Ok...doing my annual MAME update... anything worthwile released lately? Looks like they haven't fixed a lot of games since my last update (about a year ago or so...!!)

And where did the new SEGA games go... Star Wars Trilogy, etc?

I think thet are still trying to dial in the board emulation for Sega's newer games, aren't they on the NAOMI boards? I know the emulation for NAOMI isn't perfected yet. Some of CAPCOM's games are on those. BTW, where's a good place for the artwork, such as backdrops and bezels, for MAME?

If you're interested in old oddities, Taito's very rare Steel Worker was recently added. I don't remember what's exactly new from a _year_ ago, but Buggy Boy/Speed Buggy, TX-1, Cube Quest, Firefox, and Turbo Sub might be some to check out. The laserdisc games require download of a very large CHD file, however.

You can get artwork here:

Are all of the .CHD/laserdisk files available on subscriber-only sites or are there alternatives? I don't want to mess with bittorrent. Every site that I know of requires some kind of mandatory donation like $75 in order to access the CD-ROM and .CHD/laserdisk downloads.

Not really any alternatives, since the CHDs are so large (over 10 gigs)

Stupid thing!

Well, with server costs, $75 is not That stupid.

Just recently, I got the CHD files for some of the Speed racing games and fighting games like SFIII through BitTorrent with very little waiting and no viruses. I just wish my onboard video supported the NFL Blitz games. :verysad:

With most of the .chd games you need a dedicated heavy-duty video card with high video RAM, same as Future Pinball.

I'm not that privileged financially right now. Maybe I should make a AGP Video card my wish, eh? I was playing Do! Run Run and broke my highest score ever: 569,720! I was on Scene 32 and had a diamond on Scene 4. At one point, I had 8 men in reserve. Shocked myself with that score.

I like Mr. Do! as well. It's Mr. Do!'s Castle and Do!'s Wild Ride as well as Neo Mr. Do! I don't care for. I play them, but not as much as the two forementioned.

that's not true,
unfortunatly mame just uses a frame-buffer & does all the hard stuff with the main cpu.
what is a pain, is you need real hardcore power for the newer games.
3-4ghz 64bit and ideally a real 64bit o.s.

just install vuze ( a simple torrent client) and go here:

and search "mame"
or be lazy - i did it for you! :)

btw, i own a mr.do pcb :)
i want to buy a mr.do's castle next.

i tried the neo version but it just - well it was like being very drunk and smoking a weed - i thought my eyesight was screwed!

Some things just can't be replicated, and Mr. Do! is one of them. I remember reading the fact that someone called Mr. Do! "poor man's Dig Dug". I always thought Mr. Do! was better than Dig Dug.

maybe usenet but you have to pay to get good speeds / retention.

oh yeah! neo mr do is an eyesore!! I always freaked when I dropped an apple and the diamond started glittering! good times!

For me, it was making the lines meet in Do! Run Run and hearing the diamond when it showed up. A friend of mine once SHOT the diamond! It took 2 weeks before it ever showed up again. I always thought the sound of the diamond in Mr. Do! was the most evil sound, I barely ever got it. The creatures always got me before I got it. In MAME, it's definitely different, I get it almost every time.

Is there a way to prevent MAME uifx32 from deleting the game highscores when you press F3?

Well yeah... don't press F3... but this is completely retarded feature.

Played a new record to Space Duel (after 30 years).... and been playing Peter Pac Rat a lot. If you want a difficult game go for that one...!

Star Castle is pretty tough after 10 levels, the castle just homes in on you and fires at an ungodly speed. The toughest one for me is Fatal Fury 3. The steel worker is the one character that makes me wish Akuma was in the game. Nothing like a Gou-Shou-Massatsu to defeat your opponent. (Gou-Shou-Massatsu = Raging Demon)

Unfortunately, there is no way to keep from resetting the high scores on the majority of games when you press F3. Some of the games, like Berzerk and Asteroids, however, will retain their high scores. Games like Pac Man, Gaplus, and Space Invaders wont.

Thanks... I wonder what version introduced that totally braindead "feature"... I might revert back to that one as the new MAMEs haven't added anything worthwile anyway.... Buggy Boy is pretty cool though.

I've always used F3 as a quick restart when I blew my game... and realized that lots of my precious high scores were missing.

PS: The reason why some games won't reset the scores is that they use NVRAM file as the high score saving method...!!

Maybe you could create a NVRAM file for those games? It sounds feasible, if it can be done. As far as versions, AFAIK, all versions did that. I remember using MAME32 version 0.99 and it did the same thing. Now, I'm using MAMEUIFX version .133. It does the same thing. From version .127 on, it does change the setting for Do! Run Run to where you have five men and the settings are set to hard with no diamond. And you can't change the settings.

Xevious... maybe the most legendary and revolutionary shooter game doesn't save high scores, either... I have emailed the guy (Leezer) who maintains the unofficial hiscore.dat but he never fixes it... it used to work.

I just played my all time best score (513.000) and was highly disappointed that it didn't get saved...!!

Well as long as my Gravitar high scores are safe... those are lifetime achievements...!! :D

That's why I take snapshots of my high games, just hit P for pause and F12. Snapshot and score saved for bragging rights. ::):
