This may be a Real Buster Bloodvessel. I don't have much to go on, else I Would Be Free.

I think this was a single from 1969. It may not have done well at the time.
It was a country-soul-R & B fusion, very folk-like. Mostly folk. Black. Like a "Porgy and Bess" tune. Easy.
I seem to remember the singer as a man maybe singing to his woman.
The identifying feature is that the later tune, "A Long December" by Counting Crows uses either the same intro guitar riff or very close, but in this mystery tune, the riff is vocalized as a verse line, at the end of the line, by the singer as a pleasant folksy rasp. As a raspy wince.
Like a fine peach tea cigarillo.

I've heard it on the local golden oldies station, so it isn't totally forgotten.

Well wrong answer I know, that's for sure....still it was 69. ;)

Hey, that's Ray Charles. Very soulful blues.
But you are right. Wrong answer. I gotta love it though.

i still play the game on MAME. the music is primitive as can be, but fun and rather educational.

That Bally/Sente version is a bitch. I've never gotten more than one level.
Aren't we supposed to win some kind of money for that?

Btw, I installed Norton Security as an add-on for a Adobe Flash plugin.
Norton seems to think that MAME32 is 'a high risk malware', though Norton doesn't quarantine it without consent. Hell no, Norton.
Do you suppose Norton is trying to protect against 'assumed piracy' by falsely labeling MAME32 as 'a malware'?

ARRGH!

Is there no hope?

Alright Mr. DJ. I Googled up a list of singles from 1969 and no luck. So I tried 1970. I burned my eyes.
I was a bit off. It's "Patches" by Clarence Carter (1970).
Man, I'd Love to bend this up. Like "Everybody Wants to Rule Their World". Like Niles Rodgers and Chic piano. Like Ramsey Lewis.
Like "Grapevine" vs. Gladys. Like "Fast Car".

If this video plays a list, I think I prefer the second version. Else click the second URL link.

shit... i wasn't paying much attention when you first started this thread.

there are two apps that will recognise a song by humming. the one you want is midomi, for browser. the other one is for mobile, called "soundhound" if you ever get a smartphone, tablet or whatnot.

maybe that helps you in future. (sorry again)

re: name that tune,
the MAME game is definitely a bitch. you have to answer quickly and only miss about one song per stage, and even then it ends at three stages. not real good value for your hard-earned quarter. IIRC there are no operator controls to make it a better value, but there -is- a cheat to help you progress through the stages. biggest problem with the game (other than that) is that even by mid-80's standards the songs are very dated and rather limited in scope. if you're good with songs from the 40's and 50's then you'll be alright.

i also have a pretty nice game on android called "guess that song." main problem with that one is the opposite situation... the songs are mostly crapola from the late 90's and on.

to be fair, it's a hard game to get right for reasons like these. licensing / royalties is also quite the bitch. i remember a board game with videotape / DVD companion, but it never made it big i think.

Patches? You were looking for Patches? That one's easy! And it doesn't sound anything like that Counting Crows song. That's right... I listened to a Counting Crows song for you! Why, I oughta...
Anyway, you weren't thinking of Patches. You were really thinking of "Rainy Night in Georgia".

No, not that one, and not even "The Thrill is Gone" /B.B. King.
Not "Seven Rooms of Gloom", and not "Show Me" Joe Tex.

Oh Good God Spike! It is not "A Long December" You are correct.
Which means that I am on a new Name That Tune search.
And I totally ignored the 90's too...so many overcooked reruns of riffs from better songs, else more of my/their shit. Cameron and sinking ships...got a pennywhistle?

hey sleepy... may i ask... what are you hanging around for?

i mean, i get that you are part of a folks / hollywood process to milk your talents dry and leave you taking care of stray cats. which i respect a lot... i mean, i love animals in almost any form. but cats are so lovely.

meanwhile, someone like me owns a body that has been dying since the preteens (explanation if needed), but when a smart person su出暗暗是有doesthisandthat

Hey. I don't. They got money. They stalk. I spent two weeks at the shelter with one of them. I take a bus out of here for several days and get Cosby at the Laguna Beach stop, being some kind of guide while saying nothing.
They push. I don't.

Midomi failed me. This is what I gave it. I think it's from the 90's. Yes?
This is the tune that I was trying to compare to Patches. What the heck is it?

No, no, no... the #14, with the Mongolian Beef and fried rice. And toss in an order of crab rangoon, as well.

EDIT: As far as the above tune, color me stumped!

@sleepy,
that's not humming. i told you how to put your lips together and blow for midomi, didn't i?

but yeah, what a classic little piece. i want to say it's one of brian wilson's little piano snippets he was tossing off every other day, but you would have to be dr. eugene levy to remember that. are you in fact dr. eugene levy?

LANDY... sorry it's landy. i think you and bill were the ones who got me screwed up on that. assholes.

@bill,
urgh, i was falling asleep and diane's key hack kicked in. now she's back in TX and i'm still a lonely muvvlefluffler, so kindly piss off. i've got your mongolian beef right here, godammit.

probably hear it one of these days over the PA at the supermarket.
Until then, I guess I'll chill with a couple of vintage "Then Came Bronson" moments in history.

What... no delivery? I hate cold crab rangoon.
Man, Bronson! I think I first saw that when I was 12... started showing up late nights on one of the local channels. It was like watching a small-screen James Dean! To my admittedly limited perception of who James Dean was. Which, pretty much, was "the guy who beat up Thurston Howell in that movie and the dude what The Eagles were singing about."

Long time now. I"m surprised it isn't available on Hulu.

Well shit!

There was once a modern symphonic piece. I thought the name of it was "Symphony for a New World" by Paul DuCarr. Or "Music for a New World". It was often used on network t.v. in the 1950's and early 60's, particularly for news and broadcast journalism. It was austere with a memorable riff that has since found its way into pop and rock music. It had a striking fanfare opening of horns that played this riff.

But I cannot find it now. And it is Definitely Not Dvorak's "New World Symphony". Totally not that. Damn...Maybe I need to break out that stashed copy of Universal Studios' royalty-free "100 Public Domain Classical Pieces" for stock scores that one of the neighbors dropped in my Easter Basket! I'm thining it might be on that. Probably not.

Art which vanishes like Newsspeak hard copy in a furnace is very frustrating.
I'm gonna have to punk John Hurt over that shit...
