Spambot private messages.

Of late we seem to be the target of spambots, I'm banning 2 or 3 a day on average.

At least one of these bots I know of has been sending spam PMs to some of our members.

If you have received any suspicious PMs, please report them via PM to me and whatever you do don't click on any of the links within.

so what exactly are spambots? are they people who log into sites and steal id's? I keep on hearing of them but don't know really what they are or what they can do? are they dangerous in any way or just a pain in the ass?

I just deleted about 20 bots from my site today. Most havn't yet posted anything, which is good, but they all had different names and were from the same ip address, which made them easy to spot and delete.

Got to watch them. They are getting better a pretending that they are real people. :)

It's a computer program that surfs the internet, finds forums, creates an account and then will sooner or later link back to another site to sell stuff or even worse link back to a malicious site which will try to hijack or infect your computer.

oh ok that IS bad! good thing i never just randomly click on anything anymore. since my last computer fried due to viruses (had the geek squad go over it at best buy) they said it was swamped with viruses which is what corrupted both hard drives and I thought my motherboard fried. they said the viruses wiped out windows completely and was trying to write it's own stuff into it when the motherboard just couldn't take the overload and shut itself down...forever!

Sounds like you had a motherboard BIOS virus.
