts and their members. We usually get them fast enough.

Which is why I linked the original threads a couple times, recently. Because you still seemed underinformed about that particular angle of theirs. So now you see how that works. Good.

Now, I'm not exactly sure what the aim of the master bot-runner(s) is, but from their end it's undoubtedly an almost zero-effort thing, meaning we can expect it relentlessly. Actually, come to think of it, I do recall reading that a big part of the Russian troll-bot army's aim is to test vulnerabilities across a wide gamut of online sites. This undoubtedly ranges from almost meaningless sites for their purposes (like us) to critical sites, such as the US & Canadian power grid front-doors and back-doors. Possibly even *more* critical sites, such as nuclear / missile / deep govt sites. If that's not a reason to be concerned, I don't know what is.

Because, yeah-- apparently the foreign hackers have found some of the bot feedback highly useful, and have repeatedly demonstrated that they can indeed penetrate security across a number of such critical sites.

And again, from what I've read, the security countermeasures our govts and private institutions have been pursuing up til now have been chronically, pathetically inadequate, in general. And likely it's as worse as ever in the US, given the near-complete total incompetence of the current admin.

Shiva, I honestly didn't even know you were still helping with the site. Given how easily you've allowed these bots to create new accts, I'd thought you were pretty much long gone.

Let's say that for this particular issue, I'm reluctantly willing to play the annoying a-hole role, i.e. the person willing to remind you that you're far better off beefing up your new acct security model rather than complaining about my thread linking.

Thanks, mate.
