So, in another post, I was talking about commercial pinball, and the Steam Deck came up as a idea with fp/bam and why I should consider grabbing one (still haven't made up my mind completely)

So, after watching a bunch of videos, and reading some posts, I came across some interesting uses for the steam deck, and how it would relate to me. But first off, I will tell you why I am now looking at a Steam Deck. First and foremost, my "outside" computer is no longer working, so if I want to take my computer out, I have to take my 5 pound (plus power) out with me. Since my GF has a major shopping addiction, I usually spend a couple hours in a coffee shop waiting for her, and sometimes, it just isn't that easy with a massive gaming computer that only runs 2-3 hours on battery. Furthmore, to be able to replace that laptop properly requires a small scale gaming computer with a dedicated graphics card, and that is 1000 to start up here, so budget wise, it didn't make much sense.

In other words, even though it's a laptop, it's just in name only, and having to carry it in a backpack can be tough on the shoulders after a while. So I wanted a more portable option. The last little while, I have been getting into my steam games, so I would like to play those more as I am really into builder type games like Cities skylines, and sim games like No Man's Sky and timberborn. I'm also a retro gamer, and in another thread, there is a talk on emulation and mame, so I got that bug back as well, so needed a decent replacement computer that can handle Steam and emulation.

And... maybe some pinball...

Can the steam deck run fp WITH bam? Yes and No. The Steam OS has problems with BAM, but one of the nice things with the steam deck is you can install Windows, so once you have a dual boot system, FP/BAM is possible, and with the specs on the Steam Deck, everything but the highest tables should play fine. Okay, that problem is solved, I can run my pinball games on it.

So, I want my cake and to eat it too. Play pinball, my steam games, run my emulators, and use general windows functions like internet browsing, downloading, and listen to my music and watch videos, and I want it at half the price while being easier to lug around. I also want to take it with me and spread the word on FP and show people how good it is, as well as a simple hook up to external displays. A simple go everywhere little unit with enough horsepower to do what I want without having to morgage my place.

Hense, the Steam Deck. Even the basic version is quite a bit cheaper than a laptop of the same specs, but if you want a good idea, here's the link: https://www.steamdeck.com/en/tech

In other words, more than good enough for 98% of all the fp and vpx games out there. It can play AAA game titles (with some adjustments) and adding a program called emudeck will give me the ability to run emulation for over 150 emulaters. (even some switch games work) The power in the Stream Deck is about the same as the last gen consoles like PS4 and compatability is getting better as updates come out.

There are some downsides, battery life for one, so you will still be tied to a wall outlet with triple A games, but you can get a simple hub with htmi ports so maybe you can use this as a low cost alternative to a dedicated computer for a pinball cabinet. It is a pretty big unit though, but people just love this thing, so nat. my ears perked up and my brain went into overdrive about this. So if I pull the trigger, expect more posts on my adventures with this, and just how good is the Steam Deck for vpx/fp.

Hmm, I wonder how cabinet mode would look in this, even with no scoring display...

You summed it up pretty good.

While the biggest complaint would be battery life, remember this is a real "PC" (like your laptop)... not a mobile device. You can completely customize what it uses on a hardware level for "each" game in realtime (separate from the in-game settings(... and its amazing how much power you can save if you really want to. You can always get a nice 45W+ battery bank that can output Type C with a full 45W charge (what the Steam Deck needs for full power, and what it's power adapter uses). I got a 30,000maH battery bank that outputs more than 45W from its type C port and can keep the deck fully powered while charging. Works great, and can be used for any other devices as well. This combined with the normal power adapter for the SD means you can keep using it for a long while on the go.

You can also use type c adapters / hubs if you want for added multiple displays / portable monitors and other devices. I have the Valve Dock which has HDMI and Display port and Ethernet, and 3 USB ports. This allows me to use the SD with my 4K TV (4K at 60Hz) and a second screen and the SD screen (so 3 screens) at any time, and combined with my bluetooth mouse and keyboard and also WiiU gamepad (its bluetooth)... and the dock keeps it charged. Really handy, and makes it easier to do whatever you want on a bigger screen for installing / managing stuff easier or doing "computer" type stuff, or even for playing games, watching movies, youtube, netflix on a big screen.

The controls on this thing are fantastic. The customization built into Steam is fantastic and easy to use. Very handy for some "PC" games that were not designed for this kind of device.

I haven't yet tried using Windows in it yet, but I have been loving it so far just with Steam OS / Game mode / Desktop mode.

You can use EmuDeck to easily setup your various emulators for the most part... and you can also install an all in one for MAME and other stuff with something like CoinOps Legends 3 for Steam Deck.

Everyone I know who has one has loved it so far. I'll be bringing it with me when visiting family. Thats a long drive there and back... and its handy for chilling when away from home.

