Super Sprint

I tried to play it but I get :Failed to initiate drawing surfaces, check to see if your video card meets the minimum requirements. I have a 1g gt 220. (P4, 3.6). Am I missing something?

I'll see if I can find out. I have not had that reported, or even remember mention of it in any GM game.

All the graphics that are scaled are scaled up. (the native 512 to 1024). It starts out in a window (1024X768 ) switching to full screen does not set your monitor but scales the 1024X768 display to your current resolution (up and down). The next upload here will start full screen, I bet that will fix it.

The next update will have,

Already in,
- AI paths and path speed for all tracks.
- random top speed AI cars. Either can win.
- Player car stats. Average lap speed and fastest lap, plus position bonus.

next,
-scoring
-loading saving, game, high scores.
-AI stats
-Second player

then,
Tweak and finish it up.

I'll upload a full screen default version as soon as I get the WIP in order

I recall playing the crap outta' that coin-op for many months whipping that steering wheel around! I loved Super Sprint and hope it works on my computer! Great work Shockman!

I too played this a lot. I played the old sprint games too. I was lucky to have friends that enjoyed them and was as good (almost:)) at them as I was. Both they and Super/Championship Sprint had excellent control that is impossible to achieve with any other controller. I wish I had A Sprint/Pole Position type controller. My plan is to make this work as well as I can with the MOMO and G-25 type wheels and pedals.

AI stats are done. Now I just have to format and display them.

Updated with full screen default. I hope this helps.

read first post again for changes. It's playable.

if I don't touch my keyboard the blue car (me) keeps on turning to the right. if I hold the key down it overcompensates and turns it in circles. only with little taps can I keep it in a straight line, but other than that looking real cool the sprites are just like I remember them! with jammer cars too! very cool!!

Thanks for the feedback. That is the joystick routine doing that. besides the left and right keys it is the only thing that could turn the car. I'm sure I can fix that by having the joystick control turned off, and only come on with a switch. And adding a dead zone which it obviously needs for some people's joysticks. Even when there is no joystick, it seems with GM that this can happen because of other devices, but it only happens if the joystick routines are active.

I'll add that switch when I finish the damage model which I am almost done with. The helicopter rescue is in now, but only if you fall off the jump on track two, by steering off, or going two slow.

This next version removes the analog control to ensure compatibility. It also defaults to full screen. The final will have the control, but it will not interfere as it will have to be asked for, and it will have settings. It will default to a Window, because that is a requirement for YoYo games to have the 'instant play' option.

It has the start of the damage model. the car will collect damage if it hits a wall on any track, and it will crash if the health bar (not arcade realistic) reaches zero, or it falls off the jump or misses the landing ramp by going too slow, or turning out. I still need to freeze control while in the air, but you will still be able to miss if the approach is bad.

A helicopter will rescue you if you crash, but it will take some time to get there and repair you.

Wrenches now appear and will add 20 to your health bar. They appear if your health is missing 20 or more. They appear at the same spot regardless of the track for now. The will disappear after a little while, but will reappear at the same spot (for now) after a while.

Thanks guys for the testing and feed back. It helps a great deal.

This update is actually a final.
Some day I will make it a 2 or three player game but I need to get my wheels/pedals back first. At that point I might throw in isometric sprites for the cars.

This is a fully playable one player game. It's a big file because it has unique scores for each track and the quality of these music bytes is quite good. + or - 750 kb. They were ripped from the CD and some of the original songs are 9+ megabytes. Also the resolution is much higher than the arcade monitor, though the display is original, so 4 pixel square 'pixels'. The track graphics are basically a port as is the sounds. The physics, rules, scoring, bonuses, and interface is a remake.

- Alpha transparent dynamic shadows for the cars, and original dithered shadows for the tracks.
- Correct clipping of the walls, signs, bridges, etc.
- Upgrade system (acceleration, top speed, traction, and brakes) with 5 levels each. 4 collected wrenches for each level.
- Oil slicks caused by bumping cars, makes the drones slow and spin, but sends the player out of control for a second and a half.
- Bonus system (wrench bonus, fast lap bonus, and lapping bonus)
- Full stats, fastest lap for a track and fastest track time saved in an .ini file. and displayed in a couple of places (results screen, and 'high score' screen. No points system saved though. It's all about track times.
- Helicopter rescue .
- 3 continues, so you can loose 4 races before game over.
- 3 skill levels,
EASY - Start game with full traction and brakes, and only the race winner gets the wrench bonus. (the player stays superior longest)
NORMAL - No upgrades to start, and the losers get the wrench bonus minus one wrench. (same physics, but the player stays superior longer)
HARD - No upgrades to start and all cars get the wrench bonus. In no time you will be playing games with full upgrades. (Racing quickly becomes seat of the pants, but without accidents the player is always capable of winning).
- The other cars can set, loose, and retake records.
- Half gates on track 8 on hard skill only.
- Broken wall on track 6 fully coded.

There is a lighter version posted on YoYo games site that is 11.8 mb. but it repeats the same music too often.

Press F1 to learn the controls, and get info and tips. The main ones are,

The C key is used to navigate the interface screens

Z - brake
C - accelerator
cursors - steering wheel

P - Pause
1 at title - input player name
2 "" player 2 name (for now just for preference)
F5 - Continue a game. If you exit a non completed game, you can continue it right after the last track completed. The saving is automatic

This as well as my Asteroids + Deluxe is also featured with a link to them at YoYo here http://yoyogames.web.officelive.com/RacingGames.aspx

Don't be put off by the slowness of the cars at the start of the game if you start on a easy track. The action will become very fast as you win races and upgrade your car.
