You know, with all the baggage that everyone probably brings with them when they hit the half-century mark (My back hurts all the time! I sure have to pee a lot!), I completely missed the fact that it’s also my 10th anniversary here! If I recall correctly, I joined during that brief and shining moment that this site actually was nirvana, while Pacdude was moderator. I think he actually tried banning someone during his first week on the job. Can’t remember who. Phoenixxx probably.
Anyways, if there’s one thing I’ve learned putting my feet up here for the last decade is that you’re all a huge bunch of weirdos, probably the best ones in all of the internet. I think we have made “moderator Pacdude” proud. Mostly because Phoenixxx isn’t here, either. So we've really limited the number of arguments about what color “white” that the white lights are.

Damn, Bill. That was my second favorite S&G song after "The Sounds of Silence".
I actually bought the HSoW single new for .78 cents, out of my elementary school lunch money.

And Aw Shoot. I once copped to being ripped by Toto from my home, and a certain moderator while back at the vp.com publicly dissed me as "a crazed schizo". Well sure. But is that a good enough reason to rip somebody off like that?

I mean, "Hold the Line" and "Africa". So I quit playing that sound, about the time that they then submerged into the deep blue sea. And I Really Regret a bunch of white men cashing it in without supporting those who are suffering drought and political oppression in that country.

Toto ought to be ashamed of themselves for pigging out on those depressing realities.

Thanks, arne! That song is even worse than I remember it being! And I remember it sucking pretty hard. I'd much rather see girls in their underwear performing "Love Theme From Less Than Zero".

And the worst part of it is, they want me 'to join their little club' before I get a penny of it myself. Else, no retainer. No doctor. No dentist. Pot Luck. It's only been 33 fucking years. I mean, who's wagging the dog?

They wrote the lyrics. I created the tune and suggested the theme.

Ah, The Bangles' version! Ah, Bach! And Happy Birthday! Watch out for your kidneys!

It's like what my Brother did once. He borrowed 50 cents, and when he had the money to pay back, he instead bought a Sidewalk Sundae bar, a vanillin ice cream bar with a bitter fudge center. I hated those. I was 6 years old.

So he buys this bar, hands it to me, and says, "Here's your 50 cents". Like what Neil Young sings. "You pay for this, and they give you that".

bill, if you ever manage to get mr. spock's ass down here to liverpool...

but no.... !

That video! Is Mr. Spock annoyed? Or is he coveting the life?

A little more Africa, courtesy of Lord Roderick Blaine and Lady Sandra Bright Fowler and yours truly, who wonders what the world would be if the American Woman guitar solo were played on clarinet---by Benny Goodman.

Thank you, nic, for being the only person who didn't post an "Africa" video! Although, I must say, Greg, that is an impressive performance! Very nice job on the "rain".

Yep.....they have done several other songs including Rosanna. Not quite as impressive, though, as it's hard to make "doot-doo-doo" and "bomp-bomp-bah" sound like a Steinway.....

I wonder how many of those Slovenians understand what they're singing.....

Like a Rolling Stone with no particular place to go?

Ah ha!

I just hope they don't think we really like that song. That would really give our Western Culture a bad name. Now Steve knows how to post a video! Except his selection seemed too... cheery.

Oh yes you asked for this...the times we could have had...

Well, after that sensuous strumming by Sir Charles, here's a tidbit from North of the tracks (Finland 1992) with a Canadian ambiance.....

Did Chuck Berry invent his root-five, root-six rhythm structure, or did he get it from a Tommy Dorsey cut from 1939(!)?. I heard it back in the Eighties on the way home from work in the wee hours on an obscure FM station run out of Pasadena City College... appropriately called KPCC. Basically what we call three-chord blues with the saxophone section doing the r5-r6 riff, but over conventional rolling boogie-woogie piano, and the remaining horns having their fun. Trouble is, two efforts to identify and copy the tune have been fruitless, as I forgot the title long ago---if in fact I ever knew it.

Anyway, grab some wine and enjoy the kind of stuff that kept me employed and off drugs.....

Hey GS, does that drive you crazy too? There was a Big Band station in the 80's out of West Covina, Ca. KGRB AM. It was on the dial near KHJ 93. Their main sponsor was Canterbery Records (Pasadena), trading in used records and 78's, still in business. They played a Bing Crosby record from 1928, and I swear, it was very close to Pete Townsend's "Face the Face".
I would consider the Crosby tune to be a roots-of-modern rock gem. But I have forgotten the title and cannot find it.

They also played a tune from 1938 that had the basic accompaniment riff from "The James Bond Theme"(1962). And the original 1934 version of "I Only Have Eyes For You", from the motion picture "Dames". But that one I know.

I think the Bing record was as the singer for The Paul Whiteman Orchestra, or one of Bing's associations.

At the risk of losing my Gent, what do you think about these?

"Hello" by Adele vs. "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls. Neither? Either? Both?

"Radio Zion", huh? guess I missed that. I vaguely remember AM 930 going from Top 40 / Pop to Hispanic, at which time I changed the preset---quickly!

As far as the Tommy Dorsey / Chuck Berry thing is concerned, I should be careful what I ask for; I typed 'Tommy Dorsey' in the Search box and the auto-finisher or whatever it is added, 'boogie woogie' and got me this:
https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search...youtube&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-001

And this:
http://www.musicvf.com/Tommy+Dorsey+and+His+Orchestra.art

Trouble is, while it's the only cut with anything 'boogie' in the title. it's not as I remember.....I wonder if acoustics were scrambled by my nailhead 401 rumbling through the Figueroa tunnels?

The riff is unmistakable, but what I remember is the sound of saxes rather than of trombones, and the riff being used in more than a few short sections. Oh well; take me to the bridge and drop me off!

I'm not much of a judge of tunes where the main feature is other than instrumental proficiency or just plain 'bite' (although I did get a kick out of Alanis Morissette's 'You Oughta Know' ("Will she go down on you in a theater?"--classic!)

Gimme that wine! (or, I take my Triox in a box)

Yea, Alanis is a bomb too. Me likes.
The thing about the Adele tune is, it sounds like several recent tunes with the theatrical big sound, the intro, the buildup during the verse lines, and then the hammer comes down with the chorus. Didn't I hear that approach on American Idol. No. Wait. I caught it as a rerun on YouTube.

And the thing of it is, I believe Iris is the better recording. It has 89 Million YouTube views. Not too shabby. But the Adele tune gets 230 Million-something views.

It's not this one? Near the end of the track?

Sorry---which 'it' is on your mind? The riff, or a particular recording. Wish I had the time to play each one about 50 times, but I think all three Youtube examples are the same one.

There is the one I asked about, and this one with TD and Glenn Miller but it is trombones in stereo?!?!! Is this a remastered from mono release? The stereo is good.

Neither. Anyone who survived the '80s is gonna get a nasty "Lionel Richie" flashback listening to that Adele song. Too long, too turgid.
The Goo Goo Dolls started off life in fine fashion as Replacements wanna-be's. Somewhere along the line they made the unfortunate discovery that sap sells and they started pumping it out like they were a Vermont maple tree. For middle-school dances only.

True, but at least Forbes delivers a catchy quote while you wait. Here's what mine said:

"It is not heroes that make history, but history that makes heroes." Joseph Stalin

Kind of surprising. I always figured Steve Forbes for a Trotskyite. Looking at that list, I can now pronounce a victory for us as a civilization. We can now say that the Black Eyed Peas are "so last decade." Good work on ignoring them, everybody! That doesn't forgive those of you who bought their music in the first place. Like nic. So he can work on his karaoke version of "My Humps".
