If you've never tried linux before and fancy giving it a go. I'd say you can't go wrong with this distro, it is linux for newbies more so then any other distro.

Hi Steve, I have been testing out both Ubuntu and Mint and a few others for about a year now. Doing the dual boot setup as well as VMWare setups too.

Have you installed WINE in Linux? This will allow you to run many windows based programs. Unfortunately not VP though.

If I was to set up a computer for a friend who only wanted to do emailing,web surfing, office type documents etc, I would definately set it up as Ubuntu or Mint.

If they were into gaming then I would set it up as Windows XP.

I look forward to the day when Linux will run all Windows applications as well as its own native applications.

Never tried WINE in linux as I don't see the point of it here ATM as I do have a dual boot with XP SP3.

The whole gaming deal is a shame, there's no technical reason games could not be developed for linux, but whilst the majority of people are buying and supporting MS windows, there is little reason for games developers to bother. XP is definately the last MS OS I'll ever buy.

I look forward to the day when there are linux alternatives to all windows applications, with the exception of games that is pretty much the case now.
