he's been out there 4 hot ass days now, the temp here
has been around 105 for the last week. i thought he was
one of my neighbors dogs, but apparently not as i left
a note on their door that he was locked out of the backyard
and then they just put a bit of food out in the alley for him,
while i've been getting him water everyday - i can't stand
to see him suffer in the Xtremeheat. so today i wrangled
him with a piece of rope and made him come over and sit inside the air cooled house.

he's just like Snuffy a pit bull/labrador mix with short hair.
i don't know what todo with him as i really can't afford
to take care of a dog proper. maybe he ran off from someone
nearby, but i havn't seen anybody or signs posted of a lost dog
and i certainly don't want to call animal control - he probably
wouldn't last a week there and even the SPCA can't hold onto
him forever....

well he's laying on my bed with his head on the pillow
soaking up some ac just like Snuffy - i can barely feed myself
right now(hard times) much less a dog - what todo????????????????????????

Hey, Snuffy stepped out on you and did his business.
Now you've found a friend.

I have the same problem with cats. Bopper was a skin and bones orange tabby, like a Garfield or Morris young one who was abandoned. I can tell because he was dying from starvation and all he could do was cry out to us humans for food. He also had an English vocabulary of several words. That pretty much says that he was a pet. Feral cats won't wait for people to feed them, and they will not talk in any human language. Dogs will often speak several words, but in a "voooowel" dog dialect since they cannot close their lips to speak.

Except Bopper was a sprayer, so he had to stay out, though I fed that friend of mine religiously. In Winter he shacked up with a fem in the crawlspace under a neighbor's warm bathtub. She got knocked up and it was the coldest Winter in L.A. in many years, rain and freeze, so I took her in and now I have 6 female cats.

Bopper disappeared at the same time that 5 stray cats vanished with two of them found dead (poisoned) after space blood low rider moved in upstairs and decided he was going to take care of his hatred of cats.

We are a pet-friendly apartment, but space blood can't read, so it was my fault for feeding them.

I would ask the neighbors directly about Snuffy Jr. because I would want to make sure that he is not on a sabbatical, but I would want to make sure that if he is a runaway, that the former owners are not abusing him.

Can you tell if he's been fixed? That would indicate that he might be a runaway (wouldn't you?) or an abandoned pet.

But for God's sakes, stay away from animal control. I had to drop off a couple of male cats to keep the population down around here and of course L.A. wants $35 per animal and it was still 'my fault'. L.A. is just too fancy for living things.

well i put up a sign in the yard

FOUND DOG
BROWN
PIT/LAB MIX

of course i will ask for a description
and identifying marks before i let
them see him.........:headscratch:

still got his balls.....:guitar:

Dogs are in demand in your area, eh?
Just don't let the kids try to take him away, like "Oh, I want that".

if they can't describe him before they see him,
no one is taking him - he has certain identifying marks

well i guess i better get down to the grocer
and get some O'l Roy.........................................

Have you given him a name? He is yours now.
I could send you a few bucks for dog food
if that would help.

Rick:(

no no :trippy:

thanks for the offer Rick,
another friend of mine dropped
by with a bag of chow, i think
we'll be alright for now....:colors:

OK. but the offer stands if you need help in the future.

Could you please post a pic of Him?

Rick

agree with rick... i love all kinds of animals and it always feels good to hear about a person who helps out an animal (or person) in need. if there's a paypal or mailing address for either of you, i second rick's offer to help...

I'll never forget Snuffy's pic with the sunglasses on.

Those were good times.

i have a @4-5yr old 80lb female german shepard that i got from the shelter.
she was there 2months in a cold weather concrete floor cage from january to february.
the shelters are full of animals from irresponsible owners that don't spay or neuter their animals.
the counties are spending millions every year to operate the shelters.
this is another drain on our tax money because of irresponsible owners.
now owners are dumping their animals on the street because of the bad economy and inflation.
shes a nice girl. she was dumped on the street.

