Hello,
i try to repair a space shuttle.
when testing the power board, i have +39 volt instead of +28 (on the plug under the 3 fuses)

i allready change all caps on the board, except C10 (18000uf 25v), didn't have one, but we'll change asap

Is the +39Volt normal ? Is it a C10 issue ? or bridge rectifier ? (not sure of the english name - the square of iron on the power board)

Thank you for your help and sorry for my english
(but also many pinball lover in france)

EDIT : I test output to display, and find -13 volt instead of -100v
with cpu connected i get and error code 5 after pressing test switch

Any idea ? (i'll replace C10 tomorrow)

Anthony

The online manual mentions 28VDC +B for solenoids, un-regulated- rectified/filtered off 25.5VAC winding. I am not sure where you are reading that 39V ? C10 looks to filter 12v that also goes to 5V logic regulator. The high voltage +100 VDC and -100VAC is developed by dual sided regulated voltage doubler circuit off 90VAC winding. also looks like you have +12&-12V un-regulated CPU power. +18 volts filtered by C6 un-regulated for lamp drivers. There is an unusual -13VDC tap off negative side of bridge rectifier . not sure where this goes? And finally the usual 6.3VAC for general illumination lamps.

P>S>That -13VDC may not be used in this machine, like I don't see fuse F7 on supply board. It also mentions no F4 on this machine.

display

i try to mesure with wire connected (mother board, display, etc..)

i find 28 v to solenoid (instead of 39v)

but when i look at outpout to display, i have -3volt instead of -100v
i read that both are necessary for display (+100 and -100v )

i change Q1, 2, and 4 (SDS201, MPSD52 and MPSD02)

i replace D3 and D4 (with 1n4007, no 4004)

Before connecting the display connector on power board, i had -75v and +100v (instead of -100 and +100)
After connecting, i have -3 volt or 0 and still +100v
I disconnect : still -3volt : i guess SDS201 or one MPS is dead now

I check electrical resistance between 0 (ground) and +100 volt :
On the power supply : Zero
One the connector who goes to the display : Zero

I check electrical resistance between 0 (ground) and -100 volt :
On the power supply : i found some ohms (probaly one of dead transistor)
On the connector who goes to the display : I found some ohms, not a real short circuit but still

Is that normal (i have some ohms between ground and -100v) ?

if follow the connector to display :
if i unplugg all connector from display board (except power supply) : didn't have the "short circuit"
I do have short circuit when i plug the connector who goes from display board to IJ3 (on main board)..

It looks like a main board issue .. (?)

:headscratch:

Any idea

thanks for your help (and again, sorry for my poor english)

That 28 volt reading for solenoid +B is correct. Looks like your +100 volts is good. But the negative half of -100 v display high voltage is bad. Yes the gas discharge displays need the 200 VDC potential to light. What voltage do you read across C3 in -100V circuit ?

thank you for your help !

I do have -100volt and +100volt now (R4 what down)

Now, the display almost work (like you see in the attached pic)

it's not a display issue, (i mean lcd ) maybe the board : I switch to display connector and the 2 display "works" better (more digits on)
i'm sure one is dead, but some digit missing or blinking on three other's (and coma for all)

(For info, :
the 2 eprom were missing, i had to program two new one, but it seems ok -
When i press the test switch on the cpu, all the lights are blinking in a special order, and the letter space shuttle are blinking in the middle of the field)
I guess it's the light test, but didn't know how to switch to next test (coils, ..) with cpu, or end test(if possible) ?

I'm now in bookeeping mode, i'll made some test tomorrow through the door switch and let you now

Thank's again.

Good luck since the entire manual is on line @ IPdb. All those adjustments and tests are in pages 8 thru 13 ...

http://mirror2.ipdb.org/files/2260/Williams_1984_Space_Shuttle_Instruction_Manual_dated_Nov_3_1984_with_schematics.pdf

I noticed these updates to several parts of the "Space Shuttle" manual .

CPU BOARD. Your level-9, CPU BOARD must be equipped with the ROMS
specified in the RUM summary. Only jumpers W2, W5 through W7, W9, and
W12 should be connected. Substituted Wi for W2 when a 6802
microprocessor is used instead of a 6808 microprocessor.

Switch Test: Paragraph 1. 1J9 (Rows) should be 1310 (Rows).
Paragraph 4. Change 1P9 to 1P10 and 139 to lJlO.

3. Transformer 7T2 should be 5610-10355-00.
4. Fuse P6 ,20A (at 339) is changed to jumper.
5. General illumination fuses at 3P8 are 5k SB.

Solenoid issue

Thank you for the manual update !

I can perform tests and i have those issue :

- one digit of display number 2 blink on some numbers , but not all...
- 4 digit of a display didn't work (i try to switch connection of display board, same issue)
- solenoid 9 to 16 didn't work during the test, but they works when i activate them via switch (ex : bumpers)

the right flip didn't works

it's add credit on the display when i add coins, but when i press the start/ add player button, some coils works one, but the game didn't start..

All coils works for a second when i switch power to on.
I read that is a blank signal issue .. (?) : i control pin 7 of the NE555, and i have 3.5 volt direct on startup (instead a a second at 0 volt, and then 5 volt)

i'll replace the NE555 this evening and let you know if it fixe something

thank you

game didn't start

i replace NE555 and coils dont activate anymore on power on (one coil was almost burning, i replace transitor and it's ok know - he still active once in power up.. (?), but not warm anymore)
i can add credit via the door switch, but when i press start game, all coils activate once, and nothing happen...

Any Idea ? .. i'm really lost

thank you

working again

It was a switch issue
The ball was not detected, i fix it and everything is ok know
thank you for your help
