Lost Boy ? - Hemorrhage

i'm trying to figure this one out.

i hear plenty of college-style lou reed in the vocals, but the lead guitar in particular reminds me of something i can't put my finger on. something maybe post-punk, early to mid 80s. where glam rock is coming in, maybe.

any ideas, fellers?

Sounds kinda like David Byrne of the Talking Heads.

Boy, I hear a lot of groups in that song... mostly Pavement, I think... maybe a little Strokes... but definitely full-on Lou when it gets to the chorus. That song is good eatin'!

Upon a second listen, I've discovered that this song will drive me batshit. That rhythm guitar sounds very treble-heavy, just like... and that's where my brain stops working. I know that sound, it's close enough to be a homage to... who? Weezer? The Strokes? The Kalin Twins? It's only 3:41 in the AM so I'll have plenty of time to stay up and worry about this for both of us.

EDIT: Never mind... I think we have a winner! At least as far as my limited aural abilities go. Superchunk. And, yes, it is the correct answer to a question that doesn't have one. That's what you guys get for making me do all the work, slack motherfuckers!

Oh, and The Cure! Of course The Cure! And that's where I'm going to stop before I spend all night tracing this damn song back to the first caveman who tied a hunk of wooly mammoth hide to a stick and began plucking it.

that's some yeoman's work, sir. :) i can definitely hear similarities in cadence and bassline with the cure tune.

i liked that pavement tune a lot. you just earned the last piece of pizza AND the last beer. which reminds me... i haven't checked out your music blog in ages, zoiks!

EDIT: in the chorus and the outro i also hear some of those jangling / clanging guitars... a bit like... early pretenders.

Double-post! Looks like I was sufficiently high enough after all!

I think the true sign of a not-well mind is when one finds oneself listening to both songs at once to see if there are similarities. The only two conclusions I could draw are
1. It sounded like a particularly long and noisy car crash
2. I had gone completely 'round the bend
Well, get to work on that blog! After all, I'm still listening to your radio station! I usually put Soma lounge on when I need background music. It's like really groovy elevator music!
Tonight, I am two-for-three on writing responses and managing to erase them... and I'm not even high this time! Well... not really high. Maybe that's the problem!

groovy elevator music sounds about right for average lounge. a good play list can really make it come alive, however. particularly when scrolling through zoomquilt art or watching a tasty music visualisation, like milkdrop.

good to hear that ganja is well in your life. i wish i could find a strain that i liked, but maybe as legalisation comes along there will be more choices around here for me to sample.

okay yeah, i'll have a look. now to find that URL...

Beware of legislation. Th FDA makes for a lousy dealer.

That guitar (and some of that Lou) sounds like The Cars to me, but louder. Also redolent of Jim Carroll, Plimsouls (slightly) or half a dozen lost rockers whom I never met.

Really? Because I don’t hear any of those artists. What I’m hearing when I listen to the ones I listed is the brassy, trebly guitar played really forward in the mix, with an incessant rhythm. That, to me, brings to mind Velvet Underground mixed with stuff like the aforementioned Cure or even Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and then brought together by Pavement to create ‘90s non-grunge alt-rock.
And the Plimsouls were really an outgrowth of that wonderful bastard-child of The Beatles and ‘60s American garage-rock (which itself is a child of the Beatles. All of a sudden, we’re getting into some weird incest territory), and that would be power pop. If anyone reading this has ever loved rock music, the collection below is the missing gospel in your Bible. These songs were released as part of Rhino’s DIY (Do It Yourself) series, covering English and American rock and roll in the ‘70s and ‘80s. If you’re not familiar with it, you should Google the series. It’s an astounding collection of punk, pop and rock made from artists who have gone on to be living legends as well as people who are managing a Denny’s today (sometimes unfairly). This is, more or less, a recreation of Rhino’s two American Power Pop DIY CDs. Ready…set... air-guitar!

Throw in some "Pixies"....

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

@sleepy: please tell me you went to see The Plimsouls back in the day! For those "of a certain age" who aren't familiar with The Plimsouls you may know them better as "that band from the movie 'Valley Girl'."... one of the few classic '80s teen flicks that's not John-Hughes-related.

I didn't have to. "A Million Miles Away" was one of my Byrds-inspired tunes.
They wrote the lyrics about my spirit in leaving them. Its one of the artifacts of my hazing,

A Byrds-inspired version of "Million Miles Away"? Blech! Well, you should have gone to see The Plimsouls. They did a much better version of your song... and thank Gozer they didn't sound like The Byrds. They were only worth a damn when Gram Parsons was in the band until they hazed him out.

Yeah! I like Graham Parsons. I bought his first album when he was with The Rumour. I just played this. Don't you hate it when they put the wrong song in front of it for the paid ad?

Would you prefer Ozzy?

My list of 'favorite songs about an abortion" is pretty short, but this one ranks at the top.

That is one of those "end-of-career" tunes, isn't it? Like others sing about their wives and bending over for the newspaper at the door.
