ok so ive had this flying carpet em for a few months now and after messing with it i think im understanding ems a lot more. my problem now is the ball count unit is popping fuse. its the knocker leaf switch about the "replay relay lockin" leaf switch when the arm goes down. my problem now is i dont know where to go from here. any help is greatly appriciated. id like to be able to play this machine

the leaf switch fish paper is prob. torn off. allowing the arm that is powered with the yellow common wires to touch the blade part of leaf switch. use electric tape or heat shrink tubing to insulate the arm from shorting out on the switch. this is easier that replacing the fish paper in the leaf switch.

ive tried insulating the arm. its the actual switch that shorts out the fuse. when the switch closes, by hand or by the arm it shorts out. does not look like anything is shorting with the actual switches possibly further down the line, i just dont know where to look

you said that the knocker leaf switch is whats blowing the fuse. this switch is usually on the credit unit not the ball count unit. does the knocker coil look burnt? is the knocker still in the machine? sometimes when the knocker goes bad its removed from the machine and the wires are tied together. if this is the case the wires must be separated as this will be a short and blow the fuse. a pic of the knocker and the leaf switch in question might be helpful.

OK so I'm dumb and the knocker coil is bad, my next question is, what does it actually do?

the knocker is a sound making device that makes a knock sound when a replay or a match is scored.

You can disconnect the bad coil and continue to play the machine until you get a replacement coil. All that thing does is make that knocking sound. It has no other function.

yea its one step closer i disconnected the common wire, so at least now it stops blowing the fuse. now its to get the game to start. i can add a coin to make it count up on the ball count unit inside of the backglass, but nothing further. push reset and it counts down but then doesnt do anything else.

I was thinking this was a recent problem but it sounds like you have yet to play any games on this machine. Does any relay pull in when you hit the button? Have you tried closing the reset relay by hand? Is the game over light lit?

It looks like a fun machinehttp://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=899&picno=16129&zoom=1I hope you get it going ...C_S

never been able to play the game completely. this is my first pin and i recieved it like this. i see no game over light on the game when it is powerd on. closing the relay by hand doesnt seem to be doing anything (if im pushing correctly. its in the entire reset bank. which if there is a credit in the ball cound unit pushing the grey (once red) button at the coin door it take the credit away and resets the bank but nothing else

I think you will find a reset relay in the cabinet at right side of motor board. Also a game over and tilt relay. A coin relay circuit ,I think I will never understand. There may be a 'hold' relay that stays pulled in during play. I'm not an expert and usually figuring many a thing out as I go. Gottlieb's legacy holders have made it impossible to share manuals and schematics(See: Greedy Pricks)So I can't look at any diagrams. It sounds a bit obvious but did you test all fuses for continuity and voltage drop across the energized fuses? I think I saw some fuses underside the playfield. Check the game over light bulb. That circuit should send power to game over lamp when the game is "relaxed" between plays. The game over relay initiates the reset sequence when credit button is pressed. I believe it sends power to reset relay. The machine will then continue to reset untill things like score reels at zero positions, reset bank completed, ball counter at start position, score motor at home position...ball in shooter lane?....
PS>>>The ball counter has to be at game over position{#'6'} to initiate the game over state.

PPS>>> Here's where schematics get confusing...AH, even more confusing?...A pinball schematic shows the state of things with the game powered on, reset completed AND in the ready to play ball #1 condition. This means normally open / closed contacts are shown at their game started position. The game over light is a good example of this. It will be drawn as normally open contacts(N.O.) because that circuit is off during game play. That set of contacts is held open by an energized relay coil on game over relay. When the last ball drains the game over relay de-energizes and that N.O. contact closes, sending power to the game over light. That is just how they(and you know who they are?) do things...C_S

sorry i got busy and couldnt get back right away, yes i checked for cont between every fuse and voltage between them seems fine. i replaced every light when i got the pin, but i might check to see if the socket is getting power. i have the schematic for it if it helps, ive figured out a lot so far, just dont know the next step from here
