I almost made that same mistake once. I was driving up the coast and,
weary for sleep, I pulled off the Pacific Coast Highway and onto the sands
of a dark, deserted beach while driving a rear-wheel drive car.
I soon realized that I could not move off the sands. The front wheels were buried and I tried backing out of it, then with a piece of scrap board wedged under the rear drive wheel and finally with no luck and, as I was already weary, I covered the windows with large black plastic trash bags that I had brought for the occasion, and went to sleep instead.
The sleep was not disrupted by the usual lights of the city, and the plastic bags removed the remnant light of a moonless night. I took some time
to appreciate the waves and the sounds of the breakers before turning in.
The usual physical cacophony of scavenger birds that one sees inhabiting the normal public beaches was totally absent in this secluded area below the highway and behind the dunes,
likely due to the lack of public presence and the resulting garbage that would attract the scavengers.
I was awakened in the morning by a friendly beach ranger with a tow truck and wench and he was nice enough to pull the car back to terra-firma at no charge.
But for damn sure, I was never going to attempt to drive to Hawaii from the coast.
