Hey, Looking for some input. I have had some issues with using LED's on playfields. Some have been too bright. They glare into my vision if under inserts, low on the playfield. I have noticed some strobing LED's that effect game play. This strobe effect is anoying/most noticed when a fast moving ball is close to the lighting source. The LED's are responding to the scanning in lamp matrix. Could a capacitor added across the LED suppress this flicker? I have some ghosting issues but that doesn't bother me too much.

I have tried a few LED's as General Illumination. Some were too short and shined up through plastics but not out on the playfield. The other I had emitted light sideways. Those have a light chip with wires going into the socket. They illuminated the playfield good enough but failed to light the plastics.

It has been a couple years since I gave these LED's a try. I have had problems with having to replace driver board G.I. connectors that keep burning up. I want to replace those bulbs with LED's that draw less amps.

What would be a good replacement for Pop Bumper lamps?

How about some suggestions for some (maybe newer) LED's to replace playfield incandescent lamps...C_S

Never tried them before. Give me the old no. 44 and 47 bulbs!!

Is that a gay environmentalist's dance? In a word....

NO!!

Greg, you're my friend and you're in California, but don't let them get to you man! Global warming's a crock of shit anyway. A lot of scientists who voted it was real wouldn't have gotten their grant's renewed if they had voted it wasn't real. It was me ok?! I owned a pickup truck!! My bad!!

The Weight Of The Universe

A list of my concerns could fill a Mobius strip. On both sides even. If you have any idea of how profound[or impossible]that is, you probably have plenty on your mind too.... "That's The News And Have A Pleasant Tomorrow"

Mobius strip, wow, I haven't heard that in a while!

Global warming's a crock of shit.....
(Insert guffaw here) My favorite scifi author team, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle (with Michael Flynn), put together one 'for the fans' in 1991 called "Fallen Angels" which pretty much asserted that. The basic premise was that the Greenies had driven the Techies off the planet ("And take your damned technology with you!") which pretty much suited everybody well, except that atmospherics and other gases needed occasional replenishing by use of scoopships skimming gas giants, moons...and Earth.

Frantic maneuvering is not welcome to a crew unaccustomed to gravity, but you gotta do what you gotta do when the blip on the radar is closing this quickly.....

The 'angel' called Piranha took a minor hit from someone's left-behind piece of technology, fired by some damned hypocrite, and thumped down on the North Dakota glacier with two crewmembers rendered invalid by the gravity well and unable do do anything but wait for rescue.....or capture.

And the race was on....."Throw another log onto the fire..."

kind of like the flick Elysium where the rich folk hover over a ravaged earth
while us poor unfortunates have to deal with earths problems like water shortages
pollution, disease, etc...while they 'live the good life'

"Six Of One"...I figure the incandescent lamps are bringing on the end of the world by wasting all those Watts.

Who knows what??? from manufacturing LED's will lead to the next extinction..."Half Dozen Of The Other"

Small world, funny-you-should-mention-that, and all that; due to the dearth of watchable prime-time TV brought on by the holidays (at least Person Of Interest was new Tuesday), I wound up at a Redbox last night.....and rented Elysium. After seeing the Habitat, I fully expected to see Larry Niven's name in the credits because it was obviously (to me, anyway) modeled after his Ringworld, albeit in a much smaller scale.

Gotta get busy on that Med-bay project before someone throws a grenade into my vicinity.....

"Waiting For The Gift Of SOUND&VISION"

Hmmm...You guys are into these movies...Maybe I'm missing out on something? 99 and 44 one hundredths % of what comes out of Hollywood is lost on me these days. I went to the theater once this year... BIG BIG SOUND...BOOM RUMBLE RUMBLE BOOM...But like the music industry not much fuel there for the soul. I'm gona get some of these DVD's and see what the state of science fiction is like here at the end of the year. About the music this year. My favorite radio station from over the hill is WTMD. Towson State's radio is having it's annual listener poll for your top favorite 89.7 songs of the year. 89 Songs?...This Year??? For the first time in my life I can't think of one freaking song that 'did it for me' released this year. Can you?

