Silent Hill

It never would have happened if it weren't for guys like you, wild, George, rav, etc that kindly posted so many great examples and tutorials for BAM features!

Yah, I always said if I did my own original table this would be it. Glad I waited when I did, as essential BAM features perfectly appeared at the right time.

The only limit I have is table size. I'm already at 200MB, so I can't go too much more. If I didn't have this limit I'd have much higher resolution textures, bump mapping for MUCH more... and even more animated texture effects.

That said, this turned out much better than I imagined how it could look years ago (thanks to original models and assets from the games). I always knew what I wanted to do.... so its cool being able to actually do it.
is there a limit within future pinball exe. itself? just curious as limits have a way of going bye bye

It's a 32 bit application, so it simply can only address about 3.5 GB max. So when textures are added, they are converted to a non compressed format that takes up more ram, etc. So while a table file may seem small at around 200 to 300 MB, all the textures used can use up a lot more ram once the table is loaded and starts.

That said, I completely forgot about using the "use texture compression" option in Video settings which reduced the table using 6GB VRAM total to 3GB VRAM total while playing.

Yes, you can patch the FP exe to address more ram, but that's still not the same as a proper 64bit app, and the patch may cause problems for some hardware combinations, or other apps that may need to work with it.

so in your table, which seems like multiple tables can you purge anything in memory if you dont need it anymore? maybe a script command or one that can be added to bam? Just a thought.

p.s Glad by asking it made you remember compression hope it helps.

No. The entire table loads all at once, and you can't purge anything after that.

I have plenty of VRAM as I have 8GB in my GTX 1080. So for others who have less, enabling texture compression may help them out.

About the only thing you can do is use textures that are power of 2, like having all sides measuring 512, 1024, 2048, etc. I doesn't seem to help much on the memory usage but it does reduce table loading time. I wrote a guide on how to use it:

https://pinballnirvana.com/forums/threads/how-to-make-power-of-2-work-for-any-texture-image-on-future-pinball.20177/ (Tutorial - How to Make "Power of 2" Work for Any Texture (Image) on Future Pinball)

So what table available now do you guys think uses the most memory once loaded and it starts? Im curious because I run every table so far in a cab using a i5 dual core 4gb ram and a onboard intel 4600 than can only use 2gb of the onboard ram and they run without shutter and are smooth.(took me a while to get the settings right).
I do know if I change settings it usually has preload gfx again.

My main system is outdated amd Fx8350 16bg, and gtx 1070 8gb... looks much better of course.

I would say RetroFlair 2 and Silent Hill.... but of course, neither of those are completed yet :)

SLAMT1LT's tables, and maybe MOTU use a lot.

I would agree that MOTU (Masters of the Universe) uses a lot of memory.

Back in the day, I think, x86 applications have 2GB of memory out of 4GB (the other 2GB are reserved for the system or vmemory). On x64 these two other GB can now be accessed by 32bit applications. In order to achieve this, a flag has to be set in the file’s internal format. Unless this 32bit rule changed. Anyways you can access all 4gb now with this Patched exe (not the hacked exe going around) all you do is set the flag in the exe.
I dont think it will work on 32bit windows, only a on a 64bit , and all 4 gb should be useable. Enjoy

This is no different than what the hacked versions are doing. The problem with doing that we found, is it causes problems with other apps that need to work with FP, and it also doesn't work for everyone's PC.

The only mod done to this exe is a flag was set. the hacked version is different. This should work on any pc. not sure how bam.
Im going to test it with the latest twilight zone, i couldnt run it with the hacked exe. TZ 1.03mod was the only table so far I couldnt run with the hacked exe, tis version runs it fine.
anyways, figured someone already did this.

Yes, I've done this myself before (the apps to do so are easy to find), and the result is the same as what I mention above.

Silent Hill (PinEvent)

The Grand Hotel - first pics.

I've been sick the last 2 weeks, so I haven't got much done, but I do have the first part of the Grand Hotel done.

Let's hope I get this thing done before XMAS now :p

So we have a probable ETA now? just saying, not so innocently ;)

The amount of detail is insane.

Grand Hotel work in progress update 2.

Now I have the first two parts of the Grand Hotel done. Changed up the inserts and decals, and now have "The First Burning" painting that leads to Room 111.

Much more to do.

phenomenal !!
I cant wait to play this table, ill probably suck at playing it though like retroflair... the ramps remind me of that table.

How can you say still "much more to do"?! you already had the work enough to complete 10 tables :D

Still have one or two more parts for the Hotel... then the Hospital will be big... then the Church for the finale (will be the smallest probably). Then PinEvent (which will be big for this table) after that.

phenomenal !!

RetroFlair was the starting point... but everything was changed one way or another. The ramps should be mostly easier and were moved back a bit for more clearance room... though FP's bad ramp geometry is making some of them a bit of a pain. Wireramps are great though.

retroflair is a bitch when the space invaders come out its to jam packed, its like trying to play breakout

Yah, I hope to change them up a bit for RF2... we'll see how that turns out.

I used to do pal to ntsc bootblock mods for the pal games for eaglesoft and the other groups.

Yup, I had Vic-20, C64, Amiga 500, Amiga 2000, Amiga 1200, Amiga CDTV

Still have the Amiga CDTV

The Grand Hotel - update 3

Room 111 - The Sacrificial Chamber

Still feeling crappy, but managed to get some more work done. This is the 3rd part of the Grand Hotel, and what you find when you enter Room 111. The seal hanging above the coal fire pit rotates non-stop to remind you that "something terrible happened here".

Much more to do...

FLEEP'ing awesome mechanical sounds update!

Thanks to the generosity of the amazingly dedicated Fleep... Silent Hill will be getting a very nice mechanical sounds and SSF boost! I asked Fleep if I could use his sounds, and he was more than happy to oblige!

Not only are those sounds so crystal clear and amazing quality.... but there are MANY to use so you don't get the same exact sound each time.

It sounds so good I disabled some other "effects" just so I can hear the fleep sounds more.
🙂
