Favorite Pinball Machine
Jurassic Park
discovered by accident, this game nevertheless rocks. it's an action / puzzle game in which the basic idea is 'indiana jones exploring dangerous underground caverns'. this includes the mad-dash of trying to steal the golden idol, avoiding the giant rolling ball and dodging the arrow and wall traps. plus many more goals, such as rescuing the damsel, dealing with pesky enemies and seeking out powerful artifacts.

graphically it's inspired by stuff like the ancient 8-bit classics "miner 2049er", "spelunker" and countless others. yet it has a level of complexity and nuance that i've never remotely seen before in a platformer... in fact it's really a rogue-like game disguised as a platformer.

there is one huge, major, whomping flaw about this game, and that is that you can't save your position. you get four health points, replenishable to an extent by damsels in distress, but once those are gone, you die and have to start the whole thing over. as a person who usually plays games in order to be done with them, that bugs me.

nevertheless, the gameplay is so rich and compelling that i can't help coming back for more over and over again. the levels are randomly generated to a large extent, so it's very hard to get bored. this also means that one must always stay sharp, because there is no guardian angel or do-overs in this game.

it's no wonder the console manufacturers are moving to adapt this game...

still free for the PC:

i guess this will be my last post here. spelunky is the best and most brilliant game i've played in years, but if it's not pinball-related then i guess it doesn't matter to anyone. after all, one gets weary over time trying to share cool stuff with others only to have the effort mean nothing. or maybe it just means that i have no taste. :D either way, same old, same old.

wish me luck in convincing jon and steve to deactivate my acct. i have a feeling that it will be a battle. this scene died many years ago, but for some reason i kept hanging around. end of line. best wishes. das ve danya.

and apologies to marty and arne- i just couldn't hang on.

Well, you might be back.
I mean, it's only a habit ... ;) ...even though I am becoming painfully aware of the habit myself.

This shit sure needs a major :special: VP update!!!!!!

Aw, come on, Nic... you're one of the few reasons I log on to this site! Hell, I would have commented on this if I'd seen the thread earlier. Looks like a cool game. I'm gonna have to give it a shot after I finish my current obsession with Plants vs. Zombies.

I use to play Spelunker on the NES years ago. It's hard for me to click on old game links after owning the PS3. Games are now absolutely incredible on a widescreen high def TV.

Nic, please keep your account here.

Cheer up Nic.

Haven't had time to play any games lately, downloaded this one but haven't tried it.

After seeing the video above I'm not sure why but this is the Eagles song that popped into my head:

How about if all of us regulars here started individual threads like a blog or tweeting or whatever that stuff is that I've never done. It could spark a little more off-topic posting and we could learn a little bit about each other and maybe swap some interesting BS.

I'll start one now.... :)

thanks, gang. thanks, friends. as per jon's suggestion, i will settle on "read only." feel free to keep in touch via PM's, FB, email, etc. i'd love to keep in touch if possible, just on a non-VP forum basis. life keeps changing and one needs to keep making choices, yadda, yadda...
