Stern Rawhide (Stern, 1977) Help! won't reset 3rd and 4th player score

Stern Rawhide won't reset 3rd and 4th player score and naturally it just chugs and chugs trying. A few of them will zero out slowly. I reset them manually and machine will start again. the score wheels are working good because they will add scored perfectly. I have checked all contacts and filed them. The reset relay for 3rd and 4th player works slow but it should still reset though it might be slower. Anyone have any idea what I might do to make it work?

Don't know how similar Bally score reels are to Gottlieb ones, but this sounds similar to issues I saw on my Magnotron.

On the Magnotron I had to clean most of the scoring reels (disassemble, clean parts with 90% alcohol, clean electical wiper contacts on printed circuit board with a very fine Scotchbrite pad and then with alcohol, then lube metal-to-metal (non-electrical) sliding contacts with teflon grease. In addition, most of my reels needed new advance springs (for which I found suitable replacements in a kit from Harbor Freight), and many needed a bit of adjustment on the advance blade (that keeps the reel from turning backwards) and on the switch contact pressure.

How I would proceed would be to pull one of the reels that's not resetting and manually try to advance it all the way around just by pushing and letting release the solenoid. If that cleanly advances through each step, then the mechanical part of the reel is probably OK. If it hangs on 9 or 0, cleaning, adjusting, and/or a new spring may be needed.

Next I would set it to somewhere in the middle (5 or so), and turn the machine on to see what's happening when the reel tries to reset. You may need to start a 3 player game first, and shut the game off in the middle of it, to put the machine into a state where it will try to reset 3 and 4. If it's flipping back to 0 and continuing past it, then you have a problem with the switch contacts that should be indicating when the reel is at 0. Most likely this switch's contacts need to be adjusted. You may find that by adjusting them so they contact properly, this causes the reel to hang between 9 and 0... which would be a likely indication that someone tried to get out of cleaning the reel by reducing the switch pressure (too much).

If, on the other hand, the reel advanced OK manually (pressing and letting release the solenoid), but hangs between steps when being advanced by the machine itself, that might mean that the solenoid's stroke contacts need to be adjusted to assure a more complete stroke on advance.

Just my thoughts based on a Gottlieb machine. Not sure how much of this applies in your case.
