I have just over 1 TB of Virtual Pinball on a 2 TB portable HD, so plenty of room for more!

yeah, you are using a lot of storage on the HD because of old PB, programs and DEV team stuff on your HD from what i saw on an old thread.
that old stuff will eat up a lot of HD space.
i kicked a lot of old stuff i don't use anymore.

The items that take up the most room are the Pup Packs.
Some of those are 6 to 8 GB's each.
I currently don't have Pup installed, but I still downoad the tables and archive them.

I have a 500 gb SSD with 27 gb of pinball tables. I have 2 hard discs with 4 tb each. They have about 1/2 a tb of pinball stuff.

@xenonph Do you still have all the FP tables you downloaded from PinSimDB?

I certainly do. Every single one.

well, you stored PUP's.
that'll do it.
make sure you copy paste into the storage 3x to make sure you got it all then check to make sure.
i copied 60gigs to a storage and thumb drive.
right click, left click copy/paste in the drive i wanted.
it didn't all copy the first time.

I have backups of backups!

That is one thing you learn quickly in this community.
Back up everything!
That goes for when working on tables too.
You make a change to the table, save a copy.
I do this everytime, as it saves on possible future headaches.

if even with the backups did you look around in the storage drive to make sure everything copied?.

I triple check when i copy items over.
I also unplug, and plug back in just to make sure.

I use Sync Back Free to save backups to an external drive once a week. It works really well. It allows you to zip the backup files but I don't zip them so I can use the external drive when I am away from home.

I save everything to folders that are named like the path I got the files from. For example, I name a folder like this :

C:\Games\Future Pinball\

to a folder named this:

C-Games-Future Pinball

It makes it so I can remember where the files go if I have to do a restoration which I have done a few times. The method works well.

1. nobody answered my Q to what SSD HD did you settle on for this?
2. how old is it?
i have a 1TB Samsung 870 EVO sata 2.5" i bought for later and maybe use it in one of my PCs that failed..
i have had HD failure with the black screen of death with a message in the corner telling me "hard drive failure is eminent".
no kidding,....i can see that..... kind of late to tell me this.
i wish it would have warned me before it failed with the black screen of death and the message on the screen.
3. do the new SSDs have have a way to know if it is going to fail before it gives the black screen of death?

My understanding is a solid state drive in more reliable than a hard disk. I don't think brand name makes much difference unles it is a brand no one has heard of. When I had a hard disk fail a few years ago, I got almost no warning. It is why you make back ups.

yeah, i got away from the old HD spinners a long time ago and went SSD.
i have been told they are not all the same.
got a nice price on the 1TB EVO at BBuy for $65 and the tax.
anybody using a Samsung 870 EVO?
how did it work out for you.

Well... I still have a raid6 on this PC and for this kind of capacity, spinning disks are a must.

SSD for my boot disks are still enough while they still work and 256gb are ok (for me, because they're JUST for boot a a couple things more). SSD's are also cheaper than M.2, still and I don't need the M2 performance, not to mention, you don't get much more than 2 slot which, when pressed for space, might not be enough.

For reference, the torrents for FP and VP posted in this site, amount to 1TB. That's before you extract anything, of course.

But my curated folder of extracted tables for FP and VPX (I only play VPX tables), amount to 23GB and this includes tables and backglass files.
My VPX and FP install folders which are separated from tables folders, amount to 16GB mostly because altsounds, altcolor and roms folders for VPX.
The puppacks install folder that has the puppack stuff, is already at 6gb...

So, yeah, I still prefer the spin disks for storage as it is cheaper and I can wait a few seconds more to load a table :D

In the end, it's how you'll use the space.

thanks for your opinion.
that's very interesting.
you like the spinners for storage.
spinners might cost less, have moving parts and take up precious space inside the PC cabinet..
most everybody i talked to about this said the SSD was better all around.
SSDs should last a long time and don't have moving parts.
i think heat would be the biggest problem for SSD chips and components.
so why would you want to keep using a spinner other than lower cost?

SSDs are cheaper now than they used to be but when you get into the 4 tb range they are still a bit pricey. If you can afford it, go for SSD. SSD has faster response times and last longer.

definitely much cheaper from years ago.
i already made the upgrade on 3 of my PCs with SSDs.
i have Samsung 870 EVO 1TB i bought in post#13 from BB.
all the old spinners HDs are gone.

here are some possible hints if your SSD is failing
The common symptoms of bad blocks are:
  1. A file cannot be read or written to the hard drive.
  2. Your PC/file system needs to be repaired.
  3. Active applications often freeze up and crash.
  4. Frequent errors while moving files.
  5. Generally, running slowly, especially while accessing large files.
  6. Random crashes.

For you samsung users, I have 2 words: Samsung Magician. Stop worrying

Every manufacturer has a tool like this.

Personally, I use HD Sentinel for years. It still won't help in a power surge that fries everything in a second but better than nothing :)

no worries.
i posted that info for some that might be interested in what i found on what to look for.
in case of a possible powersurge storm unplug everything until it passes.
btw, i have a DeskTop PC with a 2014 4th gen i5 3.2ghz and the max 16GB 1600mhz RAM.
will it get me by with a decent card?
