Does FP crash near or during the rendering process? Here are some potential solutions:

Final Fantasy loaded just fine for me in vanilla FP, but when I tried to run it, it crashed near the end of the 'load bar' process, just before the table was graphically depicted.

Later, after playing around with a number of settings, I found that bumping up these two items prevented the crashes on my setup.

Here then is potential solution #1:

FF Settings.jpg
Note: you can also try leaving "Disable GLSL Shaders" unchecked (bottom-center)

Potential solution #2: (thank you, @AnonTet, below!)

Run the table via Vanilla FP or via FPloader (BAM) in Win8 compatibility mode,
and -not- as an administrator.

Potential solution #3:

Other settings changes may also work. See beginning of page #2.

...

I'm also wondering if the crashes are due to either: 1) high-def textures being forced to scale down too far, or 2) a slightly-different JPG format is being used that wasn't known when FP was released. Or... something like that?

Edit2: Improved title and wording to make the issue clearer.

I certainly don't have lack of ram nor vram.
This table crashes on the loading last stage "getting ready to play.." then wait a couple of seconds and crash. Running FPloader as administrator crash but if I run in Win8 compatibility mode, it works!

Reminder: I'm on Win11 using BAM .340... And here I was thinking I could stop running FP in Win8 compatibility mode :(
Interesting, thanks.

It's the strangest thing, but I can't even replicate the crash myself anymore. I set video depth and z-buffer back to my original lowered settings, and the table no longer crashes, even after I'd erased it's fpRAM file. I thought I had a tiny bit of insight in to all this, but I guess not.

Btw, I double-checked the major textures Ghostmachine was using, and they're 24bit.

@LockDown2341,
If you see this message, try the setting in the original post and see if they help you out.

Well I tried it, but not in the way you think. I switched the Aspect ration to 4:3 and turned on the S3TC Texture Compression option. Everything else in that screenshot was indentical. And it works now. Fancy that eh? Plays pretty well so far but I need to play it a little more.

Well, I'm on Widescreen and I do *not* have S3TC enabled. Precisely the opposite options of what you have and still works, here.

Okay, small update since this has become a large discussion.

So I stopped playing, went ahead and downloaded/played a few other tables, then came back to this one. It wasn't working again. I tried all the resolution settings presented in the thread so far, and no dice. So I went ahead and tried the "Run As Admin" and "Win 8" compatibility option and it seems to run now without any worry. I haven't had to do this for any other table I've tried so far, but there ya go. Hope that helps someone figure out the issue.

@LockDown2341,
Ah wow, thanks for the testing and feedback. Great to hear the table's working for you now.

You know, George said something earlier that maybe has some bearing, and that's that the author was a bit of an odd duck. I'm thinking he might have used some non-standard models or textures that possibly cause problems in a sort of 'irregular way,' or based on something else that's happening in the system. unrelated to FP.

Not sure that's actually the case, but next time I run in to a crashy table, I'll be thinking about all this.

Btw, there's a way of being able to keep a custom set of video settings for each table via batch files, but I haven't worked it up yet. It would come in handy for situations like this, though.

Well if need to see if other tables work okay with the Windows 8/Admin setting. If that's the case I'll just keep it like that.

No need to run as Admin. Maybe the 1st time but not after that.
