Bally Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man Pinball (Bally, 1982) Just picked this up

Hello all,


Just picked up a Mr and Ms Pacman machine. The MPU is shot and have ordered a ultimate to replace it.

Question is... with the MPU disconnected, what should happen when turned on? I have 2 GI bulbs on and that is it. I'm sure it has bad bulbs, but should we hear any sound at this point?

Just wondering how bad off it really is.... Got it for almost nothing, PF and BG are almost perfect... just very dirty.

You can actually test the Squawk and talk board. When you open the backbox, the Squawk and Talk board will be the one on the swing door to the far left. When you turn the machine on, the test LED on the board should flash once, pause and then give 4 flashes and go out. This will let you know that it is getting power and passing self diagnostics. Push the button on the upper left hand corner of the board. You should hear and series of phrases spoken by the squawk and Talk. Remember that this machine has 2 volume controls. One on the Squawk and Talk and another on the coin door. Adjust both to a mid level and give it a try. Good luck. If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks for that info! I will try it out this afternoon and post my results. My shipment of parts including the new MPU should arrive today. I hope to see some life in this machine tonight.

Went through the power module last night and gave it a good cleaning, checked everything out and new thermal paste... so I hope all is good with it.

Well first the good news...

The replacement MPU worked like a charm. She fires up! Needs some bulbs replaced and a lot of cleaning.

Bad news is no sound.... tried the self test, flashes twice and the light goes out. Going to test the volume controls.

Also, what size fuse should be used on the ball kicker circuit? the current one is a MDL 2 8/10ths amp, is this correct?

As far and the Sound Board goes, since you are not getting the third flash, U11 on the sqauwk and talk board is likely bad. Until that is replaced, we will not know if there are any other problems with the board. My advise on this one is to contact Lenny's Pinball Repair. http://www.pinballrepair.net/index.html
Lenny does top notch work and is very reasonable. If you are willing to pay the shipping, he will troubleshoot your board and give you a repair quote. He charged me less than $150 to completely rebuild a Williams System 6 MPU and Driver Board. These had major issues. Your other option is to check e-bay for a used board.

I also found a refurbished board here http://www.ksarcade.net/bally-squawk-and-talk-as2518-61.html for $185.


What is the location(driver board or power supply board) and fuse number (ie, F1, F2, F3)? If you go to IPDB.org, they have the manual that you can download and it shows you the value of all of the fuses and locations.

Thanks for all the help! I download the manual the other day. Unfortunately it does not mention what the correct fuses are for under the PF.

I was able to get some sound out of this machine... Guess i hooked the power line up to it in the wrong spot.... It is very distorted and hums pretty bad and the pots are very dirty. I think I'm going to order a rebuild kit from Big Daddy and see if that corrects the issues.... Unless you think I have other issues. I don't want to waste money if it's not going to help.

Sounds to me like a rebuild kit might very well be the way to go. Let me know how you turn out.
