danger notwithstanding, that's a pretty interesting story. i take it nobody you've told it to was able to figure it out? sleepy might have had some good ideas on this one.
is it possible you got hit by lightning or maybe ball lightning, and your car's shell acted like a faraday cage? that could explain why nothing got fried and why the plastic trash bag helped resist the strike. either way, pretty terrifying.
ah, that reminds me-- one time my mom rather casually told me that she'd been hit by lightning twice in her life. for some odd reason i don't remember following up with questions, but based on my current understanding, i'm guessing that she was in fact in the weaker electrical shock radius that spreads through the ground next to a strike.
she probably wasn't standing on a rock, either, unlike these two unfortunate young guys:
