I woke up this morning thinking about Petula Clark.
Is she all but forgotten now?
Your thoughts, and add your own favorite female singers.

great voice, nice song, has not aged well down my way.
used in an off-broadway play i reckon it could still slay,
but my guess is that few people listen to this today.

You're off your nut! You're out of your brain!
They played it on Lost.
It can still sustain!

Although, for me, Pet has always been not-quite-Dusty-Springfield. There was a certain low point in my life a few years back when I listened to this nearly every day. Man, does it do the trick! Especially in comparison to Dionne Warwick's elevator-music version that was released with The Thomas Crown Affair. But you'll have to look that one up yourself. I don't want to dirty up my post with it.

I still play Petula Clark's 'Downtown' Then I follow up with Til Tuesday's '(Even Downtown) Voices Cary' . With Aimee Mann's haunting and powerfull voice and those 'Garry Newman' sounding keyboards. The attached Mp3 is free of the male narrative in the vidi and is actually free in general.

Wow! Talk about a Throwback Thursday! I'm pretty sure Aimee Mann and I went to the same hair stylist in the mid- '80s! The logical next step is to go back in time through the future! Or something like that. This group is called The Like. Their (apparently) last album released a few years back showed what would have happened if a '60s girl group morphed with a garage band.

I like it. :)

to leave LULU off the list would be a in-justice. her to sir with love will always be one of my favs. one of the earliest movie sound tracks that i know of. female singers of that era were huge juke box hits. i think because the parents of the children liked the songs as well. good clean songs, great tunes , unlike some of the female singers of today.

You got it, PD! Are those scenes from the movie they're showing in the clip? Because it's been about 35 years since I've seen it.

Yes. Those are stills from the movie. I saw it at The Cornell Theater in '68.
I liked Lulu, but I had a crush on Judy Geeson. Under the velvetine-carpeted high vaulted ceiling of The Cornell. She also played the psychotic daughter of Joan Crawford in the movie, "Berserk". Remember the musical number from that horror film, sung by the freaks?
"And it might be me!". Beware!

I remember the hood in "To Sir, With Love". He looked like Roger Waters!. But he wasn't evil.

The Cornell Theater. Long gone in the heart of "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" Now a mini-mall with a Popeye's Fried Chicken, a cig shop, a dry cleaners and a hair stylist!

hey, lesley gore just passed a couple days ago. tears roll down mongo cheeks like methane pass on bean night.

It's My Party
Judy's Turn to Cry
You Don't Own Me
etc...?

Funny you should mention Mongo! I just watched a rather good Richard Pryor bio called Omit the Logic. Mel Brooks revealed that Pryor wrote my favorite line in that movie!
I have a troubling relationship with the late Leslie Gore. I used to listen to a Sunday night oldies show on a local station growing up and the DJ seemed to have a real thing for "It's My Party"... and its sequel. And, yeah... there's no real "etc" Nic... you pretty much wrapped up her singing career right there.

back when vhs was video and dvd was coming out. i went into a video rental store that was getting rid of vhs to make room for the new dvd's. i picked up some vhs tapes dirt cheap. blazing saddles was one of them. it was a un-cut version that still had all the N words in it. i guess if it was released on dvd all those racial words were cut out. not that im a racist.

The new kids know nothing about tell it like it was. I suppose it now works opposite of the intention that was then. Now it ends up starting things all over again.

But back then, it was all about the hypocrisy.
Well, that's about all for now...

Death To The Censors..."The Sheriff Is Near"

It should be a crime to broadcast edited movies like a copyright violation:no:. I can't stand to watch the Blazing Saddles hack job on TV. I find the censoring of movies perverse and made worse by the decision to change what gets edited from year to year. "A laurel And Hardy Handshake " to another great PN thread.:salut:

It should be obvious that this Blazing Saddles is a Warner Bros. picture, and that Warner Bros. is Time Warner, and so, you are expected to pay for the good stuff, forever!

Let me put it to you this way. When the local Los Angeles KTLA Ch. 5 was owned by Golden West Broadcasters (Gene Autry), they ran movies with minimal editing to unedited. They even had a "Movies for Adults" late night movie series in the mid 1970's, and it was a Lot Like Turner Movie Classics, and it was where I first saw "Contempt" with Bridgette Bardot. They only cut out the bogus prolonged "Playboy" scenes of her laying around like a playmate video that were added due to the producer's demands and against the wishes of the director. All the other scenes were left intact.

When Warner Bros. bought KTLA, the unedited movies vanished.

KCOP Ch. 13 also ran minimal-to-unedited films. They broadcast "The Deer Hunter" uncut in the 1980's, several times, and the usual z-movie fare. I remember a film. "The Mighty Jungle". At the end of the film, we see a topless "South-American native", actually one of my current neighbors, but this was back in '62. It aired intact.

When Paramount bought Ch. 13, no more Deer Hunter. No more "Mighty Jungle" with my neighbor's jugs hanging out. Besides, she's a Grandma now...

And KTTV Ch. 11 was home to the really great horror shockers. They ran on the "Chiller" movie series, and on The All Night Movies hosted by Cal Worthigton (a Ford dealer) from dusk til dawn. Bava and gore, and "Black Sabbath" and "The Brain That Wouldn't Die". Sometimes edited for nudity, but not gore.

Fox bought and the horror films vanished. You have to pay for the good stuff...

It's not that Debbie ain't doing a much better job than most rockers her age (or younger)... but I don't like to think of her aging like normal people do. I want her to stay like she was in that incredibly-hot picture of her with Iggy that Nic posted. Then again, look how hard Cher has tried to stay that age, and how creepy the results are. Maybe it's just the mirror into my own mortality that frightens me the most. I guess we can't be 14 forever, holding the AutoAmerican album cover in one sweaty hand.

interesting thoughts, bill...

btw guitar that the white-haired dude is playing is pretty badass indeed. light, super-strong, four pickups and even functions acoustically due to being hollow. looks like it can be had for the low, low price of... $3,500!

yeah, my danelectro has nothing to fear. :/

I don't know Nic... that thing just doesn't look like a guitar to me. I firmly believe that, after the invention of the Flying V, guitar companies should have just said "we've done everything that needs to be done. We're going to do ahead and quit now." You know, just like every responsible business does.
I looked at that page again. It looks like a lot of the technological benefits are made with players in mind, rather than the increasingly-older talentless goofs that are watching them (hands up!). But for me, it's hard to beat a hollow-body Fender. I'm getting a rock'n'roll erection just looking at it!

whoa, i've never seen a switch setup like that.

so i assume the three bottom ones control the pickups, but what are the top ones for...?

btw when i was going through my peter bagge stuff (graphic novels), i found a pretty rich section on the temper tantrums of murray wilson, the boys' dad. i think the link is still active if you want to check it out.

Wow! A graphic Beach Boys novel? I am interested! But it was pretty well covered in this book. What a dick turd! Murry, not the book or author. Actually, the guy does a pretty good job summing up their career without getting into "phone-book-size" territory. SPOILER ALERT: Mike Love's a dick turd, too.

back on the subject of movies. here in my town we have a older theatre that charges $3 a person all the time and the snacks are resonable. they arent first run movies , mostly movies that are ready to hit disc. a lot of disney movies for the kids , rarely a R rated movie , and never any movies that contain any nudity. they only have usually 2 showings a night , and some days a matinee. they just got all newer seats , might have been from a theatre that closed down , and still did not raise their prices. my questions are what do these mega theatres charge for tickets in your area? do young guys still take their girlfriends on movie dates, and at what cost? what about a family of 4 going to a movie and even with child discounted priced tickets , what kind of dent does that put in moms budget? some places like credit unions offer discounted movie tickets that you buy ahead of time , so its cheaper and you might not have to stand in a ticket line.
