how is it that i can answer marty and rick honestly and with no intended blame towards anybody in particular, yet i feel guilty when both stop replying?

am i overly sensitive or did i cross the barrier of good taste?

Overly sensitive... :p

I was going to reply about the cow and pig intelligence comment but couldn't think of a good way to say it, here goes:

I haven't been around as many pigs as cows, but while there are differences in how individuals act I just don't see much personality in them generally. I've never seen adult cows or pigs play.

So I guess it's more a judgment call on how much of ourselves we see in certain animals. The more you are around horses you see how they play, have curiosity, teach each other tricks, learn how to open gates, etc..... Same goes for dogs, cats, some birds, and a hand full of other wild mammals.

Later,
Marty

interesting.
i will keep my eye on pig news and see if any evidence comes up. there are many possible reasons why pigs are not demonstrative of intelligence in ways that humans can readily appreciate, but right now i've got squat. :(

Hey Nic, Just the opposite here on my end. I thought That I was the one
that had offended people and crossed a barrier of good taste in this thread by mentioning eating certain meats. No offense taken here and I hope
no offense against me either.

By the way, today in our local Sunday
Newspaper there was an article about Race Horses that don't win at the track are being sold and end up being sent to Europe
to be,,,,,,,,,well,,,,,,,,you know what.

more money in slaughter houses than in glue factories, eh?

it makes sense, since you wouldn't want to breed them i guess.
seems kind of heartless to me if you're the owner, but then it's a business after all.

still, little seabiscuit wouldn't have had his run of incredible triumphs if is owner had sold him to europe. (since seabiscuit seemed like a dud at first)

The problem with horse and dog racing is the really short time the animal is in racing form. For horses they are only on the track from 3 to maybe 6 years old, and can live to 25 or 30.... Back before modern drugs to control parasites and infection they didn't live that long so it wasn't as big a problem, and this is relatively recent, 20 years ago there were few good anti-parasite drugs, now there's lots.

They are fragile animals to begin with, breeding them for speed for so long has made them more fragile. I wonder if we will ever see another triple crown winner. Unfortunately breeding in sturdier stock would slow them down a little, and no breeders are going to do that. It's not like car racing where you can just change a part in everyone's motors to slow everyone down at once.

This business of race horses and meat makes me think of animal shelters and feeding the abandoned. The city is always complaining about the budget deficits, yet they somehow manage to come up with food from somewhere for the animals they keep.
Nasty business.
