That Darn Cat...Felix

My beloved eldest cat Felix has to be put down (polite for kill) tomorrow and I'm having a lot of second thoughts, vet suggests it's the right thing to do but he is still loving life most times.

Some of you know about my 3 cats, Felix, Oscar and the youngest one that this site helped to name, Bagatelle. Drives me crazy when anybody tries to call her "Bags" for short!

Is the vet certain the cat is not suffering an ear infection with a lack of appetite, vomiting, dehydration and the inability to walk, often staying in one spot and crying, looking ashen, pale and on its last legs?

If so, try an oral rehydrate solution for cats, available at better pet stores, and mix it one or two tablespoons of the solution to one cup of distilled water and a quarter pouch of a quality wet cat food. I've used Whiskas to revive a Lazarus cat. He didn't so much eat the chunks of food, but did suck up the water broth and was back on his feet in several days.

My dear Mom let one of my female cats out about two months ago while I was away. Lazarus cat found her and now, right at this very moment I am sitting next to a very wet, slightly bloody Queen tending a yelping kitten.
This will be another challenge to deal with.

And you have to bring the soup to the cat, else it might not come to drink it, or be able to walk to it.

Jon, I'm very sorry to hear about Felix. I also know first hand the desire to hold on to him as long as you can. But part of caring for our pets is letting go, so they don't have to suffer needlessly. If you've trusted your vet in the past, I'd trust him/her now. Cats can be so ill that they are not able to really show distress. I sure wish Sarah Lee was still here so I could give her a belly rub.

Our cat looked healthy right up to the day my dad brought him to the vet and we found out his back end was riddled with cancer. so it may be best to trust your vet here as a cat will, I guess due to its pride, but they will not act like they are in pain for the most part good luck with whatever you decide and may I suggest therapy for the other two? as odd as it may sound the other two WILL notice the third ones absence and may get distressed may whatever god you believe in take your cat and keep him on his lap for company and may your cat no longer be in pain...

You have a Lot of Cancer around you faralos.
Are you sure it isn't something in the water or in the ground causing it?
Like out here in the San Fernando Valley. Rocketdyne is notorious for having dumped carcinogenic rocket fuel into the grounds in some places out here and the stuff is ending up in the drinking water.

I lost mine last Thanksgiving. Same deal, I probably held on to her longer than I should have but she was eating, drinking and using the box (despite a huge tumor on her, feline mamary cancer). She only waited for me to come home, hid all day untill I was home, and if I went to bed late- man I'd hear about it.
