VP8 VP9 Recreation Help How do I fix Kickers that won't release a ball? The script seems correct, but a table with this problem is attached,in case it IS prob w/ the script...

FIRE!
The title says it all. I have no idea how to get the kickers to release the ball,on the ONLY VP8 "Fire!" table that still exists(there was another,at 1 time)...

It should be noted, there's a script-error that keeps it from working in basic VP8. It only seems to work in VP9.2.1 & VP9.9.2,actually(the exact Script Error is at the bottom of the message,if you need/care to see it)...

Anyway,I've tried putting a timer on & enabling them & lots of other things in the table editor. But,as I don't understand how kickers are /supposed/ to work,in the script. I'm REALLY hoping someone that does, can look at this file/table & tell me what to do...

For some reason,no one else seems to be having these probs. at VPForums(where I got the file from). Or else, they can't get past the file even loading. So,no one has ever uploaded a "fixed" version of this table & everyone else acts like the table works fine. But,without altering ANYTHING in the file, the ball without fail,ALWAYS gets permanently locked in the kickers. Which,is meant so there will be balls for the multi-ball mode(they're Ball Locks,IRL). But,the problem is no new ball is created & the game just "sits" there w/ the ball sometimes visible, under the ramp graphics(when this applies)...

However, this doesn't seem to /always/ apply to Kicker5 & Kicker 6 seems to work correctly. But,Kicker 6 has a proper-looking Destroy ball/Create ball routine. While, the other kickers have some weird version of this that sounds custom-created by the script-writer wanting to make it have unique wording(maybe that's the problem?)...

Anyway,if anyone EVER reads this,PLEASE take a look at this table & tell me what you think is causing the ball locks to not release a new ball, somehow(except Kicker6,as mentioned above). Btw-nudging doesn't release the ball, either. It should also be noted: Kicker5 is the only 1 "enabled" & it sometimes locks-up,without producing a new ball,as well...

Finally,If you're going to say because of my name/past I should know what to do,be aware that I NEVER had this problem. As,there were NO kickers in the original "Fire!" table I modded/fixed. Long-story-short,I fixed the defective Capture Hole areas on the side of the table using the editor. But,since the script was correct for them, all I did was re-position the parts causing trouble. It was not like this,AT ALL...

Anyway,ANY ideas/info on what part of the script forces a kicker to not-release a ball, would be helpful. As,I would be willing to sacrifice the multi-ball. If,there seems to be no other way to allow the game to continue on. But,any ways to make this table playable, after activating the Kickers(except Kicker6)would be of great help...

-Thanks in advance for any advice,as I'm desperate to solve this problem...

P.S.-If 1 runs the table in VP8,this is the error you see: Line 0 Object doesn't support this property or method: mSlingBump(...).SlingshotThreshold

For this particular table, try using the VPinball6 OLD.exe added as attachment.
Place the VPinball6 OLD.exe in same folder as your VP8.exe.
Now try running the table with this VPinball6 OLD.exe, and the kickers release the ball properly.
I don't think it is the kickers.
I think the ball is getting caught on table objects.
Perhaps the ball is bigger when played through VP8 and VP9?
Or maybe wall collision behaviour was changed in VP8 and VP9?

Actually, when I move the kickers to a place LITERALLY impossible to interact with, there is no problems. This,is why I think the kickers at the top of the table, are not working properly...

Also, the 1 kicker that performs correctly each time(Kicker6),has a differently-written script from the others. Also,Kicker5,just below it doesn't seem to act incorrectly. Unless,it's hit at certain times or maybe at a certain angle. Which, makes it hard to determine when it /does/ mess-up,what causes it to...

Thanks for the recommendation of a different ball-size,tho. Unfortunately,it can't be altered in VP8,it doesn't seem...

BTW-I can't test the table in VP6 or VP8,because I always get this Line Error,in anything before VP9:
Line 0 Object doesn't support this property or method: mSlingBump(...).SlingshotThreshold

How do I stop this error from appearing in the script???

How do I stop this error from appearing in the script???

Try updating your scripts.
Download this stand alone package for VPX 7.3. here...

Simply copy the contents into your Visual Pinball folder, and overwrite when asked.
These scripts are backwards compatible. So they work with all versions of VP, even the older versions.
If you have your scripts in the tables folder, then copy the scripts folder from package to there.
Do not have them in both the table and scripts folder at same time, as this may cause problems.

I never place scripts anywhere other than the Scripts folder. Unless, someone specifically says I MUST for a table to work. As,I know how confusing it becomes when U do this(I used to,back in 2012 when I had probs. using the launcher,sometimes)...

Anyway,I tried what you suggested, with the new, larger s11.vbs file ONLY in the scripts folder. Then, when it didn't work,I tried with a copy of the new s11.vbs in the tables folder, where I keep the Fire! table that's not working(I have a few folders inside the main tables folder,in order to keep things organized more to my liking). Since, the script file of the table, says it needs the vbs file to be in the same folder where I keep this table at(of course, they all said this in the old days)...

Anyway,I just can't figure-out what to do to keep this scripts error of "Line 0" from happening...

The only thing left, would be to change all "slings" threshold to 0,I guess(I removed the cases of 1.1,already to see if /that/ would work). I mean,if I'm getting a slings threshold error,it's because of a threshold value not being 0,right???

That is,all of the slings on the table have a threshold of either 1 or 1.1 & I tried changing them all to 1,in case the decimal was counting as an invalid value. And,of course, that didn't fix anything...

So,what next???

Wait a sec.. trying w/o the scripts in multi locations,srry...

If you are worried about losing your old scripts, just copy them to a folder in documents.
Then move all of the scripts from the standalone package into wherever you keep your scripts.
Just copying the s11.vbs over may not work.

OK,I've tried every way possible of using the script file of s11.vbs both new AND old. Always 1 file of it only in VP,at a time. That is,the s11 in scripts only. The s11 in the tables folder(within a Fire! folder I specifically have made, while testing various alternate versions of the file I attached). Both new & older s11 has been tested this way, also. I'm quite convinced the s11 script isn't causing it. Maybe, they left something invalid somewhere that won't show in the scripts"" I mean,it's saying Line 0. Which, makes no sense unless it's a property ONLY on the table,in the editor???

This seems most-likely. But,there is NO mslingBump according to the "Select" button within the editor. Which,is why I am trying to figure-out HOW can I affect the mSlingBump, then???

Oh OK,sorry. was typing the last when U posted this. Will try that now. Thought since script only says "s11" it was the only 1 causing this prob. Yes,I worry that old files will act incorrect w/ the newer different scripts from the VPX install pack...

But,give me a min. to do what U suggested...
Just to be clear, after you move all of your old scripts into new folder, copy all of the new scripts only to your scripts folder.
Make sure you have no old ones in the tables folder.

The mslingbump VP8 error was fixed back in 2016. (Scripts are included with VPX standalone install that work for VP8.)
Here you can see I posted about the msling error.
and Toxie fixed it....
So I actually was the person who first reported this error. (You can thank me later...lmao)

Some VP8 tables will require that the vbs file be in same folder as table.

To change these tables to use the scripts folder, and thus allowing these tables to be played from any folder, here is what you do.

Look for this in the table script....

ExecuteGlobal CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject").OpenTextFile(VBSfile, 1).ReadAll

and change it to this...

ExecuteGlobal GetTextFile(VBSFile)

Here is a list of tables that are dependant on having vbs file in same folder as table.

I have went through every Desktop Table available here (I will add FS Tables if any later)

And have found the Tables that are dependant of a VBS Scripts File being in same folder for table to work.

Some I have listed are no longer available here, but i figured i would add them in case you have these older downloads. They will be marked with ???.

So if you want to run your Visual Pinball Program with the VBS Scripts in the "Scripts" folder located in your Visual Pinball folder, as mentioned above.

C:\Visual Pinball\Scripts

You will have to edit the script in all these Tables with the method described above.

Hope this helps you with your VP8 tables.

OK,sorry I took so long. I actually managed to get the table working in both VP6 & VP8. But,I needed to play it for awhile,in order to make sure the ball wouldn't get trapped anywhere or act in a way that was unexpected. I especially became concerned, when it seemed like balls wouldn't release from their locks,if the active 3rd ball drained. Thereby, confusing the game that the last ball on the playfield was gone & that it should therefore release any trapped balls...

But,if 1 waits long enough & nudges the table a few times, they will /eventually/ be released. While, this means there are still probs. I can at least now try & work-out solutions by play-testing attempts to fix this...

On the subject,do U think it's because of the timer amount set for these kickers? the timer isn't enabled for these specific kickers, but maybe it still matters what value is shown in the editor??? I admit,I'm not understanding why the value of "10" seems to take so long. Given, this is the default timer value,I would think it's like 10 secs. or something. Am I wrong thinking these are translatable time-increments??

Just wondering,as I know U are a MAJOR table designer/editor with much experience & imagine U know /exactly/ what is needed,to fix the balls not releasing properly. Tho,to be clear, they behave /much/ more correctly, than before. So,a BIG Thank You for helping me resolve things enough, that I could finally play the table again! :)

I imagine asking U to play-test the table to see what I mean is asking a bit much from U. But,if U know anyone else who has time & doesn't mind,I would be happy to hear from them, after they play-test the file...

Anyway,it appears U were right about not having all of the correct scripts. I never would've thought I needed more of the files to be correct, than what I had. As, a lot of them should've been from the standard VPX Install pack. Since, that's what I used to install VP. However,I /did/ import some old script files from my collection of saved 2016-range scripts. Since, they appeared to be those not in the VPX provided scripts. But,I guess the VPX 7.3 might've fixed some script errors in VPX. As,I know that's what was said in the old days, about needing to install certain versions of VP. Due,to the scripts sometimes not being as accurate,1 release to the next...

However,I'm still confused why such an old table wouldn't have worked w/ Scripts from the same age or even later,in some cases??? Is it possible, the standard VPX install pack had inferior files that were actually not even as good as my old 2012-2016 age files?? I mean,I didn't replace the newer w/ my older files. So,that seems the cause,possibly...

In any case,I'm EXTREMELY Grateful/Thankful for your patience & I'm sorry I over-looked something so simple. I /would/ appreciate a little help w/ the ball-lock prob. tho,if you aren't too busy right now. However,I think it would require U to play the game until the 3rd ball drains,w/ balls locked,as I described near the beginning of this reply. So,likely U aren't interested in doing that, anytime soon. I mean, that's asking a bit much,I guess...

But,like I said,if U can ever find anyone that would & might have ideas, after seeing what happens in the way described,PLEASE let me know what they think would solve this...

-Thanks again,REALLY means a lot U would help me like this! :)

OK I have read further-down than just what U linked. So,as U said before, that it would be a bad thing to have the vbs files in both the tables folder and the main scripts folder. When, concerning the VP8 tables that require that the needed vbs be in /that/ tables folder, does that mean in order to keep from causing probs. by having BOTH vbs files,I can really only keep things working properly,by changing the script line,as suggested so it will recognize the script folder, instead???

I mean,it doesn't sound like there's an alternative...

I would point-out tho,in the old VP8-into-VP9 days,I did as U & kept copies of the needed scripts per-table & with each table in it's OWN folder. As,this is what was said was best, for this VERY reason. Since,no one was really familiar w/ altering script,in the way U discovered. Or,else it was just so rarely known, that this would work...

Anyway, yes, you're right,I do owe U for having stumbled-upon the mSling thing, yourself & being the first to bring attention,so that there would be a fix w/ later vers. of VPX. So,I am Thankful you brought it to attention & stressed the importance of keeping the old VP8 players from getting frustrated w/ such a thing. As,U can prove now,all these years later,in an odd twist-of-fate,w/ me... :D

I was wondering why U didn't seem to be directing me where to find the "mSling-SlingThreshold". I see now, you've been familiar w/ this for quite a while,it turns out... ;)

I'm glad you're 1 of the few who can relate to having an interest in these old things, sorry for making it sound like U wouldn't even have interest in "Fire!", like that. But,it seems like the focus is either on making VP9 tables for Dual Monitor users. Or,just making tables for VPX from now on. Which, both things are not of any use,to me. I mean,I like that VP9 is more realistic, usually. But,MOST tables in VP9 seem to be really meant for a WS monitor/TV & I'm actually still using an old CRT. Not,that I'm ignorant enough to think ppl should still be making files for square screens,or anything. But,there should at least be a Full-Screen alternative for every table in now-old VP9,I would think...

Then again,I've been away since sometime in 2016(I remember the last posts I saw, were admins looking for VPX beta-testers)! So,of course I should just be glad there isn't a VPXX,or something. Although, that's probably because the main VP-leaders knew to keep VP from having constantly-updated versions. I remember back in 2012,when I jgot into all of this, there were concerns over ppl being confused that there were 9 VP versions, technically. And,that there was a constant need to explain, that just because there's a new update, doesn't mean that older VP forms would be obsolete. However, once VP8-into-9 was happening, ppl were encouraged to abandon anything before VP7 & upgrade to VP8,as much as possible. As,it was considered THE most-stable & compatible for different users...

Anyway,it's all so that newcomers to virtual pinball of whatever kind, can see all the hard work that went into the many tables in the early-days. And realize,it's mostly because of older-generations of people REALLY into Bagatelle,Payout,& Pinball machines, that this is as complete as it all is. And,I'm not saying I had anything to do w/ that, really(I never played Pinball as much as regular videogames, myself). I mean,I wasn't able to contribute much, since I didn't have access to any pinball machines IRL & could only mess w/ things in the editor. And,it's not like that requires much skill(it does take patience, tho). But,I was encouraged to try & fix the tables that I found seriously un-playable & without anyone bothering to do anything about it(not sure why they would upload without seemingly play-testing them). I just only ever encountered 2 tables that were in an un-playable state...

Well, anyway,I've just dragged this on WAY too long probably, but I guess some of this will matter,to someone, eventually. So,forgive the length,I tend to be 1 of those that always finds new things to bring-up & I rarely know what to cut-out after finishing thoughts. As,I don't want to leave anything out, that might make a difference,or something. But,my final thought,is about how U & I relate over the importance of preserving VP & the tables. But,"Toxie" seems to represent the mindset of a lot of ppl these days,sadly...

Thanks for everything & let me know if you have ideas on what can be done about the Ball Locks being timed wrong, after the last ball drains...

-Take Care :)