I love this thing.

I also use magnetic type C adapters. Highly recommended as it removes any wear and tear on the type C port, and makes it so easy to just connect and remove easily. The ones I got work great and support full charging and full data throughput for the Vale Dock, etc. Best thing I got for it.

These are the magnetic adapters I use, but I'm sure there are others that are just as good if not better.

Type C cables I use (that support full data and full charging)

...and the portable battery bank that outputs enough power from the type C port that will keep the SD fully powered while charging it (SD needs at least 45 W).

When it comes to charging and data cable / adapters... they are NOT all the same, so its important to get ones that will support a full charge of 45W+ and full data throughput.

Excellant. I have quite a collection of stuff I can plug into, a proper hub with 2 hdmi ports, controllers including the AtGames legends pro, tons of cables and bits. As it is black friday, a micro sd card 256gb is under 40 here, and (as a note to others) is U3 and A2 for the speeds. Of course I am going to put windows in mine, see how some of the software I have runs, like photoshop or dreamweaver (suspect the older versions)

Down the road may carry a external display. A new one just came out, XPanel. 14 inch, can transfere 35w of power back to the Steam Deck, and has a second usb c port for a battery bank. Someone mentioned that you can actually use some types of inverters, stuff that is used for battery charging power tools and lawnmowers, if it has a usb c output. He uses a Milwaukee M18 Top-Off and 2 batteries, it feeds 100w and works really great, though that is quite something to lug around.

Lots of neat stuff out there, and you can also use them for other items like phones.

The things I am going to get to start:

A USB C 90 Degree Adapter, as the usb port for the steam deck is at the top, and the cables sticks up
More memory, I may replace the built in ssd down the road, but a couple sd cards
A usb c memory stick
a wrap or Protective skin (the steam deck comes with a case)
Battery base. I'm looking at a Baseus Power Bank Fast Charging 20000mAh 65W

Since I am a audio nut, upgrade the sound a bit, maybe a sonos or cheap wireless bluetooth, or maybe run it in my stereo system. I wonder how the steam deck would sound run through 500w speakers and a 2500 dollar amp? :D
It has a headphone jack, so computer speakers should work as well.

Coin-ops will work, but everyone said emudeck works the best, but I am sure others will as well. I have retrobat as well, looks real good and has support for vpx and fp, but would have to run it in windows mode. emudeck is pretty simple, and you can update it or add to it right through steam deck.

Amazing how technology has grown by leaps and bounds.

A good video to start with.

Yah, the Steam Deck has improved a lot with each update.

Myself, I use EmuDeck for most retro stuff except for MAME. For that I use CoinOps Legends 3 for SD since it has everything all in one install (media, roms, controls, etc)... automatically setup for all games.

here's the coolest add-on. Man, I want one....
Nreal Air Head Mounted Display. Under 400 us. Have to order it from overseas. though..

Yah, I have been sooooo tempted to get one. There are a couple of different companies making them now.

And... I pulled the trigger and got the 256 gb version.

See how long it takes, they say 2 weeks, but after paying, they added a little note that said they had distributor problems.
I will try and wait patiently...

Yah, they had that note for both my Deck and and the dock each time. In both cases it took more than 2 weeks I think.

Given the time of year, it may take a bit longer than normal. At least you don't have to wait as long as I did...as I was an early adopter who ordered in Feb and didnt get my SD until Oct (but that was early on before they had a good supply chain going).

Well, since they have a proper supply, maybe it will be 2 weeks... or not.
BTW, what sd card do you use? I just ordered a samsung evo plus 512, which is suppose to be the fastest according to a couple videos that tested these things.. Got it at black friday decent price, but online. You would think the stores would have these in stock...

I got a 1 TB A2 U3 when it was on sale way back... but still not cheap either way.

Speeds are good. No worse than mechanical drives for an SD card.

For transferring to that SD card... SteamOS normally uses EXT4, and Windows doesn't natively support that, etc. I found the easiest way to copy data to the Steam Deck without needing to remove the SD card is to use an app like Warpinator, and the equivalent app on Windows (Winpinator), and copy over WifFi. Surprisingly easy and fast. I just tell it what folders I want to copy to the SD, and it transfers them to your transfer folder on your Deck's sd card. Great to copy Non Steam games over (I do the install on my PC first).

...and I now just ordered a spare 512 GB sd card to play around with (samsung as well) for Windows usage, and also a type c to sata enclosure since I have a few smaller SSDs lying around anyway. So I can try both out (as Windows bootable drives) and see how well they work for speed, and be able to mess around with FP-BAM (and any Windows apps / games not yet running on SteamOS) on the go without needing to change my current SD card's content or the internal 512MB m.2.

Thanks terry, will look at that video. Going to be a interesting experience, hopefully fp/bam on steam deck as well.

