Surprising and sad... but I guess not shocking. They guy did look like a heart attack waiting to happen. I remember when The Sopranos was announced, and I realized it starred the guy who had a small but memorable role as a hitman in True Romance... and I couldn't wait for the series. Gandolfini more than lived up to those expectations.
