Do you dare the Windows 10?

Well shit.
My rummy computer is lagging on the USB MIDI yolk with sometimes mucho delay, so I am suspecting it is the OEM installation. But you know, my CD of Windows will not boot to install to a second blank HD. I am currently looking to install a bootable setup on that extra drive to then install a fresh copy to then test the USB MIDI interface.
Just to see if the lag will be vanquished. Else I need more memory, but the system says that I have memory to spare. ???

So yes. My system still qualifies for the beta, but I'll be damned if I install it over my floggy curent OS setup. Microsoft warns users that there is No Rollback or recovery of your former OS system after installing the Windows 10 beta, which will then require a reinstall from the installation disk and validation in order to restore the former OS (but you're on your own about reinstalling the third party drivers and programs!!!).
They also say that Windows 10 Will Be Buggy and that it will Not Allow Playback of DVD/Blu-Ray Video. It will Uninstall/disallow Media Player and Media Center.

The word is, they don't want beta testers just watching movies.
My theory is, they don't want to give away Windows for free to people who want to play "Titanfall PC" from a torrent download. And of course, movies and DirectX games are a main selling point for new Windows versions.

"Windows Update" will be enabled by default in this Windows 10 beta tryout, and your system and your usage will be exposed to Microsoft. Wide open. That's the devil's bargain.

And of course, how to get it installed on that blank spare drive???

??????????

I think you're probably a lot more knowlegeable than me on this subject, but I'll throw this out there anyways: I've used a USB Midi interface with my PC's to connect my Yamaha midi keyboard and have always had to adjust the latency in my recording software to correct lagging/delays in key presses. There's always been a "sweet spot" that's corrected it, even in an old pentium II with 386 ram that I used for a long time for making music.

Thanks Shooby! :)
Yeah, I'm battling old system Compaq/Intel and Music Creator 6 latency issues.
There I am pretty sure I need more memory. Heck, the program itself is a mere 5 Gigabytes in size, mostly due to .sfz and virtual instruments voices, and the Proteus VX VST/standalone for the same reason. Sample size.

Weird thing is, I bought the download with the Cakewalk Examples Pack. It had two "Steinway" piano voices and several other virtual instruments in the Cakewalk Sound Center. But when I went to the Digital Sound Factory site and downloaded/installed all of their free example packs, including the Proteus VX, the "Steinways" and several other voices vanished from the available CSC selection list. Hmm...
So I tried reinstalling the add-on pack that came with MC6, but no luck at all.

That download is available for XP and Vista for $20. Not bad, but I hate to think that the other packs contain some kind of sniff and delete function..yeah. PO'd.
Cakewalk support says the "Steinway Grand" voices aren't included in that version (hell, I only have Pizzicato for solo violin, viola, cello and string bass, though I think a straight string voice was also there before "the Steinway hoodoo struck", but the online info for the included pack says they might be, and I still have a Steinway Icon .bmp in the MC6 Image folder. Why would that be there if it was never installed?

But it's still worthwhile for some fun. And yep. My creakt Yamaha PSR260 (basic starter kb), but I'm using it for a controller. The USB yolk is the Yamaha UX16.

This is the official Windows Tech Preview site with the information about signing up for the beta. The music in the video that contains the sign up/download information is riffing on U2/"With or Without You".
Wonder what that's about, huh?

Well, I decided to hack one of my junk computers for a DVD burner. Got that, and a stack of 70+ blank DVDs that I bought on the cheap at the Circuit City Out-of-Business sale a thousand years ago, ready to burn...but they're DVD-Rs. That burner blew up awhile ago..and the one I hacked out last night is a DVD+R.
They don't mix as burners, though they will play the other's prerecorded medium...sometimes.

So I'm off to Frys in a little while to pick up a spindle of DVD+Rs...and cancel the preorder for DVD-Rs that I made for notr paying attention...

The drive works, so now I have full use of the Bart PE boot disk for NTFS that I burned back when that other DVD-R drive was playing nice before I tore it to shreds trying to get it to work. The IDEs are vanishing fast out there.

Found out something interesting regarding DOS and Win 98. Apparently there is a command that you can insert in the "system.ini" file under the "386 enh" section to allow MS-DOS or Win 98 to run on a system with 1 Gb. system RAM without limiting or capping the RAM. The command is:

PageOverCommit=1

Apparently the DOS/9x memory manager uses scalars to map the RAM. I read that the "1" is a multiplier. The number can run up to 20, but what happens with extra memory is, the DOS/Win9x mem manager multiplies its scale of the addresses and then "runs out of memory for the OS and for other programs", even though there is 1 Gb. available. The word is, setting PageOver to "1" stops the mem manager from multiplying.

This may not solve the Win 98 problems of video cards with vram greater than 256 Mb. The drivers, else Windows, refuse to see the sense of it, and larger VRAM video cards will not install. Else they run on the default VGA driver @8 Bits w/16 colors and no fun allowed.

So I'm off to burn a disk and get on Windows 10...On a Spare Junk IDE HD.

EDIT: Not sure, but I am thinking that in MS-DOS the file of interest might be the CONFIG.SYS file. I can't remember offhand if there is even a "system.ini" file in DOS. I am thinking there is only the CONFIG.SYS version there.

Maybe I'll try FREEDOS (32 bit).

I Must Be Stone Blind!
Help me if you can determine the exact System Requirements from the following page for this Windows Technical Preview (Win 10). Fuckin' Stupid...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-faq#faq=tab1

I'll tell you what. I booted the installation DVD that I burned and I saw the darkness.
Indeed. Towards the right side of the screen I saw the near distant blue Window with four panes in the darkness (the install start up screen).
And then I was informed that Windows 10 Tech Preview is not available for systems running Vista or XP. Huh. Check out that page. Are you like me, and going blind too?