If you don't have a hub / dock yet.... I would consider one, as it makes the functionality much better, and doing things in desktop mode on the smaller screen can be a pain...especially for those of us getting older. :) It's nice using your TV as a PC.

The Valve dock is more expensive (but also has HDMI and Display port outputs, most only have hdmi), but it does come with another 45W type c charger, so that's nice to have as a dedicated power adapter for the dock, and you can use the power adapter with the deck for on the go charging.

I have both the valve dock and the JSAUX one (with newest firmware), and the valve dock seems to work nicer with my 4K TV (and it also auto updates directly from valve, and will get better support). You want a dock that will provide enough power for all devices that will plug into it, as a hub may not provide enough power for that. It's also nice to have wired ethernet if you can make use of that when wifi is not available.

Thanks Terry. I do have a ankar hub, with html and sd card slot. I will get a dock sometime, as I also have a 4k TV, but in the meanwhile, use what I have already. :)

My eye's are not young either, but then, a set of AR glasses might fix that problem....

Been looking at videos, some interesting stuff there. I guess I should post some here sometimes, since there are some pinball related ones out. Looking so forward to getting it now. There's a new 3.4 OS, and Proton has a new build coming out as well that increases compatability. So, I will just play around with it and then add windows later. Getting my emulation "files" ready right now. :)

And Lastly... I love Black Fridays...

Picked up a M.2 Docking Station for Steam Deck HB0604 JSaux, with 1 terrabyte ssd and now includes a 65 w charger. 30 dollars off (US which you know is a bit more Canadian) plus a gift card so good deal. Hopefully should do me for a while.

Great place to put videosa for me I guess. This uses the same hardware I just got, pretty honest review, but does show the surprising capabilities.

One thing he's incorrect about... when connected to a monitor / tv, you can have games change resolution in Game Mode (up to 4K) without going into desktop mode. There are options in Steam to allow automatic resolution change, or set it manually and per game (within Steam itself, not the game's settings which also need to be changed). I've played plenty of less demanding games in 4K from Game Mode and switched back and forth. You just need to understand how PC Games work.

I have Blender, GIMP, etc running on SteamOS, and it runs great from that. Lots of apps are available in Linux. It still won't compare to using Windows instead for desktop related stuff, but its still amazing what this thing can do. I love being able to connect this thing to any TV / monitor easily.

Yeah, I just wanted something that was portable and had more horsepower than the computer I am replacing. This will do. :)
Time will tell if photoshop will work on it, maybe a older version would be better.
There's that arcade I went to, but the owner has a store front that also sells or has interests the same as mine. Pinball, console game carts, comics and records. Like Candyland for me. He's big into retro gaming so next time I am there I will show him the steam deck if he hasn't already got one.

Well, according to Fed Ex, I get the unit on the 29th!
My sd card I ordered yesterday came in today, through Canada Post of all things.

Damn, that was fast. Better get my ass in gear and get ready. Lots of roms to go through and sort for emudeck.

I would also highly recommend Coinops Legends 3 for Steam Deck as a starter. It's an all in one package that is ready to go. You just install, and play. The front-end, media, games, controls for the SD are already set. For MAME, its a nice collection, but it also has some other systems thrown in there, and its not huge either. I use EmuDeck for most other things though.... and you'll spend a lot more time getting everything working with EmuDeck afterward.

I got my Type C SSD enclosure, so now I can use any of my spare SSDs lying around to play around with Windows on the Deck. Nice thing about that is it can be used directly in the typce C port on the deck, or I can connect it to the Dock and use with a mouse / keyboard and my other larger portable external USB drives for ease of usage on my TV.

Also, if you want to find art (for Steam / Game Mode Interface) for any Non-Steam games you install, this site is the best resource. If you can get SGDBoop working from that site (read the SGDBoop tab / help on the top), it can make adding all the various art MUCH easier.

Forgot about coin-ops. I have a couple versions already.

At the moment though, going through and resorting my roms, and removing those I wouldn't play. Then it's time to get up to date with vpx (oh, that is going to be fun) and sort out my favorite fp games as well. I have loads of storage now, but would like to reserve some for other things.

Next step is to finally fix my power and get a proper charger. Found a nice one, 130 w, all the specs needed as I have a samsung phone, should handle the anker hub and another smaller hub/phone recharger, but still would like more power.

Need a case too... sigh... the tomtec one is sold out up here and they don't ship to canada either. Guess they don't want my money. Looking at the daydayup one, as I need to carry a few things at once.

There's coinops legends 4 that just came out. You try that? I got the max version with console added so be giving that one a tryu first. Thank god for high speed internet...

No I haven't. I don't think there is a Linux / Steam Deck build for Legends 4 yet. It's only for Windows at the moment I think.