In a word.....no.

In a paragraph.....HELL, no! (Short paragraph.)

In a longer paragraph.....I almost never have music on in the house; a recent exception was when I found out that the guy working on my 100-year-old piano (that I almost never play) liked Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and I fed him a real Trilogy---Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery back-to-back-to-back on my genuine Realistic (Radio Shack) Clarinette 107 AM/FM/Phono/Cassette Stereo combo a la 1973. Radio stopped playing anything for which I would tolerate the accompanying commercials long ago, so all I play in the car (when the power antenna decides to work) is sports and occasionally talk---as well-depicted in Red and Ted's Roadshow ("blah blah blah.....")

You might want to try some retro warm whites.

I've never used led's in a pin so I can't say anything about them. All I know about is the no.44,47's, and 455/855 (flashers).

I don't know a dang about LEDs in pinballs, how they're controlled by the boards,
but in general LEDs are pulsed by an oscillator in order to create the illumination.
Think in terms of the light created by a spark as seen from a static discharge, a spark plug, or one of those old "Eye of the Storm" globes. I could be wrong but smoothing an LED with a capacitor (in parallel?) would seem to remove the necessary pulse that is needed to create "the spark gap".

More than likely, if the LED can use it, you might try dropping the voltage output from the LED board pulse oscillator using a resistor voltage drop or a tuned pot, but I think the replacement LEDs for old school incandescent bulbs *I think* have the LED pulse oscillator built-in. Or do the LED upgrades come with a pulse oscillator board?

The LEDs that I know of pulse at the rate of our AC system. 60 Hz.

And Carbon Footprint??? Is that what happens when you pick up your groceries in a store in Los Angeles and the bottom of the paper bag drops out? Or is that when "the dainty reusable tote bags" get dirty from those nasty meat drippings?

Carbon Footprint: The number of Endangered Species that were harmed, killed, tickled too harshly, overmilked, lied about, lied to, chased after, fled from, made into paper, made from paper, forced into a life of crime, heckled, speckled, spat upon, up on a spit, painted to resemble a glow-in-the-dark five-legged frog that nobody gives a shit about anyway, and deprived of the opportunity to complain about having low self-esteem.

But not necessarily in that particular order.

Bless this fuel, O Lord, but please raise the octane.

No, I haven't been drinking.....have I?

Sleepy the LEDS he is referring to are the size of the 44 bulbs
and fit into the sockets for them on the play field itself!
they are multi colored though and since they are leds they also
leave a cooler footprint (they don't get as warm so save on warping plastics too!)

My understanding of LED's...Led's spray out photons from a junction of semiconductors that form a diode. A mysterious place where positive charges move around like electrons and electrons fall into holes. I Guess ther's photons at the bottom of those holes and they splash out. LED's run fine on pure DC. They will respond to pulses from an oscillator circuit as long as the diode is forward biased. They act like a diode and give no light or current flow if the polarity of the signal is reversed. They can flash at 60Hz or whatever frequency applied. Laser diodes can go to the Gigahertz range. I think your average LED can go from off to full brightness in about 1 millisecond. Those 'Warm White' Led's have a fluorescent layer that would make them slower to respond. I have found some nice looking high output warm white Led's with #44 bases. A bit pricy @ $3.65 each. Of course they are sold out. I want to try them as G.I. for "Dr.Dude" I did order replacement 'Trifurcon" connectors for my burning plugs ..C_S

Thank You "Faralos". After having a second look at your image of LED's I went on eBay and found(I Hope) what I've been looking for. That movie "Shame Of The Jungle" was pretty good too. How About the part where babies were being squeezed out into military Dicks. Very interesting analogy that. That movie site is a bit of a find also. I'm going to order some of these #44 & #555LED's and will report back about the results:salut:...C_S