Is it just me or I can foresee you'll keep it. I know I would because that's how human nature for normal people works. We get attached.

Even if I couldn't afford a 3rd "kid" ( i have 2 of my own :) ) pets have this strange attraction to them and when you noticed they just part of the family. As such, they should be taken care of just the same, especially dogs that just ask for some pats on the back in exchange of devote loyalty.

But if for ANY reason, you or anyone else can't afford to have one I'd say contact your local shelter and leave him there before it is "too late" (read you get attached to it).

PS: if you're given it a name, then it's already to late and your original question is a moot point :)

i have had her 1 1/2yr.
she has been difficult because she is untrained, does not mind well, no leash training, barks at neighbors for
no reason and so on.
everybody is a little afraid of her because of her aggresive german shepard attitude.
when i am in the front yard i tie her to a tree on a long leash.
if i let her off the leash she runs and i have to chase her down.
the harder i chase her the more she runs.
i can't catch her if she doesn't want to be caught.
i'm worried if she gets out she will run into the main street and get hit because she has no training.
most animals from the shelter are like that.
i have had german shepards before.
i have been working with her but she is very difficult.
she already had a name.
when the shelter takes in animals they need to give them a name, an ID# then put
them into the system.
my local shelters have a lot of animals.
maybe people are dumping the animals on the street because they feel they will have
a better chance of getting takin' in than the shelter.

I was answering Tii but yes, shelters here, especially after the pandemic got full pretty quickly and now with inflation is even worse because it's hard to keep ourselves going let alone having another mouth to feed.

I love german shepards.

You should get a puppy from a shelter. A full grown dog can have temperament issues. Puppies won't have a temperament established. From what I have seen, a breed really doesn't have a predetermined temperament. I know someone that has mostly pit bull that is one of the nicest dogs I have ever seen.

yeah, i know.
i have had 4 GSDogs over the decades.
i didn't want to start over from a puppy.
the constant attention of trying to teach them to not leave a mess on the carpet or kitchen floor
and teach them how to behave.
i had a couple of GSDogs i raised from a pup.
they were really good but a lot of work.
they need to be trained the first 1-2yrs.
if that window is missed they can be difficult and maybe aggressive.
i think that is what i have with this female GSD.
she is a little aggressive.
>>>>>I know someone that has mostly pit bull that is one of the nicest dogs I have ever seen.<<<<
yeah, i dunno if i believe that some breeds are bad.
maybe the owners made the dog that way.
there is no shortage of animal cruelty.

I agree that starting with a puppy is the best way to proceed from a training standpoint. Still, an enormous amount of time & effort has been spent breeding different lines to have various attitudes & temperaments 'out of the box.'

For example, I understand that huskies were bred to be independent-thinkers, which can be a valuable trait in rugged, icy conditions, when some kind of problem arises, let's say on a sled trek. By the same token, some people can find that trait irksome in domestic situations, when a husky can be perceived as 'stubborn,' or prone to howling for little apparent reason.

Another example are herding dogs, which have been bred to be observant and highly active. Evidently they need lots more exercise than most other breeds, as they naturally have high motors. As many people have learned to their chagrin, 'high-motor' breeds can get stressed and act out in isolation, having accidents and tearing up furniture, etc, even if otherwise a well-behaved, well-trained dog.

And pit bulls? They're bred to stay quiet before acting, which is generally the opposite of classic pack dog behavior, which tends to aim for encircling their prey, using vocalisations and their strong natural coat smell to herd the prey towards other members of the pack. Meanwhile, pit bulls tend to stealthily approach, bite down hard, and not let go despite suffering a surprising amount of bodily trauma to themselves.

So you can train up a dog all you like, but in terms of breeds, they're naturally going to have a certain amount of disposition & purpose no matter what, on top of their individual personality. It's kind of the whole point of the historic effort to breed certain dogs for certain jobs or situations, such as lap dogs, which never remotely existed in nature.
