Gottlieb Hollywood Heat (Gottlieb, 1986) Start Up Issues

Greetings all, I am a total noob to these forums so excuse any ignorance in my posts.

I have a Hollywood Heat pinball that will not start a game. It will attract, then when I push the start button it says "the heat is on" and plays a siren sound that slowly fades and then nothing happens. Originally when the machine would turn on it would say "slam switch open"...so I adjusted it to be closed and all was fine.

Any thoughts? The machine was recently serviced but it hasnt been played since.

I thought it might be a ball issue, but I pulled the cover from the ball slot and everything checks out. All the solenoids work during tests.

Have you tried reloading the Factory Default Settings? Not sure, but something like following the instructions in the LED Display, Press Enter, Left Flipper, Start, Start.
Then if the machine says "balls missing" pick up the balls and put them on the playfield to roll back to the drain while watching the display, but that's only a guess.

So I cant find any type of sequence of buttons. I am however now noticing that the pop bumper, and some of the other solenoids arent firing during tests. There is only one pop bumper board, but also the drop targets arent resetting at all when i put them down. It seems like half the machine isnt functioning....losing my mind. ive unplugged everything and plugged it back in a ton of times. checked all fuses, made sure all the switches it wants to be closed are closed (slam). the only thing im curious about is that the switch matrix test says "all switches open" which is def not true.

All switches open? That is you big problem causing it not to start. Sounds to me like you have a ground problem between the backbox and the playfield. That would explain all of your symptoms. I do not know gotlieb machines that well but on Williams machines you have a large ground braided ground strap between the Playfield and backbox. See if you have something like that and make sure the connection is good.

It has a yellow ground going all over the machine as well as into the backbox. I undid all the bolts and re tightened them at all the points. Same issue. This machine wasnt a permanent addition at my house so it will be going back to its owner a little sooner then expected. oh well.

I had much sucess on many machines by doing this: Press in on all the chips- push them in with medium force as if they were loose, you should hear some crackling (a little) as the prongs are pushed in a bit. Next take off all the connectors one by one- on and off, on and off. Once or twice per connector. Sometimes a dirty connector or chip prong will cause weird things. This was one of the first things I tried when servicing machines.

do you have the correct number of balls in the game? it will not start a game if one is missing or the game doesnt see it

Can you get to solenoid test - are they all working?

Could be earthing prob - check all white cables are not burned up by transformer where fuses are - look for any white molex plugs connector blocks around this area for burn marks where cable(s) are not properly earthed.

BTW - I always soldered direct permanently closed SLAM switches of which there are 3 as I recall,

1- on coin door
2- on underside of playfield
3- on transformer board or nearby to plumb bob floating or swinging tilt weight.


these switches were always a pain in the rectum for any operator.

startup issues with Hollywood Heat

You have a dead fuse, most likely in the F10 fuse slot
This can be accessed by opening the door and looking up to the left.
You will see fuse F9, F10, F11 and F12
You do not need to raise the playfield to access this fuse
The fuse is a 1 AMP slo-blow
Use either Buss or Little glass fuses model AGC (1-1/4 inch in length)

I had a similar issue and traced it to this fuse
