The latest pop-up arcade in Amsterdam is housed in a number of converted containers in one of the city's parks. Jim Jansen tells us how it came about and how it fits into the capital's pinball scene.

There was an arcade at Venice Beach in the Summer of '80. Housed in a white tent, I'm pretty sure that, at closing time, the machines were then carted off into the nearby cargo truck for the night.

even handier when all you need to do is put the side panel back in place for the night, eh?


pretty cool idea to have a roving pinball arcade housed in a shipping container, assuming you could figure out the right spots to hit. maybe you could just hire a flatbed to move you every few weeks (or months) and stay with the container at each venue.

Yeah, it's not often that reality TV shows have a positive effect on the planet. Maybe someday that will happen in America.

There was "Extreme Makeover" giving away homes and upkeep to the poor, but it didn't do as well as "America's Funniest Home Videos".

And Oprah gave a free car to each of the studio audience once, and
other things to the needy.

Yes, and Dr. Phil gives his contestants free trips to rehab or Disneyland as long as they're willing to share their misery with all his viewers. I find that there's a difference between having a positive effect on the planet and forcing the poor and the victimized to jump through hoops and entertain the slavering masses just so they can get help they can't afford.

The exploitation is a throwback to the days of "Queen for a Day". Just to get that new refrigerator or stove.

I was thinking that "Makeover" needs a variety format to draw the viewers and then simply give or repair the house without the intrusions. Something that draws the viewers and provides the money. But I believe the reason why that show used the family stories was as a device to visit in a manner like "This Old House", as a fixer show for homeowners to plan on. Not entirely that of course, but just the exploration of the homes and their repairs.

I do appreciate the idea of a show helping people, but without the exploitation. There is so much rot on t.v. that does only that, to make the rich richer at the expense of everyone else.