How about this one?

http://www.pinballnirvana.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=6400&stc=1&d=1412793204

I was informed that this Technical Preview is only available for valid users of Windows 7 or 8 / 8.1. I mean what gives? Could be it's buggy.

Has anyone else installed it on XP or Vista?

EDIT. Heh. Maybe that copy of Vista wasn't legit....

Well now I don't know.
The junk computer that I tried installing Win 10 on blew up.
Have to find another workaround...

i still need to replace my old gamecard port MIDI interface to get my keyboards online again. i guess USB's the way to go, huh? that problem doesn't sound too promising. :/

couple months ago i even bought an ableton mixer and focusrite scarlett2 to record from mic and guitar and still don't really have them sussed. yea, i should get that stuff taken care of first, nvm.

still really jazzed at the clever ports that accept both patch cord and mic plug. :)

From the Direct Links page that tii provided in his first post:

"Overall, this is clearly worth a try if you are a Windows aficionado, so have a look at the system requirements below to see if your PC can handle it and then go download Windows 10 Preview using the direct links.

• Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
• RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB)
• Free hard disk space: 16 GB
• Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
• A Microsoft account and Internet access
• The Windows 10 Technical Preview can be installed on PCs meeting system requirementsrunning Windows 7 or newer"

Hah! Won't be sticking my toes in that water. I'm going to see how long Malwarebytes and nod32 can keep my XP alive. <ins data-adsbygoogle-status="done" class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:15px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2364887827571271" data-ad-slot="4402165835"><ins id="aswift_1_expand" style="display:inline-table;border:none;height:15px;margin:0;padding:0;position:relative;visibility:visible;width:468px;background-color:transparent"><ins id="aswift_1_anchor" style="display:block;border:none;height:15px;margin:0;padding:0;position:relative;visibility:visible;width:468px;background-color:transparent"></ins></ins></ins>

Yea GS, that's what I was talking about. The Softpedia page makes the Win 7 statement, but the offical Microsoft page actually talks about installing on a Vista system. But the disc that I burned from the MS link ISO disagrees.

And something else. Last night I went to the MS site, downloaded their "Windows 7 System Compatibility Advisor" app, ran it on my main system, and it claims that my main system is Win 7 compatible. But I swapped out the hard drive and ran the Win 10 disc from the ROM drive and it comes back Nada with errors. My current main system is an XP Compaq. It is not Vista compatible, according to HP Compaq MFG.

Some folks these days think nothing about having we the people buy it anyway and when it doesn't work, just toss it in the trash and get another one. Just get another computer...just get another car...just get another house...

These people are out of touch with the reality that the rest of us live every day, and I don't buy disposable. I buy things to use, take care of, and last as long as they can, not because the money's tight, but because that is quality dependability.
It ain't gonna break in my hand when I need it for something.

EDIT: DON'T. I REPEAT. DON"T TRY THIS VIRTUAL MACHINE INSTALLATION TRICK ON ANY COMPUTER THAT YOU MEAN TO KEEP!!
THE AUTHOR OF THIS ARTICLE REPORTED THAT THE TECH PREVIEW STEPPED OUTSIDE OF THE VM SANDBOX and OVERWROTE SYSTEM FILES ON THE MAIN OS!!!
SO DON"T DO THIS!!

There is an article today about how to install and run Win 10 as a Virtual Machine-VM. I would recommend this option because it won't (It Shouldn't) wipe your OS. It will instead run it as a separate installation in a sandbox, but again, I doubt that this would work when the Win 10 doesn't like the hardware to begin with. If you are unsure, then Backup your current system First, and if you are unsure about how to backup your system, then don't go there. Note: System Restore will not work after installing the preview directly, and may not work when using the VM install option because the preview is expected to be buggy. It may damage your OS systems due to that fact.

For those who have a brand new or late model Windows 7 or Windows 8 or a Brand New Windows 8.1 system and wish to try The Windows Technical Preview using the VM option, here's the article.
I assume Zero Responsibility in the event of catastrophe stemming from the use of this software. In the event of damage to your system, heh.
Just buy another one! :)

Well...
You can't install it on an old clunker, and from what I can find on it,
the Tech Preview requires a CPU newer than Pentium 4 which shouldn't be too hard to scrape up. P4 is old.
But the Tech Preview has the same CPU requirements as does Windows 8 / 8.1. This:

As I've stated in A BIG EDIT ABOVE...

EDIT: DON'T. I REPEAT. DON'T TRY THE VIRTUAL MACHINE INSTALLATION TRICK ON ANY COMPUTER THAT YOU MEAN TO KEEP!!
THE AUTHOR OF THE ARTICLE WHO SUGGESTED USING A VIRTUAL MACHINE TO INSTALL THE TECH PREVIEW ON ANY CURRENT MAIN SYSTEM SO THAT YOU CAN TRY IT WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MAIN OS HAS RECENTLY REPORTED THAT THE TECH PREVIEW STEPPED OUTSIDE OF THE VM SANDBOX, VICIOUSLY ATTACKING THE MAILMAN,
and THE DAMNED DOG THEN OVERWROTE SYSTEM FILES WHICH BELONGED TO THE MAIN OS!!! JUST AS I SUSPECTED IT MIGHT.
SO DON"T DO THIS!!

I believe the author is not being truthful. It probably wiped everything.

The Microsoft Technical Preview setup package is designed to provide a clean install.
Which is exactly why I attempted to install it on a Vista system.
