Encyclopaedia Britannica to End Print Book Edition

End of an era, Mr. Gutenberg. My family bought Grolier's Book of Knowledge and American People's Encyclopedia in 1966, the latter being superior in practicality to the Britannica version which is/was often too technical for the common child to depend on in matters of producing personal dependable weapons of mass destruction.

With the APE series from 1966, I can do it!

I like books a lot. I find it really sad that that there won't be a print version anymore.

damn am I the only holdout against electronic books? I own over two hundred paperbacks and love reading them still!

For me it's a resource issue. I find it easier to read a hard copy too.

The options go beyond resources, and e-copy vs hard copy, but into not even having to read, but just listen, and more so in the short rest of the future. Not that it is preferred, but because that's the way it is.

i hate ebooks because the reading experience is just not the same. i love traditional books because not only are they a pleasure to read, but they appeal to the collector in me.

i also hate traditional books because i've had to move a lot in my life, and lugging them around is a total PITA. i love ebooks because i can fit the entire library of congress (or thereabouts) in a tiny jump drive, which goes wherever i go as long as i have a pocket.

the missing element is a nice, book-sized device to read the ebooks on, and that i have now.

And me, you know, I am still reading The Internet on a 15" monitor,
but for e-books and The Net, I am dying for a nice 60" HDTV where I can read the fine print from across the room in cream fonts with black backdrop.

I remember when we were told Not to sit closer than 3 Ft. from a t.v. set while viewing. I wonder what the rule is for 15" computer monitors? My gut feeling is, I'll go with the HDTV, along with my sore eyes.
